Five Frugal Things

Lane table listing

  1. I took a quick trip to Fred Meyer this morning to pick up Tillamook cheese, as it’s on sale for $4.99 per 2-lb brick. I’ll likely stop in a few more times this week, as the expiration date is around six months out. I also picked up a $1.39 gallon of 1% milk, which was nearing its expiration date. We usually buy whole milk, but I make an exception when it’s so deeply discounted. #WhatAmIaRockefeller?
  2. I hung three loads on laundry on the clothesline at the same time, which may be a record. It took a lot of hangers and doubling up on a few lightweight things like fleece blankets, but in the end, everything was dry. I know this probably only saved me around a dollar, but it gives me great pleasure, plusย our clothing lasts a heck of a lot longer.
  3. I finally listed my thrifted Lane table that I refurbished. I’ll be sad to see it go, but we’re about to pay out an enormous amount of college tuitionย for the fall term, so any bonus money will be welcome. I also signed up for a month of hospitalย shifts yesterday, which was much simpler as I no longer need to work around the kids’ schedules. Sniff . . .ย
  4. I darned a pair of my son’s socks which had two holes and one about-to-be hole. It took awhile to complete, but I had Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in the movie Sisters to keep me company.
  5. I stopped into a fancy women’s clothing consignment store the other day, as they always have a basket of free hangers for the taking. My son will need these for his dorm room, and the way I figure it, every dollar saved is an extra dollar for tuition, room and board.

Now your turn. What frugal things haveย youย been up to?

That table turned out really lovely. I hope it nets a healthy chunk of change for the college fund.

1. Made a pot of chicken-pasta-veggie soup for my work lunches this week that used up some leftover frozen roast chicken and the last of a bag of frozen peas and carrots.
2. Dug around in the back of the closet and pulled out some seldom-worn shoes to start wearing, now that mornings are getting too cool for sandals.
3. Put $40 in vacation money that we didn’t spend into the Christmas fund. (We took $60 for walking-around money and spent only $20 of it.)
4. Inventoried our little chest freezer to see what needs to be used up, which is how I found the chicken, peas and carrots that are having a starring role in soup.
5. Keeping on keeping on with the usual: packing lunch and drinks from home to work, wearing a cute thrifted outfit every day, and hanging washed clothing on the drying racks in the laundry room.

1. Had an HOA meeting after work that ran late. Really wanted to stop for something to eat on the way home, but I held off and had some Thai noodles I keep on hand for quick dinners instead.
2. My husband has been looking for old cabinets to put in the garage as part of his workshop. While talking to my sister about her kitchen renovation today, I realized they are going to be tearing out all the current cabinets. Instead of throwing them away, we are now going to take them off their hands. Win win for everyone!
3. Got a mystery shop for dinner on Friday night. I meal plan all week, but Friday night we usually do leftovers or takeout. This will let us have a family meal out, but won’t cost us a penny!
4. Have been eating leftover pancakes for breakfast this week. Warmed up in the toaster, they taste just like they do fresh. And of course they were made from scratch originally.
5. Found a penny on the seat in the Goodwill dressing room. A wheat penny, at that!

That table is beautiful.
1. My graduation was yesterday. I kept my free parking space at work and walked the ten minutes to university, saving parking fees of $3.60 per hour.
2. I had an hour wait after I picked up my regalia so I sat in the student lounge and ate a sandwich I brought from home. I did buy a coffee, but spent $4 instead of about $12.
3. My parents drove me back to my car after as it was pouring with rain and we went out for coffee and browsed the book shop. They shouted the coffee. I did find my best friend’s birthday present, so I was happy to have done that.
4. We planned to go out for a celebratory dinner with my parents (from our eating out budget, natch). My mum had a 25% off coupon at the restaurant we chose.
5. My dress was a thrifted beauty that I got brand new with tags for $6

Congratulations on your graduation, Mand!

And, incidentally, can you give us a quick outline of the Australian academic year? Clearly, yours is just ending as ours in the US is getting under way.

Reply

Mand01 September 13, 2016 at 6:47 pm

Thank you!
Our academic year runs from the end of February to the end of November. We have two semesters and I finished my last course in the first semester (end of July), hence a September graduation. If I had finished in November I would have had a March graduation. The September graduation is always smaller and usually picks up people like me who finished at odd times or who put off their graduation for whatever reason.

Mand01,
“Shouted” the coffee? Does that mean they paid? If so, how sweet. If not, what does it mean? The infinite variety of human speech! I love it.

Reply

Deb September 13, 2016 at 3:54 pm

yes, that’s what it means as in “I’ll shout for coffee”.
I travel back and forth from the US to Australia and speak both languages….still not completely fluent though ๐Ÿ™‚

Reply

Mand01 September 13, 2016 at 6:42 pm

Yes, they paid!
We say ‘my shout’, meaning ‘I’ll pay’ – similar to the phrase ‘my treat.’
I have no idea where it comes from!

You did a great job on the dress too. Dress clothes bought thrifted on a deal like that always make me feel wonderful. You’ve done a great job saving money!

Fellow Aussie! My sister graduated too last Wednesday- not UWS (or WSU now) by any chance? Would have been a small world if we were both there! Congrats on your graduation. And we shouted her dinner as a well done too!

1. I was given a free ticket to see a play this weekend, which was great.
2. parked in a free spot on the street and walked instead of in the pay lot next to the theatre.
3. we are coming up on a really crazy time at work so I spent my day off yesterday cooking meals and freezing them so I won’t eat out instead.
4. I baked several batches of cookies as well to bring in for my staff during our busy days.
5. shopped at Aldi, which always saves me money and I found a quarter on the ground.

Brilliant about the hangers, Katy! I have an empty nest for the first time this fall as well. One perk of having a daughter as an RA: she gets free room and board (we are in a big 10 university town where both go to school), so that helps a lot with the huge cost of 2 in school. Also she shares food with me when we meet up. After a lifetime of feeding her, it’s a nice change.

My granddaughter was an RA and got free room but NOT board. That’s an even bigger help!!

1) I am taking the week off of work, and spending the time cleaning and organizing my house and hanging out with friends and family who live in town.
2) Cleaned out a spare bedroom. Took a load to Goodwill.
3) Ate leftovers for lunch.
4) Went to a free class yesterday with a friend. Also met another friend at the Botanical gardens (she had a free guest pass for my admission).
5) Bought household cleaning items and so.e hygeine items at Target. used coupons and didn’t buy anything unnecessary except for a really delicious fall candle.

1. Needed to wash the siding, figure I managed to water the perennial plants too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

2. Had gone to a our local grocery store for some very reduced items on a new store online coupon program, they didn’t take them off my account as it had not loaded properly. Went back to the store today and used the coupons as they were still loaded and they were items we use a lot of.

3. Used drinking water left in a glass to water a house plant.

4. We got pizza last week and they always provide free napkins. The girl gave us so many they will last a over a month!

5. Weather is really cooling off, no air conditioning constantly running and now leaving windows open at night!

6. Made a note on my calendar several months ago to contact our local youth foundation this fall regarding a scholarship opp for my daughter I had heard about – emailed them tonight to follow-up.

7. Start working two extra nights a week again tomorrow and Thursday. Will be hard as I will be working a 13-14 hour day but the money will help cover some increases in our bills and provide some extra savings I need to build up for next summer.

8. Have Swagbuck videos running on my phone while I type this.

1. Needed tomatoes this week, so bought them for cheap from a neighbor’s market cart he puts out on the curb.
2. Salvaged a big stack of copy paper printed on one side and passed it on to a family with 8 kids, for art projects.
3. Found a bunch of printed out point-of-sale coupons on my last shopping trip; some were for stuff we buy a lot, the rest will be given away.
4. Ate lunch with my SIL the other day and it was so crowded we ended up sitting at the counter. There was a stack of newspapers nearby and while we ate, I paged through the coupon section and scored 8 coupons for things we often buy!
5. Attended a food pantry volunteer luncheon (I’m on the board and also collect and donate canned goods) and came away with a small sack of candy and a jar of strawberry jam, which I gave my husband, and a bookmark and special penny with heart punched out, which I’ll send to a friend who needs cheering up.
6. Saw some photos of stuff fellow librarians were buying at Target for pennies and decided I needed some for a contest we’ll be doing soon, and instead of driving there tomorrow (a 20 min trip), I messaged my niece, who works at one, and asked her to go get the stuff and mail it to me. Postage will still be cheaper than gas to drive there and back!

1. Husband and I travel a lot for work and cannot stand to throw away half used bottles of hotel shampoo so we bring them home. Yesterday I got frustrated when a drawer would not close and realized it was being blocked by a tiny shampoo bottle. I dug all of them out, put a funnel in the top of a large nearly empty shampoo bottle and emptied all of the tiny bottles into the large one. Suddenly had 18 ounces of shampoo, just from salvaged hotel shampoos. Some people are more particular about shampoos but I am not, so using mixed cheapo shampoos is fine with me and the husband.
2. Husband loves cheddar bread from a local bakery so buys a loaf about once every two weeks. $8.50!! a loaf. Yesterday I used the Frugal Girl blog white bread recipe and kneaded in some cheddar before the second rising in the loaf pan. Came out PERFECT! Husband said it was better than the bakery, softer in texture. I used cheese bought on sale and shredded and stored in the freezer. I will be making this every other week for him.
3. I picked up the mail for a friend on vacation and she returned today and gave me a gift of 8 truffles in different Halloween shapes—pumpkins, skeletons, fall leaf and so on. Really gorgeous and the one I have already gobbled down was very tasty.
4. We reuse plastic bags when picking up dog poop when we walk our dogs. I discovered that if I carefully take the wrapping off 4-packs of toilet paper that I can reuse them at least once before throwing them away by using them as poop picker uppers. Ditto for the few magazines I get—two come wrapped in plastic and it drives me nuts but I have learned how to open and use them for poop gathering, too.
5. Shredded newspaper I have been saving and added it to the compost heap to balance some of the green stems and vines we are throwing in as we clean out the garden.
6. Husband went to the store and found burger at half price so we formed it into patties and froze it.

I sometimes travel for work and I always return with a couple of little bottles of shampoo, conditioner and hand cream. Once I made a point of comparing the ingredients in the expensive toiletries with the more moderately priced brands. Surprise – the ingredients were often pretty much the same.

1. I wanted to grab a frozen pizza but we ate home cooked instead.
2. Found an original oil painting at GW and will get it for my daughter if it’s still there tomorrow. She didn’t answer me until after they were closed. She’s furnishing a new house.
3. Put a bottle refund in my home improvement fund and transferred money to save up for property taxes.
4. Working Swagbucks to get a little money for Christmas.
5. Wearing a thrifted shirt and consignment jeans

I’d been planning to buy some nice Oxford’s for work, and was saving up to do so. But I stayed with my boyfriend for the weekend and forgot work shoes, and stopping at home in the way to work is annoying, so I stopped at the thrift store near his house, and found a beautiful pair or Oxford’s in my size for $5.30. They do have a heel while I usually wear flats, but overall I’m delighted by them.

Went out on the river with my kayak club. $20 a year gets you free lessons, everything is volunteer driven. Still carrying my (very used but serviceable) boat strapped to my car itself as roof racks are expensive.

1. I talked to my yoga studio and will transition to work-study for 6 months, meaning free yoga! Saving me $110 a month starting in October (yoga is non-negotiable for me) and I will be at the studio during times I would usually be.
2. Took the bus to and from downtown to save the big parking costs and traffic woes to meet a friend today. We went to a fancy new place which was not frugal, but I saved about $10 and frustration by taking the bus.
3. Lined dried laundry this weekend in the lovely weather.
4. I was on a work trip last week and walked around the city for an extra day, rather than taking cabs, even though the humidity was off the charts in the south.
5. I didn’t buy any new clothes, though I have been bored by my wardrobe. Then I realize I want new clothes because I am comparing myself to what someone else wore. Gotta work on that.

I totally get your #1 and #5. I long for new clothes mostly because I’m comparing myself to several women in my office who RARELY repeat their clothes. And mine are in a perpetual rotation. I don’t know how they do it, but I know I don’t have the money to do it. Nor do I want to spend so much money on so many clothes.

Also, I used to do a work/study with my yoga studio and felt very fortunate to save the fees. I did it for a year, But I ended up resenting having to get there an hour early to clean and stay an hour after to clean…not only sweeping and mopping the room, but the entire two floor studio, two loads of laundry, dishes, changing out the water jug, cleaning two bathrooms, windows, checking students in, selling products + classes, etc.. Many, many times the class would be so full they asked me to give my spot to a paying customer. Then it happened four Saturdays in a row, and I decided I would rather pay and be certain I could practice instead of just being a free cleaning lady. I’m sure your studio is different, but make sure it’s an even exchange of benefits.

1. Kroger had 4 pound bags of sugar and 8 oz blocks of cheese for 99 cents. We have our house listed, hoping to move soon, so I am trying not to stock up on food. But I bought a few of each.
2. I bought a plastic toy on a local FB site for $5. My intention was to list it on ebay, but it was way larger than I had imagined. Instead I removed all the accessories and sold those on ebay. Also sold three books and some flash cards on ebay this week.
3. Made two wooden birdhouses out of scrap wood and old license plates in our garage, and sold them for $10. Not a great profit, but they were fun to put together and now those materials won’t be in a landfill. I think fairy houses would also be fun to make.
4. Dropped off three large bags of clothing/household goods yesterday at our local church rummage barn.
5. Made a batch of cookies on Monday, and a pan of rice krispy treats last night.

1. Baked bread yesterday, using my usual recipe. One loaf for use today, and the other two in the freezer for later use.
2. Homemade sandwiches for the kids’ school lunches and my lunch at work today.
3. My husband went hunting at our country property last night, and shot two deer. The meat provides plenty of meals, and also gifts for family.
4. Our chickens are still laying, so we have enough eggs.
5. We were offered free tickets at my place of work for a film at a film festival in my town, this week, so my husband and I have a movie date tomorrow. The film is a documentary about the American politician Weiner.

1. Our local HUGE kid’s consignment sale is this week. I entered over 300 items valued at $1200+. I’ll get 75% of that back since I volunteered 2 shifts. Fingers crossed people like my taste in children’s clothes! (Note: it seems like a huge amount because it is. These items were mostly purchased before my foray into frugality).

2. We have been so super busy these last few weeks, but this Saturday we are devoting the entire day to spending quality time with our almost 3 year old daughter. I have a day of fun and mostly free things planned!

3. De-cluttering our home, which to me is frugal. A clean, clutter-free space makes me want to stay home more!

4. I received 2 $10 coupons of a $10 purchase for a department store. I will be using them to buy some small Christmas gifts.

5. I bought my brothers their Christmas presents, $70 Cabelas button down shirts on sale for $9! (I love Brad’s Deals website, I do all of Christmas shopping through there.)

6. More than 5, yay! I am diligently racking up Swagbucks for Christmas. I am at 3500 points now, coupled with good deals, I think I can knock out quite a few Christmas presents on Amazon!

1. I previously shared that I bought 2 organic chickens at Aldi on Saturday with $6 off stickers, which made them around $6.50 each. Threw one in the freezer and when I went to cook the second the next day it smelled funky when I opened the packaging. I thought maybe it was just me but when DH walked in from outside he said, “What’s that odor?” As he has been a certified Safe Serve restaurant manager in his previous positions, we didn’t eat it. I took the frozen one back to Aldi and they refunded my money and had me pick out a comparably priced package of chicken. I will need to take the packaging back for the one we pitched and they will do the same. I came home and grabbed it out of my recycle bin where it was fortunately right on top! I love Aldi’s and I have never had a problem with markdown meat at Aldi’s prior to this. They are great at making things right!
2. When I pulled into the parking lot at Aldi’s there was a perfectly fine white tubular hanger laying there. I picked it up and into my car it went.
3. Did 4 mystery shops last night- 2 at grocery stores and 2 at the “Dollar” type general stores. Checked the clearance racks at the grocery stores and found canning vinegar for 40ยข a bottle at one and Oregon Chai concentrate for $1.31 at another. Both items we use so I bought 2 of each.
4. Found a penny on the floor at one of the stores.
5. Took my cans and some old aluminum chair frames to the recycle place. Got $11.30. Also took 3 bags of books to the used book store nearby and got $33 in credit. Both places are about 12 miles from me so I always try to go to both on the same trip.

Great find with the clothes hangers! This week:

1. I cooked lots of meals ahead of time over the weekend. I made Swedish meatballs with a dill sauce and a corn and poblano soup.

2. Instead of hiring contractors, we’re doing all the work in our new home ourselves. I’ve already learned several heartbreaking lessons about paint and valuables–they don’t mix!

3. I rented more cookbooks and movies from the library this week. I haven’t had a spare second to look at any of them!! We’re taking a break on the house renovations tonight, so hopefully I’ll be able to read a few cookbooks for next week’s meal ideas.

4. I washed clothes in our homemade laundry soap this weekend.

5. I plan on visiting my Dad this weekend, which requires a five-hour drive. I’ll be sure to pack my own meals and snacks from home to save money!

I love that table. You did a great job!

1) I picked up 4 meals for work lunches at Dollar Tree yesterday $4. It’s really saving me a lot of money during the week. We don’t have a lot of leftovers, because I don’t cook during the week.
2) I fixed homemade chicken noodle soup in the crockpot yesterday. I ate some for dinner last night and that will be dinner tonight too and lunch for hubby today. I love Fall – lots of crockpot meals coming up.
3) I picked up an audiobook and a regular book at the Library. I started reading the Power of No last night. Inspiration for life and that will save money too. I’ve started turning down involvement in many social events and feeling a lot less guilty in doing so. I’m tired of so much “busyness”.
4) Thankful I had some allergy meds here at work. No need to run out and buy any that way.
5) I didn’t buy a Lear Jet.

1. Will be going to an amusement park on sunday for a company outing. (its about an hours’ drive away). Free passes (worth $38 ea) and park dollars for food ($40 in all). They have a bunch of ‘restaurants’ there and the food is pretty good. My best friend is joining me and my son.
2. Hung my laundry on the line. mmm. smells so good.
3. Hemmed a large bath sheet since the binding was coming apart.
4. Scored two really nice, brand new, in the box, watches for my son off of shopgoodwill.com. (Darn you, Katy! Now I’m addicted). One I paid about 18% of the going prices and the other was about 30%. Gave him one for his birthday and will save the other for Christmas. Looking for one more watch for Christmas for him. (he loves nice watches and these will be his expensive gift.) these were watches that originally went for $125-200 a piece. Also bought one for myself – an Invicta – that, according to their website, SRP’d for $195. I paid $11. $11!!!!!
5. contacted a large, national shoe company (that is actually local) about an exercise bra I purchased that i am apparently allergic to whatever the band is made from. They told me to go back to their store and return. Money back on my debit! (i was disappointed that i had an issue. it fit perfectly and was so soft – but i could do without the rash.)

1. Brought lunch to work from things hanging out in the fridge.
2. A friend bought lunch and bought some sushi as a surprise for me. I shared carrots and watermelon. We laughed a lot.
3. Driving to work this morning, I thought about what to make for dinner and stopping at the grocery store. I realized I have stuff in the fridge, that while I may not want it, needs to used up. No grocery shopping for dinner…..
4. I bought a couple of groupons with their 20% off sale. If I’m going to go out for dinner, I may as well go as little as possible.
5. I didn’t sleep well last night and really, really want a cup of coffee to get thru teaching my 2:30-4:20 class. I am hoping that my walk to class will revive me as I really don’t feel like spending $2.00 and wasting a paper cup because i don’t have my travel mug.

(1) Our city had their ” free” weekend . Put out our 20.5 foot leather sectional that ” didn’t owe us anything”.Had a stand off between two vehicles while still putting it out and assembling . Saved me having to pay someone to haul away. I had purchased it used over a decade ago.
(2) Was at a meeting at a hotel, picked up some of the pens they had out for notes.
(3)Brought a daughter along to hear the speaker. We were treated to a dinner buffet.
(4)Made myself go through my “getting soft” peaches. Two were thrown but 5 were rescued and frozen for future baking.
(5) there was a left over PB sandwich. I placed it in a bread bag so as not to dry out.
The bread in #5 was Dave’s Killer Bread, that has been spoken about on this site. My Costco started carrying it and it is awesome!

Great job on the table Katy. I hope someone buys it that appreciates the beauty you brought out in it.

1. There is a butterfly bush outside the window by my computer. I love looking out the window and seeing butterflies, and the occasional hummingbird. Free, frugal entertainment.

2. My birthday was last week so I stopped yesterday to pick up my free birthday pizza. It will be dinner tonight.

3. My husband needed a few screws. When we went to Home Depot, the other day, they didn’t have what he needed out and I asked for help but no one came.
I ordered them on-line so they’ll be at the front desk for pick-up. I went through the United Mileage Plus portal. I’ll only earn a very few miles but it will be enough to keep me from losing miles (which happens after 18 months of inactivity).

4. I had mature bananas so I made banana bars. I even added some pumpkin puree that was leftover. You can’t taste it but it added some nutritional value and moistness.

5. I have gone back to being gluten free. It really makes a difference in whether or not I suffer from hot flashes. When I feel better I’m able to function better. I don’t buy special products, just avoid foods that obviously contain gluten.

* Won 2 movie tickets. Will bring my daughter. Other daughter will go to the pre-paid recreation center with daddy during the movie.
* Went to a city activity offering a free BBQ (hotdogs, chips, beverages, cotton candy and popcorn).
* Trying canning next weekend. If it works well, we will have many mason jars filled with goodies for winter. Friends will join, so we’ll be able to exchange jars.
* Picked crabapples, plums and apples last weekend
* Groceries will be minimal this week. Working on emptying freezers and fridge and using the veggies from our garden.
* Picked-up full time hours for this week and next week. Working on a unit I don’t like (hospital), I’m focusing on the pay!

Have a great frugal day!

Love the table!
1. Felt horrid-sinus congestion, cough etc. Called my doc, couldn’t get in, so went to the workplace clinic which is free for employees. Saved $20.
2. Got a free Twist (like sprite) 2L with my Speedway card. Drank it this week while ill (coughing makes me nauseous.)
3. Ate several meals of egg & cheese on english muffin. Eggs and cheese on sale at Kroger, english muffins free from my thrift store.
4. Looked through several of my freebie mags (mercury something, i googled free magazines several months ago. Now they send me emails for free ones. I think it’s because you have to answer what industry you work in, and i work for a large hospice chain.) I take them into our Crisis waiting room when I’m done (i’m a psych nurse.)
5. I have a bone density scan tomorrow and have been doing several online health classes to increase my HRA from $250 to $750 for 2017.
Not a bad week!

Post Wedding Edition:
1. Instead of wedding cake, we served donuts – which were in the wrong color of sprinkles. Oh poor baby …on the other hand….bakery confirmed it was their mistake so there will be a yet to be determined fix.
2. Flowers were also messed up – they missed the x2 order for corsages so they were delivered free with a refusal of a tip because he said “it is all my fault”.
3. Major leftovers – shared with kind friends who helped serve, sisters in town, family who were on the road and could take stuff that didn’t have to be kept cold.
4. Still eating leftovers here at home including the over bought beer and wine.
5. Used neighbor’s recycling and trash containers (with permission)so no additional expense for overflowing ours.
BONUS #6. Lovely wedding, happy couple, great party…..

Hurray on a successful wedding! And the things that don’t go as planned make for good stories later on. ๐Ÿ™‚

#7. Went to Starbucks today – I buy my boss chai each day I work – and they offered me 2 breakfast sandwiches that had not been picked up. Split one with my husband who was driving me into work and he ate the second for lunch- thanks Starbucks ladies!!!!

The table is lovely. I think that I would have difficulty parting with it.
1) I went through a stack of magazines this weekend that I already read and dropped them at the local library’s share bin.
2) I am visiting my beloved cousin. I purchased my plane ticket with credit card/loyalty points.
3) Today we visited a national park near my cousin’s home. We packed a cooler with lunch and had a picnic. It was a beautiful day. I insisted on paying the very reasonable entrance fee. I am happy to celebrate the National Park’s centennial.
4). I treated myself to a Starbucks’ venti latte yesterday while waiting for my connecting flight. I was jostled in the busy Atlanta airport and dropped it. I made a huge mess and was so embarrassed. The barista at the coffee shop remade my drink at no charge and was quite kind. Not really frugal but random acts of kindnes, whether I am giving or receiving, always make me feel rich.
5) We have eaten at home and cooked together during my visit.
