Food Bank Fun

Would it surprise you to know that my favorite annual event is the Cans Film Festival?

Ahh . . .

The South of France, the company of international movie stars, a new designer gown to show off in as I slowly walk down the red carpet. Pausing to grant short interviews to my adoring fans.

Wait a minute?! I said cans not Cannes.

The Cans Film Festival is an annual food drive put on by The Oregon Food Bank in cooperation with a local movie theater chain. The donation of three cans of food will get you into most any movie, all day long. And we’re talking first run movies people. You even get a free small popcorn!

It’s my one chance all year to see a brand new movie without feeling like I was robbed. Plus, I know I’m doing a good deed for Oregon’s hungry. (I do have my eye on the new Coen brothers movie!)

But this is not the only event that The Oregon Food Bank puts on. There are many other opportunities throughout the year to do something fun for the simple price of a food donation. We’ve gone to plays, on amusement park rides, and yes — even the movies.

Contact your local food bank to find out what’s available in your area. And if they don’t have anything set up, this is an opportunity to volunteer your ideas and talents.

So stock up on some high quality canned goods and go have some fun. Because you don’t need a red carpet to feel like a million bucks.
