June Food Stamp Challenge — Day Eight

by Katy on June 8, 2010 · 3 comments

Today is day eight of the June Food Stamp Challenge. This post will be short because I’ve been working and had minimal access to the computer, as my older son has been monopolizing it for a school project.

I was dispatched for last minute glue sticks at 10:30 P.M. last night, which included an additional desperate plea for ice cream. I decided to buy my son one of those new small packages of ice cream as a reward for all the hard work he was putting into his project. It set me back a dollar, and I really liked the built in portion control. Plus, there was no risk of my husband or I eating a big bowl of late night ice cream. Yes, it was more per pound than a larger container, but the actual cash outlay was much better.

I will be off work for the rest of the week, and should be able to write a bit more in-depth posts. I’m thinking about writing one about how we all judge one another’s food choices, whether it be too fancy, too packaged, too elaborate, too pretentious or just plain disgusting. Whether or not we admit to it, we all do it.

Keep up the challenge, folks, we’re already a quarter of the way through.

My budget for the week (with last weeks leftover) was $97. I spent $39+ @ Kroger on 2 pkgs. pop tarts, gal milk, 6 bagels, 2 Purex laundry soap (on sale for $2.99), qt. yogurt for starter, 2 noodle kits for kids lunches, 2# butter, red onion, hair conditioner, lg. choco milk powder, dog biscuits and something else?…. Then @ Produce Market, spent $9+ on 2 green tomatoes, one bunch green onions, 2 bell peppers and a bag of fresh peas :). This leaves me approximately, $47 for the week. Tonight is farmers’ market after work and with that much $$ in my pocket, I plan on either getting something to freeze or can depending on what’s available in bulk. If nothing in bulk, I’ll likely just get some greens and maybe the last of the strawberries – but if not to “put up”, then I’m pretty well set.

Katy,
I think it would be fun (and helpful) if you included a “money spent on groceries to date” in these posts, in addition to tracking weekly spending. Just a thought 🙂 I

Kim,

If you hover your mouse over the “June Food Stamp Challenge” on the top right hand side under my logo, a “page” containing that information will come up. It’s a couple days behind, as my work/family commitments have been heavy over the past few days. I’ll be updating it today.
