Giveaway — A Year of Pies: A Seasonal Tour of Home Baked Pies — A Cookbook

by Katy on August 27, 2012 · 347 comments

Note: This giveaway has ended. Congratulations to Donna whose comments was randomly chosen to win an autographed copy of Ashley English’s “A Year of Pies.”

HaveI got a treat for you, which is the opportunity to win an autographed copy of Ashley English’s A Year of Pies: A Seasonal Tour of Home Baked Pies. You may remember English as the author of The Homemade Living series that includes Keeping Bees, Canning and Preserving, Home Dairy and Keeping Chickens. Or, you simply might know Ashley English a the author of the blog Small Measure.

Man-O-Shevitz, is this woman prolific!

I had initially been sent a single copy of the book to use as a giveaway, but after ruining the pages with my drool reading the book like a grown-up, I decided that there was no way I was giving this book away, and I would need a separate copy for a giveaway. Although I haven’t baked any of the pies yet, it’s only because I’ve been in New York. Luckily, an extra copy (autographed no less!) arrived during my absence, so I’m finally ready to share my delicious bounty.

This beautiful cookbook is destined to become your go-to resource for all things pie. It’s that good!

To enter to win a copy of A Year of Pies: A Seasonal Tour of Home Baked Pies, just write your favorite kind of pie in the comments section below. I will randomly choose a winner at 9 P.M. Pacific time on Friday, August 31. U.S. residents only, please enter one time only.

Here, I’ll get you started. My favorite pie is homemade blueberry pie. (Unless it’s apple, lemon merengue or coconut cream. 😉 )

Good luck, happy pie baking and a big thank you to Lark Books for mailing out an extra book to one particularly selfish blogger!

Before my Mom would let me go away to college, she made sure I knew how to make a proper pie crust 🙂 I’ve kind of gotten out of the habit, but my favorite is rhubarb.

My favorite kind of pie is one I adapted from the movie “Waitress.” (If you haven’t seen it and you like pie at all, then you need to go watch it! Just make sure you’re not dieting at the time, because it will make you crave pie like mad.) Anyway, one of the pies she makes in the film she calls “Lonely Chicago Pie.” It’s blackberry-chocolate, and I’ve adapted a recipe from watching her make it in the movie. Graham cracker crust, brown sugar sprinkled on the bottom, then crush blackberries into melted chocolate and pour into the pie. I add a little salt in the mix – just a pinch – to take the edge off of the chocolate. MMMM!!!

My favorite pie is pecan. I was born in Mississippi on an Air Force Base. There we pecan trees on the base and we would go and shake the trees and pick up the pecans. We would have bags of pecans for my mom. Great memories.

Chocolate Angel Pie is my favorite. It has a baked meringue crust and the filling is whipped cream, melted chocolate, and a pinch of salt. The pie chills in the refrig for an hour or two and then we devour it. We celebrate birthdays with this pie instead of cake.

Banana cream or coconut cream, I can’t decide.

Reply

Pollyanna August 27, 2012 at 9:15 am

My favorite to eat and to make is Coconut Cream, my grandfather’s favorite and now my husband’s favorite. It takes time to stir it constantly until it thickens, and to get the coconut toasted just right for on top of the whipped cream, but I truly “stir with love” on this one. And I would LOVE a copy of Ashley’s book!

There is a part of me that CRAVES pie. But, I am picky about my pie. I cannot get store bought pie past my lips. I love sitting, staring, waiting for inspiration. I look like quite the space cadet to anyone who walks past when I am dreaming up a pie. My favorite pie is one that ends up being a day dream come true. To pull a dream pie out of the oven and see people enjoy it as much as I enjoyed dreaming it and making it is definitely my most favorite pie. I think I will go make one now! Perhaps a grape pie…

Yay Reese! Very Much agreed with the variety listed, but due to Grandmas Thanksgiving Traditions, I have ALWAYS loved a creamy Sweet Potato Pie… ” Never use Cinnamon without Nutmeg”
One of Grandmas Culinary tip which echoes in my head every time I stand at the mixer, added the spices to taste because this family recipe is based on a familiarity of the consistency of the unbaked pie batter and seasoned to taste from memory, and when some one tastes it, and wants the recipe, a part of me Loves tapping my temple and heart and telling them that’s where it is and shall remain.
I never thought my Love for this traditional family dish would ever be challenged, and it wasn’t for years. Until I went to Hawaii….
Last year living on the Big Island of Hawaii I was introduced to an entirely different type of Sweet Potato Pie, made from Hawaiian Purple Sweet Potatoes and topped with a creamy coconut topping, called Haupia that is slightly sweet and just barely thicker than Meringue. My taste buds didnt know what to do… My brain had been challenged and I felt like an unfaithful spouse.
When I called my father a few days later to break the news that I had tasted something almost as good as Grandmas recipe, he didn’t believe me… and I don’t blame him. Sweet potato is still my favorite… I love both recipes… almost equally.

My favorite pie is homemade cherry pie, but the best pie I’ve made was a chocolate ganache tart with fresh raspberries arranged on top, dusted with powdered sugar.

My favorite is pumpkin. I could eat a whole one all by myself (but I don’t)!

My favorite pie is one my mom used to make to get rid of the abundance of zucchini that grew in my dad’s garden. It was a sneaky pie, and I think truthfully that is why it’s special to me. It tasted and looked just like an apple pie, but no apples were harmed during the making of this dessert. It was all zucchini.peeled and seeded and sliced thin enough, the veggie soaked up the cinnamon and sugar and took on a while new identity. Like I said, sneaky!
