Non-Consumer Mish-Mash — Small Business Saturday & Unwelcome Blog Shenanigans

by Katy on November 25, 2013 · 14 comments

It’s time again for Non-Consumer Mish-Mash, where I write a little bit about this and a little bit about that.

Register Your American Express Card Now for Small Business Saturday!

If you have an American Express card, (I do, it’s linked to my Costco membership, and I get cash back every year!) you need to register it for their Small Business Saturday program. It’s very simple. They will reimburse $10 back to your card when you A) register your card, and then B) shop at registered small businesses on Saturday, November 30th. (However, they will only register a certain number of cards, so do this now!)

There’s nothing extra you need to do while shopping.

Last year I bought a gift certificate at the neighborhood art supply store where my son works, and 100% of it went to the business, and my son even got to use his employee discount!

There are zillions of participating businesses, which can be found here!

It’s free money that encourages Americans to step away from the mall and support their locally owned businesses!

So yeah, I like this program. (However, if you’re doing any big box shopping this holiday season, make sure to register for eBates to get cash back. Not shopping? You can still book your travel this way.)

Instagram Goodness and Backend Blog Shenanigans

You may have noticed that my blog has been less active than usual, and for that I apologize. I have been have frustrated beyond belief with all the programming kinks that the blog has been experiencing, which include:

  1. Comments timing out.
  2. Blog not showing up on blog readers.
  3. Graphics not displaying correctly.
  4. Probably some other stuff.

I am a wiz at writing the blog, I am whatever the opposite of “wiz” is when it comes to computer coding. I will get this figured out, but in the meantime please keep visiting the blog and commenting. I promise you it’s getting through!

Here’s a little slice-of-life photo collage from my Instagram account to make up for everything.

My friend Matt Franklin does web design and could help you out. I’m sure his rates are reasonable and his place is a sustainability demonstration project, so anything you do pay him would go to a good cause. And you could write a blog post about your trip over there!

Thanks for the tip on the AmEx card. I just registered mine and there are several small business in my area that qualify. I did have trouble getting the list of businesses to come up in I.E. but it worked just fine in Chrome if anyone else is having trouble with it.

I have been getting the time out message when I leave a comment but finally discovered that the leaving of a comment is successful, despite the message (but it is slow). Good luck, your perseverence will get you through.

I was wondering why there would be a post on the FB page, but not in my reader! YAY! Thought I was losing it…

As for “4. Probably other stuff”

I’ve noticed I stopped receiving the emails with links to new blog posts. So I tried to register again, and it said my email was already signed up. After a few days, I did get an email but it had about 3 posts instead of just one. I’ll keep checking your site because I don’t want to miss anything and hopefully the email thing will work itself out…

I’m not receiving emails with new posts either. They seem to be coming about once a week now with a bunch of posts in one email. I hope that’s fixed soon.

Well, this is a relief, ‘cuz I, too, thought I was losing it. I’m not getting any blog posts at all (reader or email). I’m getting comments in my reader. Glad it’s not just me!

Hi, Katy,
I was just wondering if you gave out the books? I’ve looked several times and never saw a name. I didn’t expect to win, but to think about seeing my name is a tad bit thrilling. (Yes, i am that person!) I had issues with your site that day. As with Lilypad, i didn’t get some of your last posts, so i keep checking back.
Thanks; good lick with the glitches!

Debbie,

I did choose a winner, so congratulations to Jennifer M. whose comment was randomly chosen to win the four Homemade Living books.

YES! I found you again! You’ve not popped up in my feed reader for AGES – or at least two weeks. So tonight I deleted the feed and came here to re-add it, just to make sure it was working. So I’m bummed you’ve been having blog problems, but it was an unexpected FEAST!! to find several posts I’d not yet read. Here’s to a quick, effective blog fix, and HAPPY THANKSGIVING! (with NO shopping!)

My reader has been delivering your posts in batches of 5 all at once. I was vaguely bemused by your posting schedule until I read this. Does reading the feed to the reader fix the problem? I’ve tried to submit this a couple times sorry if it shows up more than once.
