Stop Buying New Stuff — A Podcast Interview With The Dudes From “How To Money”

by Katy on March 29, 2019 · 15 comments

As The Non-Consumer Advocate I’ve been extolling the virtues on buying used instead of new since 2008, and during that time I’ve given countless interviews. Radio, television, print and online media, I’ve done them all.

I recently recorded a piece about non-consumerism for the podcast How To Money, which was a first for me. I love podcasts and have a array of different ones that plop into my inbox on a regular basis, and How To Money is one of my favorites. (You may remember me mentioning it as Pour Not Poor. Clever as a written title, confusing as a spoken title.) Although I’m not part of their craft beer drinking demographic, I more than make up for it with my deep fascination with all things personal finance.

Thank you to Matt and Joel for inviting me on as one of your $Pros!

Hi Katy Great podcast!! But I wish you were not on the other side of the country! I would love to give you a more efficient tv. My husband picks up flat screen tvs ALL THE TIME from the side of the road. Many times people even leave the remote. He finds there is a screen adapter plug which disconnects and usually it is a 5 minute fix to get them working agin. He has fixed countless tvs this way. Some appear less than a year old. If they arent easily fixed, he takes them to out local recycling center to insure they are recycled correctly. We have donated them to our sons school and the church.

An awesome way to spend part of a Saturday morning by listening to your podcast. Your input: intelligent, concise, thought provoking, articulate. I would have liked an extended interview format versus a short statement by you but the gentlemen did a nice job extending & applying your concepts. Awesome synopsis of many NCA tenants. Thank you for posting this.

It was wonderful to listen to you on the podcast. It thought the hosts did a decent job of extending your talking points. Go Katy!!!

Katy, I enjoyed your podcast. Evidently my dogs find the sound of your voice soothing. They are out cold.

Am I the only one who laughed that Katy was followed by a commercial for stuff to keep your beers cold? That seemed like a poor choice of placement on their part!

Katie, I enjoyed the podcast. My only criticism is that five minutes is not near enough time for you to share your knowledge and experience!

Franc, like many alternatively-consuming persons such as Katy and other NCA’s, is an interesting portrait of what non-consuming looks like, 40 years in… Franc is my friend. I wrote this a year ago but maybe some new people would like to read it.

Thank you for participating in that show and spreading the idea of non-consumerism and not-buying-new as a choice! I loved buying used before I was introduced to your site but it challenges me to put more effort into making it do, wearing it out, using it up and doing without!

Like you said, not triggering the manufacturing of more stuff.

I am really impressed you’ve been only buying used for 12 years now! Kudos!
