Monday Giveaway — Hand Knit Dish Cloth

by Katy on August 2, 2010 · 33 comments

Today is week three in my weekly Monday giveaways, and today’s offering is a hand knit dish cloth. I’m sure there’s a better name for it, (and I know that the Japanese call them “Tawashis”) but I’m uncertain what that might be. This dish cloth is perfect for wiping down counters, children and wayward husbands. 😉 I have three of four of these, and they’re a great alternative to germy old sponges, not to mention a whole heck of a lot more attractive.

At this point you might be saying “Why Katy, I never knew you were such a talented knitter!” but you would be sadly ill informed. My sister Jessica is the crafty one in the family, (she gets all twitchy if she doesn’t have a project in hand.)

To enter to win, just write your name in the comments section below. I will randomly choose a winner at midnight on Wednesday, August 4th. U.S. residents only, please enter one time only.

Good luck!

Katy Wolk-Stanley

“Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without”

P.S. I think the dish cloth kind of looks like Oregon, which is cool.

I do not need the dishcloth but I just wanted to say that it looks great? Do you know if your sister used a pattern?

Another Katy in Portland. I love your blog and would really love this dishcloth. And it’s my birthday on the 15th 🙂

I had to post, but I don’t need another dish cloth, as I have tons of home made ones already. My grandmother made them for years, and though now Alzheimer’s’ has taken that away, I still use mine, and have about 3 dozen waiting for when my current 6 wear out. I hope to pass some of hers onto my daughter someday.

My sister in law and I have been saying we should start making them to keep up the tradition.

I have found that they do need a washing or 2 to become really absorbent, but we love them.

I don’t need to win this but wanted to share something similar that I crafted… a crocheted bath mat from leftover yarns. It’s great for stepping out onto and dries quickly too. Ours lives draped across the shower rod.

I fell in love with knitted and crocheted dishcloths when a family friend gave me some as a wedding gift. I’d love another one! These things are the best!

This is the Peaches & Creme Ballband knitted “warshrag”, made justifiably famous by Mason-Dixon Knitting. http://www.masondixonknitting.com/ I’ve made a bunch of them myself!

i’m just checking out your blog and i love that you encourage people with gifts that can help them make change in this consumeristic, disposable world we have to live in. yay!

Should have added: don’t put me in the drawing, Katy. I make dishrags (well, another pattern, but still…) all the time. Cute, cheery colors, though!

I like the colors. At first I thought you meant the colors were like Oregon!

I love using hand made dishclothes. I recently learned how to knit by making a few for myself! Thanks for the opportunity!

I usually like to sit back and watch others win, but I would love a hand-knitted dish cloth.

Thanks for the great blog and the give-aways.

This would be great! I’ve been looking for an alternative to run-of-the-mill synthetic sponges. Maybe something like this, maybe cellulose sponges. We’ll see.

My oldest daughter has been making these lately too (though your pattern is unique). Could you pass along the instructions in a future column? I could get her to whip one up for me for a Christmas gift.

The instructions are on the ballband for Elmore-Pisgah Peaches & Creme kitchen cotton yarn. From their website you can find directions: http://www.elmore-pisgah.com/ballband%20dish%20cloth.txt. Naturally the pattern works with any “kitchen” cotton of worsted or near-worsted weight. I hope you and your daughter enjoy your dishcloths!

P.S. If you want to see a picture of a finished cloth from the E.P. site, click http://www.elmore-pisgah.com/freeknitbath.htm.

Cute! Hate sponges–but I do have one & send it through the dishwasher every time I run it.
