Giveaway Week — Home Dairy With Ashley English

by Katy on March 27, 2011 · 94 comments

Please note that this giveaway has ended. Congratulations to “Kristin B,” whose comment was randomly chosen as winner!

Today is day seven, the very last day of Giveaway Week and I am giving away a copy of Home Dairy With Ashley English: All You Need to Know to Make Cheese, Yogurt, Butter & More.

You probably know that I am very much a make it from scratch kind of womyn gal, but I have yet to make the leap to my own dairy products, (although I have been wanting to try The Frugal Girl’s yogurt recipe.) And if Ashley English’s books on Canning, Keeping Chickens and Keeping Bees are any indication, this book is going to be filled with both information and inspiration.

To enter to win this book, write something in the comments section about why you want to win this book.

I will randomly choose a winner this Tuesday, March 29 at 9:00 P.M., west coast time.

I would love to share it with a friend. We both are working on getting away from processed food. I am not sure how ambitious we really would be in making our own dairy products but I know it will be an inspirational read. Thank you for so many opportunites this week.

Love your efforts at helping the rest of us to learn how to live responsibly and supporting other writers with that same mindset at the same time! Would love to know how to make more of our own dairy products.

Thanks!

I have been REALLY wanting to make my own yogurt and cheese, but I never ever buy milk, so it requires a special trip to the store whenever I have the urge, and I never make that special trip. This would really get me going!

Reply

Jennifer March 27, 2011 at 5:06 am

I have a cheese obsession. If I make my own, I may save some $$$!

Reply

Amy March 27, 2011 at 5:12 am

Ooh! This would be awesome to have. I’ve been making yogurt for a while now but would love to give cheese and butter and other dairy a try.

Reply

Mary Kay March 27, 2011 at 5:15 am

I would like to try making yogurt. It must be much healthier and cheaper than store bought, as well as more environmentally friendly.

Reply

Donna March 27, 2011 at 5:22 am

My family has started purchasing milk from a local dairy recently. We enjoy drinking fresh milk and a request has been made by my children to make fresh yogurt and cheese. I want my children to help with this process and I think Ashley’s dairy book would be a great educational resource for this life skill project.

Reply

Mel March 27, 2011 at 5:44 am

I would love to try making more on my own (we do make yougurt) as we are trying to get away from processed products as much as possible, step by step.

Reply

Carissa March 27, 2011 at 5:52 am

I also make many, many things from scratch, but have been too intimidated by dairy products (apart from creme fraiche). Would love to win this book!

Reply

I’ve become addicted to Greek yogurt in the last few years. I’d love to be able to make it at home!

Reply

Heather March 27, 2011 at 6:36 am

Just last night I made some butter. I make yogurt weekly. I cook with the buttermilk. However, I have yet to branch out into actual cheese.

Reply

Emily March 27, 2011 at 6:44 am

I’m sort of new to this whole frugal thing but dairy is a big part of my family’s diet and I would love to try my hand at making yogurt, butter and especially cheese! (I did make butter once in elementary school, when we all passed around a bottle full of cream shaking it all day until it turned solid. Pretty cool!) I have a fantasy about moving to the country and becoming a cheesemaker, so this might very well be the first step on my path to realizing my dream!

Reply

Beth D. March 27, 2011 at 6:52 am

I would like to win to learn how to make fresh mozzarella (is it in the book? I hope so). Also, I don’t like the anti-fungal additives a lot of packaged cheese contains.

I’m a big fan of this author and would love to have this book!!! I’m also going to ask my library to buy a copy!

Ooh, I would love to have this book! I make yogurt on a regular basis and butter is on my list of things to try. I’ve found most cheese-making tutorials to be overwhelming, but I know Ashley’s style is pretty laidback, so I think this would be a great resource.

Reply

fae March 27, 2011 at 8:11 am

Because my partner is a cheese addict. 🙂

To be less silly, because I love trying to make as much as I can at home, but the dairy recipes in larger recipe collections always seem to be missing some pertinent bit of information. Also, because I think I may have finally found a good source for the milk.

Reply

Bonnie Raffo March 27, 2011 at 8:58 am

I was just looking into making yogurt yesterday! I saw it on a crockpot website. It doesn’t sound like the slow cooker way is the best but I am dying to try it. The cost comparison to store bought yogurt is unreal!

Reply

kelley March 27, 2011 at 9:02 am

i make a lot of things scratch myself but dairy products have been tricky. even finding sources for local organic milk is sometimes a challenge but it’s definitely a change i’d like to make & this would be super helpful.

Reply

Kat C March 27, 2011 at 9:06 am

I’ve semi successfully made yogurt using the Frugal Girl’s recipe (it’s never smooth & creamy but it tastes good). I’m curious about homemade cheese, since cheese is one of my favourite foods.

(disclaimer:I live in Canafa, not sure if I qualify for your giveaway)

What a great book! Love to win and share the dairy-making experiences with my daughter this summer!

Reply

Well, The Frugal Girl’s gotten me going on yogurt, and now I just want to tackle more dairy. I told my son the other day that we could maybe try to make homemade kefir and his eyes just lit up, so this book would be a great help!

One day I’d like to own a family cow – have a small farm. This would help me get ready for that long-term life plan, since a single cow can produce a staggering amount of milk each week!

Heck yes, how to make your own cheese?! I’ve tried out Kristen’s yogurt, and would looooove to make my own cheese and butter.

I’ve been trying to make even more of my own food (and live more sustainably in general), so I’d love to have a copy of this book. I was actually planning on trying yogurt soon, so this would be absolutely perfect!

Reply

Kat March 27, 2011 at 11:34 am

Oooh, I’ve been waiting for this one to come up. I already make my own yogurt and I know at least one person who has made cheese at home. I really want to try it myself.

Reply

Because my husband would like to have me try it (he’s the real cheesehead around here), because I’d like to try it, because Ashley English’s books all sound great, and because it’s been super-generous of you to do all these book offers this week. Thanks!

I need to add more “homemade” to my repertoire. Yes, bread and jam are good things, so are pickles. But cheese? Yes please.

Reply

I LOVE Ashley English’s books. I already make my own yogurt, but haven’t delved into cheese and butter yet. I’d really appreciate this book as I know the information will be great!

We live in the city, but have a decent size yard for being city-folk.

We just built a chicken coop, and are about to get our city-limit of 3 chickens. We also have a next door neighbor (with a lot more land) who is grandfathered in to being allowed “livestock”. Being in the city, we COULD have up to three pigmy goats without a permit, but we just reached an agreement with the neighbor next door to house a goat or two for us with their goats and sheep.

This book would be an excellent resource for us new goat owners. (My wife grew up on a farm, but hasn’t been a farmer in a long time, so any help is good help.)

I would love to learn to make my own cheeses and yogurt, without additives and with healthy non chemical laden local milk… this contributes to sustainable living and (for me) keeping kosher 🙂 would get used!!!!

I live in a land of cheesemakers – Vermont. Great dairy is abundant and while I will still want to support them by buying their specialties for a treat I would love to make some of the everyday dairy products I use myself.

When I saw this, I immediately thought of my mom, who raised us with fresh dairy milk and good organic vegetables from our garden and sometimes the store. I would love to give it to her–she already makes her own yogurt sometimes but to give her other good ideas would be great! It would be used, I promise!

Thanks for offering these giveaways!

I actually have this book from the library. My husband and I are known throughout both of our families as “people who eat a lot of cheese.” I would like to take this moment to reassure our loved ones that we have had our cholesterol checked and both of us have excellent numbers so we are perfect candidates for eating even more cheese and other tasty dairy products. We plan on getting goats as soon as our living situation permits it (goats seem like thy would be a little more manageable than cows).

Reply

Jackie March 28, 2011 at 9:04 am

Oh please, please, please!

I recently began a restricted diet and so I can’t eat most store bought yogurt and most aged cheeses. So I’ve really wanted to learn how to make mozarella/ricotta things like that on my own. I’ve tried to make yogurt a few times before and did OK, but I think that it would be better for me than the store bought stuff.

If I don’t win, I’m definitely going to see if I can this book at the library!

Jennifer March 28, 2011 at 9:29 am

As my husband embraces frugality more, it has given me the motivation to look for other ways to live life more simply. I’ve started cooking at home and making things from scratch A LOT more than I ever used to, and what I’ve found is that we enjoy the food more, feel better health wise, and know we are saving money. I would LOVE the chance to delve into the world of making your own dairy products. I used to be afraid to try new things, but after a few failed attempts in the kitchen, I quickly got over that. I won’t learn if I never try! 🙂

My husband has been extremely ill the last two years, and we have been trying everything possible to help him get well. My husband had never had more than a cold, and the doctors are baffled as much as we are. We were eating a healthy diet and doing all the right things before, but now we are having to become even more selective in our food choices. I have started making/doing everything from scratch. I have never even heard of this book or author before. I now have it on my wish list.

Thank you for a GREAT blog. I am learning so much on my journey for improved health/life.

Something that really helped me was reiki. Get initiated, both of u and practice it as much as possible. Reiki taught me to be grateful most of the time for many, many things.
Also laughter heals: deliberately get/borrow funny movies, joke books, cartoons and ask friends to make u smile.
Meditation too is wonderful.
