Delicious Bottled Goodwill Food!

by Katy on April 1, 2013 · 35 comments

You all know that I love Goodwill, and you also know that I hate food waste. So why not combine my two loves and find a way to incorporate Goodwill food into my family’s repertoire?

Sure, the contents are of uncertain origin and age, but they’re in bottles, so they should be safe. Right?

Here’s a big bottle of peppers, I can see incorporating them into burritos or huevos rancheros.

¡Delicioso!

Peppers

This bottle is layered with beans and two types of peppers. Maybe chili?

Star food

This curvy gal is filled to the rim with citrus garlic and peppers. A scrumptious addition to quinoa.

Bottled food

This dynamic duo is fruit based, so oatmeal would be the perfect pairing. Sure the liquid is murky, but that’s just extra yumminess! See how the apples have settled to the bottom? Mmm . . .  mmm . . . good!

Apples?

Sometimes it’s easy to tell what goodies are held within the bottle, but oftentimes it’s a super fun mystery!

Is it mango? Is it chicken?

See? So fun!

??

If you too are a fan of deliciously mysterious bottled food, then please add your recipe ideas to the comments section below.

And make sure to get those comments in before April 1st is over. 😉

Here is the time to admit that I ate some bean bags I got from a church rummage sale during the fill-a-bag-for-$1 deal at the end. I opened up the bean bags, washed the contents, and through the beans into the pressure cooker. Who knows how old they were. They didn’t soften up that well, but we were really poor then (but rich in creativity, thankfully). Honestly, I’d still do it, though.

Oops! I THREW them into the pressure cooker!

Ugh! Once rented a vacation home that had those for decor. I put them away until we left….only thing worse would be an animal specimen in formaldyhyde (spelling?). Just never got what people saw in that icky stuff.

That last bottle looks like it contains human fingers. Halloween decor perhaps?

Hi Katie,
I do not think those were made to be consumed, they are decorative. i have bought them before at ” Big Lots” If they are consumables, they have to have certain labels on them by law. I believe they may have some ingredients that are not safe to eat, preservatives. they are pretty and cheap kitchen decor though…. Love your blog by the way !!!

Ewww! That last bottle’s contents remind me of High School Biology when we dissected fetal pigs! How about pairing them with the well-hidden Easter eggs you’ll find in a couple of weeks? Green Eggs & Ham indeed!

I never understand who thinks it is ok to donate those and have no idea who would buy them!

Katy April 1, 2013 at 1:53 pm

And I am baffled as to why they’re almost always priced at $7.99.

Ooh that last one looks like congealed raw chicken breasts. Yum.

I also can’t get over the combination of citrus, peppers, and garlic. Some kind of funky dip maybe?

😉

Lovin the April Fools

Those bottles always look super-delish when people display them next to their stovetops and they get all greasy and dusty. Bon appetit! Haha!

I love the curvy girl bottle, but I could not even stand to look at those as food or a decoration! The peppers were kinda pricey at $8.00.
Once I bought two cans of survival type packaged oatmeal and one of dried onions at an estate sale. Totally grossed out my daughter. I was making oatmeal bread like crazy and they were the best dried onions ever and lasted forever.
Happy April Fools to you all!

My mother bought me one of these once for Christmas. It was a chicken shape; not sure what the food stuff was. She could not understand why I wasn’t excited about (i.e. hated) it. Glad I’m not the only one.
