Non-Consumer Mish-Mash — Free Prints, Tiny Apartments & Taco Based Currency

Book Nook

It’s time again again for Non-Consumer Mish-Mash, where I write a little bit about this and a little bit about that.

Free Photo Collage at Walgreens

I’m always happy when I find a national deal to share with my readers, and here’s one of my favorites. Walgreen’s does a free 8X10 Collage Print (Normally around $4.50) a couple times per year, and I almost always take advantage of it as it makes an awesome grandparent or father’s day gift. Not to mention that it’s kind of fun to put together and to choose the photos.

I already made mine and placed my order, I’m just waiting for the e-mail from Walgreen’s saying it’s ready to pick up.

Here’s the link, and the code is COLLAGE4FREE.

Coolest Tiny Apartment Ever!

You might be tired of me sharing all the clever and inspirational small living homes across the world, but today’s one takes the cake. Why? Two words:

Book. Nook.

This New York 240 square foot apartment is featured on Design Milk, and is everything my heart desires. Because apparently all I desire is a tiny space filled with books.

Seriously, that’s all I need.

Money Seen in Units of Tacos

My friend, Max Wong has written a great piece for Wise Bread where she tells the story of bringing a huge amount of clothing to a consignment store, only to be rewarded with $2.18 in cash. At first she’s annoyed with the small amount of reward for her efforts, but the cashier’s remark that “Well, that’ll buy you a taco” changed her mindset.

She writes:

“I think the reason why I was so taken by the Taco as monetary unit is because it legitimized the value of the $2.18 I had received in exchange for a shirt. I was annoyed that I’d driven down to the consignment store only to return home $2.18 richer. However, because I love tacos, the idea that I could get a quickie snack in exchange for a shirt I no longer liked took the sting from the original cash transaction.”

It’s a great article, and nicely thought provoking.

Have a great Sunday, the sun has come out here in Portland, and since half my family is in Seattle I have nothing I actually need to do. I think I’ll have a second cup of tea and ponder all the possibilities.

I think I would exchange a shirt for a taco. I also love the book nook!

I have so few shirts, that the swap would not make sense for me. However, I’d totally trade a mate-less sock for a taco.

An actual book nook. So lovely. ^___^ The bookworm in me squeed at the idea.

I always get so jealous of lofts, because we have 8 foot ceilings in our home. Kind of makes lofts out of the question.

I love all the tiny houses. And I recently did my annual clothes swap of thriftstore items I was ready to turn around. I did better, 80 bucks for a small backpack full of clothes that originally only cost 1-4 dollars apiece. I probably made 30 bucks in the deal and walked instead of driving so no gas costs added. And since I’ve been wanting to add a few dresses to my wardrobe I now have the funds to do so. I already found a light weight longsleeve cotton button down shirt I had wanted two years ago but didn’t want to pay 80 bucks for. $3 is a deal and I will wear it in the summer instead of sticky icky sunscreen lotions. If everyone quit buying expensive clothes and donating them unworn to thrift stores I guess I would have to learn to sew better though.

I became frustrated with the amount of money I used to get at our consignment store until I realized just how cheaply the items sold for. Case in point I found a cashmere sweater (adult sized) in perfect condition for $2. Can’t beat that and it’s the second most expensive item I’ve purchased there, the other being a dress for my son’s wedding I paid $12 for.

Please, don’t stop sharing tiny spaces I love the ideas I get from them to utilize in my tiny apartment.

Definitely not tired of tiny space ideas!

Also, I love the idea of being paid in tacos, or any food really. Yum. The dilemma sounds familiar. My mother tends to get insulted when our local shop either a. declines an item of her clothing or b. offers her less than she thinks it is worth. It’s almost humorous how personally she takes it. But as Lois points out, when their prices are cheap, what can you expect?

Love the book nook too!
And loved running into you today at New Seasons! When I first saw you, I knew I recognized you from somewhere and then 10 seconds later I realized who you were, and I really really wanted to say hi because I very much enjoy your blog, your style, and your sense of humor. I hope you don’t feel your privacy was invaded by me coming up to say hi. Keep up the wonderful work you do!! Thanks!

No problem at all, and it was nice to meet you! My sons always always think it’s hilarious when I get recognized.

Katy, I totally used the free collage coupon to make a housewarming gift for my friend’s new apartment! So cute, I think I need one for myself too. If anyone wants to see how it turns out (and if it lets me post the link): http://24.media.tumblr.com/6e2bbf0964124f97e964cc9c9c9f90a0/tumblr_mjtxwgEdSA1qer6x2o1_500.jpg

It almost seems like trick photography with that “tiny” apartment–it seems a lot bigger than 240 square feet. I love every inch of it! Not tired at all of the tiny space features–keep ’em coming!

You’re welcome! Mine turned out soooo cute, and I’d share it on the blog, except that it’s for my mother.
