Striking Gold at Goodwill

The following is a previously published post. Enjoy!

My sister and her family are in town right now, which of course necessitated a trip to Goodwill. I did my usual sweep through the store, and then just followed my sister around, chatting and glancing down at the shelves. And then suddenly, there it was. Shining its golden surface up at me like a forgotten bottle of whiskey floating in Charlie Sheen’s toilet tank.

The bottom half of a Swiss Gold reusable coffee filter.

Let me start from the beginning. My husband is a coffee drinker, and has been using the same Swiss Gold coffee filter over the past ten years or so. These 23 Karat gold individual filters normally cost $19, so it was a big decision to buy one at the time. We’ve been hesitant to buy another one, so subsequently we baby the one we have. Unfortunately, daily use has taken its toll, and the coffee is not as beautifully filtered as it once was. And ironically, I was just waxing poetic about how I once found one a garage sale for 50¢, which I then gave to my father.

And here’s the best part. I only needed the bottom piece to the filter, and that’s exactly what was sitting on the Goodwill shelf.

I love Goodwill, and I will try to remember this purchase, as I try to hold back from going too often in an attempt to avoid recluttering my house. Such a perfect purchase! Not clutter at all!

Ahh . . . .

Hello, lover.

Can you tell which filter is the new one?

The gold filter was a great find. Shopping at a thrift store is truly a treasure hunt. Sometimes you discover something wonderful buried amongst the rubble. I stopped today at my local Goodwill and found a huge, vintage Mason Cash mixing bowl. Eureka!

Awesome find! I love when you can get exactly what you need/want at a thrift store 🙂

I find that if I can hold out long enough I can usually get what I need at Goodwill- including enough fabric ( and in the color I wanted!) for drapes for my bedroom. No small feat since they are over even a standard long length. It is a treasure hunt.

Recently I have mentioned for the frequent family gatherings I host I sure could do with a larger cup (35) coffee percolator.
There are two showers being hosted this spring by my family. Plus I have children who are now in the ” marrying” age.
I found a never used coffee percolator at the thrift shop last week. Exactly what I wanted.
One of my frugal children asked if I could possibly look for another for hot water at gatherings. Sometimes I have seen larger items like this at church rummage sales.
Don’t know if I’ll ever find one in such mint condition.

Wowza, what a great find! I’ve been better about trolling my local thrift store. I tend to look for fabric for sewing–you can find a lot of things!

Everything I mean everything I own in my house including clothes came from thrift shops. People who come into my home always makes comments how nice my house is.

I find that the other end of this, though, is I see something and think, “oh I could totally use that!” and then my home fills with things that I don’t really need. It’s best if I keep a running list of things I actually do need and then don’t buy outside of that unless absolutely necessary!

My favorite thrift-store finds are the popular-brand swaddle blankets and winter jacket that I found at the Goodwill Outlet and the knee-length denim skirt I found at the regular Goodwill.

Talk about deals, last night found a pair of True Religion jeans, brand new, cost me $8. I have found so many bargains at Goodwill it’s unbelievable. The thing with Goodwill is you can’t go in looking for something specific. You just need to be in the mood to go shopping and dig through the racks. Definitely worth it.

Unbelievable.. uuaahh! Well, that my dearest, is why we use a Chemex coffee maker 😉 You simply replace the filter whenever you brew your coffee. And you can reheat it as well…
Anyways! What about those adorable squirrel shoes? I couldn’t find anything..
