Non-Consumer Photo Essay — Windows, Winter Laundry & A Wonderful Chair

by Katy on January 20, 2014 · 12 comments

It’s time for another Non-Consumer Photo Essay, because my Instagram account is chock full of non-consumer-y goodness.

Like this photo of a chair I picked up yesterday on my way home from picking up groceries. It turns out that it’s George Nelson for Herman Miller and they sell for $1000 apiece on eBay. Can I get a what-what?!

My original plan had been to reupholster it, but now I’m going to just clean the original fabric.

My neighbors are having their basement remodeled, and this window and framing was very tempting. I held off though, as one of the windows was cracked. It would look super cute cleaned and hung in the backyard, or with the glass panels replaced with mirror.

Oh . . . the possibilities!

I am forever grateful that the New Seasons Market takes plastics recycling, and that this store is walking distance from my house.

Win-win!

Although I do use my electric dryer during the winter months, I still dry all lightweight clothing on a rack over a heating grate. And since my house is all soccer all the time, this is a significant portion of our laundry.

I am super jazzed to have a new potentially profitable project to work on!

I’m watching & waiting for w window. I plan to replace the glass w/ mirror, mount it on my backyard fence and put a flower box beneath it.

I’m so impressed with your eye for valuable cast offs. What kind of shape is the chair in?

The chair is very sturdy and the wood in in great although grubby condition. The fabric is dirty but intact, so my first choice is to clean rather than replace the fabric.

Hi Katy,

I am curious what New Seasons does with their plastic recycling. I have been disheartened about plastic recycling since reading this article:

I know that they take it to Far West Fibers:

My husband took an old window from his parents old home place and painted it a color I selected and then I bought coreboard and covered it with a neat fabric that co-ordinates with our living room and added old family photos to each of the six panels and then inserted those behind the glass. It is hanging above our living room sofa. We enjoy the family pictures and the fact that the “window frame” is from the family and that we could recycle it.

That sounds great! Years ago my husband took an old window and added mirror to the panels and crown molding. I love it!

Lately I’ve been throwing my clothes in the dryer for about 10-15 minutes, then taking them out right away and hanging them up. I only run the dryer for a little bit, but it helps the drying process get started. Usually it takes forever to dry clothes because we keep the house around 63* in the winter!
I still dry my husband’s undershirts and our underwear in the dryer though, because his shirts need to shrink back down in the dryer and life’s just too short to hang a bunch of socks and underwear. At least in my opinion!

How did you find out that the chair was a special chair, with a name, to look up on ebay? I’d call it a wooden upholstered chair and sell it way too cheaply on Craigslist!

I posted a picture of the chair in Instagram, and someone identified it. I mostly follow midcentury resellers on Instagram as a method of honing my eye, and many people follow me back.
