Frugal Portland as Seen by The NY Times

Click here to read a lengthy NY Times article about some of the fun and frugal Portland offerings. It’s almost enough to get me off my duff and cycling around my hometown.

Almost.

All the talk about beer in this article reminded me of the long-ago—mid 1990’s—trips we made every year to the Portland Brewers Festival. Sigh. Good times.

We just got back from a 4-day weekend in Portland. I hadn’t been in 10 years, and I’m sorry I stayed away so long!

We enjoyed a lot of low-cost treats, from the weekend market to the crazy and delicious Voodoo Donuts. We ate our dinners at happy hour prices in some really fantastic restaurants, and we saved money by taking the train instead of driving. We also walked everywhere for exercise, but public transportation is easy to find and use.

We even spotted a celebrity at breakfast – Harrison Ford! He’s in town filming a movie.

We used hotel points to stay at the Hilton downtown, but locals told us we could have called ahead to even swankier hotels and asked for a discount. Most of them will do it because tourism is down in the city.

If you haven’t ever been, go. And if you haven’t been in a while, go back!
