A Love Letter to Pyrex

Pyrex Love

Hello there, small, clear and handsome.

I’ve been thinking about you.

I can no longer hold back the strength of my emotions, and I must declare to all the world:

I love you, Pyrex!

Our relationship started out innocently enough with a medium sized measuring cup. Seemingly nothing all that special, yet how could I have known how I would grow to love the simplicity of your design, the beauty of your form, the strength within your fragility.

Along came a set of three mixing bowl with snap-on lids. (I shiver with the memory.) The bowls so bright yet still see-through. You declared your contents to me with an honesty that prior storage had shied away from. And when two of the bowls broke, the lids fit perfectly on my vintage Pyrex bowls, for your classic form never goes out of style.

Long before the dangers of microwaving in plastic became known, you provided me with the safety and security that I craved. I knew you would never harm me, that our love was reciprocal, equal, special.

I look around my kitchen, and there you are. My pie pans, casserole dishes, measuring cups and of course, my mixing bowls. Ahh . . . the memories of young love.

Our love has deepened and evolved through the years. I know I can depend on you.

But we are at a point where where we’ve been together for a long time, and I’m looking to add some variety to our intimate relationship. Fear not, my glassy eyed lover. I’m just keeping an eye out for some Pyrex bread pans. I feel that they will further strengthen and deepen our relationship.

While others may buy bowls, pans and storage that need constant replacing, you and I will stay together for better or worse. The landfills will not be filled with the detritus from our love.

Thank you Pyrex, you have made me a happy woman indeed.

Ah, yes I adore pyrex too, and I have 2 glass bread pans, and 5 pie plates. Also casseroles, and baking dishes, and bowls. I love how crusts get crispy, lasagna too, for that matter. And they have an outlet near here so I can get replacement parts.

Funny you should post this today of all days. Today I made hard candy with a (new to me) recipe from my cousin. (Yum! Cinnamon candy. So far it smells delicious.) I was planning to pour the hot mixture into a pyrex baking dish, coated with cooking spray, to cool in that lovely rounded shape. With the perfectly fitted snap-on lids, what could be a better a choice?

But when the moment came, I had a bit of a panic. 300 degree molten candy in a cool, glass dish? I was suddenly aware of the potential mess of hot candy and broken glass in my kitchen. And so, I quickly sprayed a metal baking pan and used that one instead.

Has anyone tried the quick change from cold to hot? I think I may just have to stick with the metal pan for this particular purpose.

I accidentally bought a set of small Pyrex dishes with lids a few years back thinking they were a good casserol size. After awhile I realized that they were great for leftovers and lunches because we weren’t heating anything in plastic. Then I started carrying them with me when I would go out to dinner with my friends to bring home my leftovers, or the hot wings I would have to bring home for my husband. My friends may have made a few jokes about it, but most people think it’s a great idea, and when I ask a server to put my take out order in it they don’t even bat an eye.

Love my pyrex. It is working it’s way into the main stream. Slow but sure- We have a store here that sells Organic Local foods prepared and frozen on the premises, and one cool thing they do is sell it in a Pyrex container, your put a small deposit on the container, then just exchange it everytime you buy a new entree! Sweet!

The store is Eat Local. The URL is eatlocalonline.com

Just made a new post about this at my raw food/natural living blog

I’m a 14 year old kid who loves to spend time in the kitchen, and Pyrex is the perfect thing for me!

Hope all is well,

Here’s mine:

Dear Large Pyrex With Rounded Corners,

You are large enough to fit any casserole I want to bake. Yet, your tender, rounded corners allow you to fit my sink without being tilted. My friend rejected you, and I offered you to my sister, but you were too scratched for her. When she spurned you, I pitied you and took you in. Our love has developed strongly. When you are gone, I will cry.

Love, Laura

Dear cobalt blue pyrex dish,

I found you at goodwill, dusty and hidden under the detritus of ugly mugs and chipped tea cups. I carefully wiped the grime from you and I knew we were meant for each other. I would never change you, only help you clean yourself up from the neglect that had befallen you and become the baking dish you were always meant to be. So mysterious yet you never can hide anything from me, you’re still transparent.

May our bond last for many wonderful years full of hot cooking and longing gazes into your cool blue hues.

Love,

Indy
