Fortunately, like you I work in the health care industry and am able to work extra here and there. Work was way down over our Christmas blizzard and I was asked to take off quite a few hours but it actually was a blessing. Being snowed in allowed me to clean, sort, finish quite a few projects, and evaluate others.

I grew up frugal and it is just a way of life for me. Our home is an older home and almost paid for and the cars are also old and paid for.

I really haven’t seen a change in my “lifestyle” because of the economy. I still shop thrift stores, and Goodwill. Just today I bought a 100% wool sweater to unravel and knit hubby some new socks.

We eat “low to the ground” as my dear mother used to say. Lots of beans, rice, and vegetables. Just tonight we had scalloped potatoes with a few bits of ham left over from Christmas, a big salad, and a few leftover spears of asparagus.

I enjoy reading your blog very much. Every now and then I have an “ah ha” moment when I realize you’re doing something frugal that I should adopt! and I promptly do it!

I don’t use coupons either. 99% of the time the coupons are for prepackaged stuff and with the exception of cereal (Cheerios) I don’t buy that stuff for my family. I get tired of people crowing about all the money they save by using coupons, because I just don’t see it happening if you don’t want to feed your family processed food, which I don’t.

I am looking forward to more blog posts about The Grocery Game. 🙂

I received both your blog and The Simple Dollar blog in my email for a few months. A very enjoyable part of my day was sipping on coffee and reading them.

About a week or 10 days ago, I stopped receiving blogs. I clicked the “Subscribe to” link and re-entered my email, only to get a message that I was already a subscriber. Still, though, nothing in my email. (Same scenario with The Simple Dollar.)

Any ideas as to what may be wrong? Have you heard about others having this problem? I really miss having them delivered.

Kathy

Everyone in Seattle knows Pike Place (free, except that it’s a Market, for goodness sake). For my money [Zero Dollars], the Seattle Central Library is a treasure! It’s downtown, so public transit should be easier and there is something for everyone. It’s not to be missed!

Katy, I just had to comment somewhere that on a recent trip to Denver I got the chance to visit Red Rocks and in one of the historical tributes to the Civilian Conservation Corps members that built the concert hall among the rocks (beautiful, btw) was a reference to a CCC saying, actually from a song they sang I think… “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.” Anyway, made me think of you and now I know why I thought I’d heard your “motto” before. John
