Non-Consumer Photo Essay — Banks, Banks & More Banks!

by Katy on April 11, 2013 · 13 comments

It’s time again for another Non-Consumer Photo Essay, where like Being John Malkovich, you get to see what I see.

Like this antique mirror, which recently enjoyed a golf-leaf pen makeover. (Like a spa treatment for crappy old mirrors!)

Remember these targeted savings banks?

Collage-of-banks

Well, they are never-freaking-ending! And apparently they’re a very easy donation decision because almost every Goodwill I walk into has one or two. I do love the new addition to the retirement fund posse, although it’s probably a good idea to start saving for retirement before you lose all your hair.

Poor guy, he looks like he’s fallen on hard times, as evidenced by the poorly sewn patch on his jacket.

Savings Banks

I am really craving a bigger and more interesting chandelier for my dining room, and I keep going back to this painted goodie from Little Green Notebook. The Portland Habitat ReStore has moved locations, which is good for them but crappy for me, as it’s no longer anywhere near my loop of errands.

However, I may have to make an exception to my batch my errands rule.

Little Green Notebook

Not a lot of photos today for my photo essay. I guess I need to get out of the house more often.

We have a penny jar in our house…it gets cashed in once in a while and last time there was £35! in it. It got spent on a nice lunch out, some yarn and a trip to the pictures. I don’t think we need one to tell what to spend it on thank you…some decisions I like to make myself 😉

Chandlers are hard to come by now. A lot of modern and we haven’t had any at work lately either. It’s all modern. My husband broke the kitchen table one and I finally got a sort of French country one. The flour sent lights in the kitchen have finally given up. New ones now are 100-200 dollars. No replacement parts. We paid twenty dollars twenty years ago. LOL. Well have to do some serious smoothing this weekend. Cooking on the dark is a challenge!

I wonder if you could make some lamps out of some of those banks or glue some together and use them in the garden as decoration.

So…the Nonconsumer Advocate is about constantly shopping and spending as long as it’s used? makes sense.

The Non-Consumer Advocate is about finding alternatives to the traditional American made-in-China/Wal-Mart culture.

If you don’t like the blog, no one is forcing you to read it.

I’m also not happy with the ReStore move. I visited the new location last week (like you, no longer in my errand loop). The space is smaller, inventory is less, and they seem to be getting newer material that doesn’t mate well with my old home.

Hopefully it ends up being a good thing for them, but I thought the old location was great (and had excellent donations).

That mirror is divine…send it to me, please! You did a fabulous job with the gold leaf.

Thanks. The gold leaf pen makes it as easy as coloring in a coloring book! And the mirror was just something that’s been in our bedroom and I *borrowed* from my mother.

I would love to try making a chandelier out of old canning jars, esp the blue and pink (rare) ones!

Deffinitely not formal, but very me!

I love the blue chandelier!!! But…

After I saw this on LGN I bought a brass one myself off craigslist and spraypainted it. It was gorgeous! But when the electrician came to install it, he informed me it was against our codes in Arlington, VA. What?!?!

Luckily, he was sweet and did it anyway. Thanks, government, for nosing your way into my up-cycled living room.
