Giveaway Week — Home Dairy With Ashley English

by Katy on March 27, 2011 · 94 comments

Please note that this giveaway has ended. Congratulations to “Kristin B,” whose comment was randomly chosen as winner!

Today is day seven, the very last day of Giveaway Week and I am giving away a copy of Home Dairy With Ashley English: All You Need to Know to Make Cheese, Yogurt, Butter & More.

You probably know that I am very much a make it from scratch kind of womyn gal, but I have yet to make the leap to my own dairy products, (although I have been wanting to try The Frugal Girl’s yogurt recipe.) And if Ashley English’s books on Canning, Keeping Chickens and Keeping Bees are any indication, this book is going to be filled with both information and inspiration.

To enter to win this book, write something in the comments section about why you want to win this book.

I will randomly choose a winner this Tuesday, March 29 at 9:00 P.M., west coast time.

When I saw this, I immediately thought of my mom, who raised us with fresh dairy milk and good organic vegetables from our garden and sometimes the store. I would love to give it to her–she already makes her own yogurt sometimes but to give her other good ideas would be great! It would be used, I promise!

Like many others, I make yogurt, but would love to branch out…

I tried to make butter once many years ago but I thought I was doing it wrong. I would love to know how to make different butters. I would adore knowing how to make my own cheese! That is a favorite thing in my house and it would be great to know exactly what we are eating.

Thanks for offering these giveaways!

We buy our cream and milk from a local, organic dairy farmer, and if I could learn to expand my usage of his dairy products into making other items, I would be thrilled!

I’m lactose intolerant but love dairy, especially yogurt, so I’d like to try to make lactose-free versions.

I actually have this book from the library. My husband and I are known throughout both of our families as “people who eat a lot of cheese.” I would like to take this moment to reassure our loved ones that we have had our cholesterol checked and both of us have excellent numbers so we are perfect candidates for eating even more cheese and other tasty dairy products. We plan on getting goats as soon as our living situation permits it (goats seem like thy would be a little more manageable than cows).

Oh please, please, please!

I recently began a restricted diet and so I can’t eat most store bought yogurt and most aged cheeses. So I’ve really wanted to learn how to make mozarella/ricotta things like that on my own. I’ve tried to make yogurt a few times before and did OK, but I think that it would be better for me than the store bought stuff.

If I don’t win, I’m definitely going to see if I can this book at the library!

As my husband embraces frugality more, it has given me the motivation to look for other ways to live life more simply. I’ve started cooking at home and making things from scratch A LOT more than I ever used to, and what I’ve found is that we enjoy the food more, feel better health wise, and know we are saving money. I would LOVE the chance to delve into the world of making your own dairy products. I used to be afraid to try new things, but after a few failed attempts in the kitchen, I quickly got over that. I won’t learn if I never try! :)

My husband has been extremely ill the last two years, and we have been trying everything possible to help him get well. My husband had never had more than a cold, and the doctors are baffled as much as we are. We were eating a healthy diet and doing all the right things before, but now we are having to become even more selective in our food choices. I have started making/doing everything from scratch. I have never even heard of this book or author before. I now have it on my wish list.

Thank you for a GREAT blog. I am learning so much on my journey for improved health/life.

Something that really helped me was reiki. Get initiated, both of u and practice it as much as possible. Reiki taught me to be grateful most of the time for many, many things.
Also laughter heals: deliberately get/borrow funny movies, joke books, cartoons and ask friends to make u smile.
Meditation too is wonderful.

Cheese, the most magical of foods. This giveaway coincides with my very first glimmering hope of making my own cheese. Just last week I saw a recipe for mozzarella and thought,”I can make my own cheese?!” I gasped, having never had this thought before and realized I needed this book to send me on my way to a new career as an artisan cheesesmith (am I getting ahead of myself?).

I too have tried my hand living a homemade life. Most recently I’ve become obsessed with canning (Thanks to Ashley’s other book!). My pantry is now full of orange marmalade! I have yet to attempt my own cheese and yogurt and am itching to do so. Home Dairy would be a great kick to get me going!

Because we WILL have a cow! And not in the Bart Simpson way, though perhaps having a cow would cause that too… Someday, we will have a family cow and I intend to be prepared when that day comes…
Great giveaway, thanks!
