Simple Pleasures

What makes you happy?

Is it the gleam of your shiny new car? Or maybe an exotic tropical beach or Disney vacation?

Is it necessary to spend a ton of money in order to have pleasurable experiences?

I say no.

I am currently laying on my vintage couch ($125, which included delivery!). My sons are both at their soccer games, my house guests are off sightseeing, and a warm breeze is wafting through the living room curtains. ($1.50 per panel at a garage sale.) The laundry is flapping on the clothesline and I have an enormous turkey defrosting in the bathtub. No stress. No worry.

Life is good.

No. I take that back — life is great!

I don’t need expensive meals, first-run movies, consumer goods and expensive experiences.

All I need is a sunny day, a comfortable couch, occasional good company and some strong clothespins.

Go ahead and work full-time for your fancy tastes.

Me? I’m keeping it simple.

I indulged in one of my most favourite pleasures yesterday evening. There was an autumn chill in the air, the full moon was rising, so I lit a fire and a couple of candles and spent an hour watching the moon and the flickering flames.
Totally awesome and didn’t cost a penny. I loved having that space to myself while my daughter was in bed and hubby was working upstairs on the computer……….

My favorite thing lately is hanging out laundry on the drying racks on the patio. It’s meditative.

Great post. I personally need to work full time at the moment (need to save house deposit etc) but soon hopefully I’ll be living the simple life too. Thanks for the reminder of what I’m working towards as sometimes its difficult to stay focused and ignore all the adverts, consumer instilled wants etc.

My current favourite simple pleasure is opening all the windows in the house first thing in the morning to let in all the beautiful fresh spring air.

Beautiful Katy, as usual your writing gives me pause for thought. I spent time today thinking of the simple pleasures that I love and the list is so long it’s amazing.
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your blogs, your intelligence and vision.
