Life Lesson From a Sunburn

by Katy on May 2, 2010 · 5 comments

I’m here to tell a cautionary tale told through the power of a beet red sunburn.

This weekend marked the occasion of not one, but two soccer games for my 11-year-old son. Yesterday’s game required a fleece hat, a scarf, gloves, wool socks and a winter coat. All this, and I still seriously entertained fantasies of mugging the one dad who brought his own carafe of steaming hot coffee.

Today’s soccer game miraculously just required the coat. No hat, scarf, gloves or even wool socks! The coffee dad was safe and I even ended up with a bright and dramatic sunburn!

This is to demonstrate that however bleak and dismal life a day can seem, tomorrow is always a fresh start.

And I have the sunburn to prove it.

Whoa! I’ve seen a glow-in-the-dark sunburn on someone before but it’s been a few years. Ouch. Hope it heals soon! I guess it must be time to toss a tube of sunblock into your purse, huh?

I’m feeling the burn with you.

I coach a group with the middle school marching band. They had a parade Saturday which means lots of sun and horse poo. Between that (which I did get a bit red dispite tons of sunblock) and yesterday’s yard work (30 minutes, no sunblock…what was I thinking???) … I’m getting closer to looking like a taller, nicer Mr. Krabs.

I can’t wear sunblock. I turnred without any sun exposure! So it’s long sleeves, a bonnet, or a wide brimmed straw hat for me – the bonnet may not be your style, a little too Laura Ingalls, but it works. I haven’t had beyond a tinge of red on the nose for a few years now.

Word of caution to parents – your child’s bad sunburn tomorrow may be skin cancer, even malignant melanoma, in twenty years. I am a melanoma survivor, and was so surprised to learn that melanoma is related to old skin damage.

I’ve heard people say that once they ate a better diet (cut out sugar and trans fats and increased fruits and veggies and good fats), they didn’t burn as easily.
