52 Week 52 Letters Project — Week 23

Although I may seem to have dropped the ball on the 52 Weeks, 52 Letters Challenge, I’m actually doing pretty well. It is somehow the 23rd week of 2011, and I’ve sent out 17 letters so far, (which is 17 more than I had sent at this time last year.) I am not going to beat myself up just because I’m not at the requisite 23, but instead am going to keep plugging along.

This week I finished up a letter to Tammy Strobel of Rowdy Kittens fame, and am just waiting for her street address in order to put it in the mailbox. Like a letter from a Jane Austen novel, my letter was not completed in a single setting. It was started a few weeks ago and then finished up over a number of different days. I actually kind of like this format, as it gave me more to write about and provided an opportunity to showcase a wide variety of my poor handwriting styles. Truly, a plus.

Luckily, lovely handwriting is not a required skill in order to join in the letter writing challenge, otherwise most of us would be barred from participating. Just a willingness to put pen to paper to brighten someone’s mailbox. One letter at a time.

Are you taking part in the letter writing challenge? Has my lack of reminders affected your motivation? Please share your thoughts and ideas in the comments section below.

I always find it encouraging to hear of other people who still enjoy the art of the handwritten letter 🙂 I will write on most anything but I miss the days when I could walk into a corner drugstore or Hallmark store & have an entire section devoted to boxed stationery With Lines! Alas, I must resort to notebook paper decorated by moi sans matching envelopes 🙁 I love the selection of note cards available everywhere but it’s not quite the same. I pretty much make my own for that option too. Good luck on your continuing mission of snail mail:)

I have taken your letter-writing challenge and have been enjoying it. It is not entirely a stretch for me as I have been a life-long letter writer. But over the years my regular snailmail correspondents have dwindled considerably. There have been a few weeks I’ve missed but many weeks I manage more than one letter (or card or package or postcard — I count anything that I send in the mail to an individual) so I think it’s pretty much balanced out. What I have most enjoyed about the challenge is that I start a week thinking, who will I write to this week? I pick a regular correspondent to whom I owe a response (which has made me a much more prompt responder) or a friend who has a birthday coming up or a friend I have been thinking about and haven’t connected with in awhile. Even though most of my letter recipients don’t respond by snailmail and I don’t in fact necessarily expect a response, I have been enjoying the letters, emails, and general feeling of connection that the weekly letters have brought me. Many are thrilled to receive an old-fashioned missive through the mail. Thank you for leading the charge. I enjoy your occasional updates but don’ feel the need for weekly enumerations or reminders.
