A Screen-Free Week Update

by Katy on May 7, 2015 · 15 comments

Today is Thursday, or day-four of Screen Free Week, and I wanted to slink over the blog and confess my sins.

Last night I watched an episode of Mad Men that’s been sitting in my DVR since Sunday night, as well as an episode of Supernatural with my 19-year-old son. My son and I have a weekly date to watch this show together and I didn’t want to miss out on our quality time together.

Yes, yes, it’s an lousy excuse and perhaps a flimsy one at that, but it’s what felt right at the time.

I’ve also been getting through a tremendous number of projects here at home, which seem much easier without the constant temptation to check Facebook or Twitter or whatever the hell else lives inside my laptop.

Also, without evening TV, (I never watch TV during the day) I get sleepy sooner and subsequently have been going to sleep earlier than normal. (Like 11:30 P.M. instead of 1 A.M.) Plus there have been a couple of naps.

I’ll write up a full blog post when Screen Free Week is over, but until then I’ve got projects to work on, outdoors to experience and people to take to the airport.

Mostly screenlessly yours,

Katy Wolk-Stanley

Supernatural is a must watch at my house with my 23 year old daughter who was very upset about the ending of last night’s show. It’s quality time for us too.

I am on a three week tour. I panicked for a moment that you might be spilling the ending of Mad Men for which I have been waiting for SEVEN YEARS.

I appreciate your not spilling the beans.

Life is all about balance. Some things, like time you your son, is far more valuable than non screen week. Not a flimsy excuse at all. No need to apologize for knowing your priorities.

I am a dingy, and forget it was this week. Somehow I had it in my head that it was next week. I’ll just have to be screen free then. Oops.

Geez, I miss you. Is there a twelve-step program for this addiction? If there is, I don’t want to know.

Miss your blog this week as well! We have chosen to go Screen “light” this week and that has been a success so far. The gorgeous spring weather has helped as well!!!

When home during the day I also never turn on the tv; huge time sink!

I was forced into some screen free time this week. Monday in Abq we had
a crazy hailstorm. We lost our phone and computer for two days. The repair guy said it was coincidental. But without the computer access I got so much done!
Also I think my mood improved!

I have to admit, we have screens on a lot over here, and we are working on it, but man its hard. I’m just impressed you made it to Wednesday night!! Good job and be proud that you only broke it for something special!

I use a computer all day at work, but being screen-free at home has been easy. Well, except I have to check my email at home, because I’ve applied for a job — don’t want to miss that kind of mail! It takes 15 seconds, though.

I work on a computer all day, too. Fortunately I don’t have one at home right now and I leave my laptop at work on the weekdays. I take it home on the weekends, but I don’t spend that much time on it.
Last week I read a lot, it was so nice. Our TV, Internet and phone was out due to flooding, on Sunday. It really opened my eyes as to how dependent we are on our TV for storm updates and how much we like watching certain programs.
I will admit, I’m a TV addict. I could probably do w/o the internet, but I love being able to watch the news and the shows I like. I think I need to re-evaluate my life!

I did very well until Saturday, and then I looked at Facebook. But five days of only business online was very beneficial to accomplishing more. It was a struggle to give up blogs and Facebook.
