The Non-Consumer Advocate in The National Enquirer

by Katy on March 3, 2010 · 23 comments

When I started The Non-Consumer Advocate in 2008, I only had a fuzzy view of what my goals would be. Sure, I wanted to write about frugality and The Compact, but the long term vision was murky at best.
But all of of that has changed, because I have now met the goal of my wildest fantasies. Because I can now refer to myself as:
“Katy Wolk-Stanley, of The Non-Consumer Advocate, as seen in The National Enquirer!”
No. I have not gestated any offspring for John Edwards, nor did I go dumpster diving with the Octomom. Sadly, all I did was issue The No Heat Challenge, (which actually ended on November 1st.)
So I guess it’s only downhill from here, because I have reached the pinnacle of awesome. National Enquirer style.

P.S. Sorry about the hinky formatting. I am once again reminded that I’m a great frugalista, an okay writer and one heck of a crappy computer person.

LOL! I love this. Having never bought a National Enquirer, I had no idea they even did normal articles like this.

Do you just want the space at the bottom of this post gone? If you do, you can probably fix that by editing it in the html mode…there’s probably some funky leftover bit of code in there or maybe some extra spaces (for some reason, it seems to be hard to get rid of those unless you’re in the html mode).

Signed,
your personal computer assistant, aka Kristen

Rebecca,

I didn’t write the article. Sadly, it’s just an interview that I gave.

Still funny though. 🙂

Wow! That is very cool. I’m tired of high heating bills too, so I shut off my heater about a week and a half ago. I live in Charleston, South Carolina, so the cold weather is considerably milder than many other places, and my apartment naturally stays at 65-69 degrees or so. It still feels chilly for this southern girl, but it’s been neat to see how my body is adapting to it and how I’m noticing it less and less. I’ve been staying warm by dressing in layers. Around the house, I wear a tank top, thin long-sleeved tee and a sweatshirt and the combination is cozy and non-bulky. For pants I wear long underwear under my sweats. I keep my feet warm with thick socks and slippers. The total effect is quite comfortable. I also light candles around the house for a little added warmth. I can’t wait to see my cheaper electric bill!

I’ve been keeping my house at 63º while hubby is at work during the day and at 65 when he is home for a few hours in the evening and on weekends. At night the thermostat is told to not come on unless it goes below about 55º and it DOESN’T come on until I ask it to go back to 63º. My bill came the other day and I was bitterly disappointed to find my usage almost equal to the super hot summer month of August. How? This house is very well insulated and cracks are sealed! I don’t get it.

Moral: don’t count on seeing a big drop in your bill.

Rates have gone up almost everywhere. Is that the reason? If so, imagine what the bill would have looked like if you hadn’t turned back the thermostat!

Actually, at the moment the rates are what they were 20 years ago! But the company is asking for what I have to admit is a well-justified rate hike. I don’t know what I’m going to do then!

Well, this should increase your readership, though your new follwers may be disapponted in the utter lack of celebrity gossip and alien-related content. (What? No six headed babies?? I’m outta here…)

Katy, this is so funny to be mentioned in such an august publication. It might be worth buying this issue even–and then I can also check on whether anyone’s lamp has mysteriously been serenading them with Love Me Tender every night, and whether anyone has recently found the face of Newt Gingrich in their baloney sandwich. You can’t top the N E!

At least you didn’t make it in because you were flaunting your cellulite 😉 lol

Congrats! The National Enquirer has been more accurate than any traditional media lately, so you have definitely made it to the big time!

Excellent!

For the record, I think you’re a much better than “okay” writer. Your content is great, but the writing is awesome!

I am so relieved for you, Katy. When I saw the picture I thought that maybe you made news in the Enquirer because of your famous cellulite. It’s so much better to be “No Heat Challenge” girl! Thanks for giving me a laugh.

There goes my theory that the rags like the Enquirer actually write true stories so the Men In Black know where to find the aliens. I’m so disappointed, lol!

Wow! They have a big readership, and if some readers seek out your blog, you may very well impact many more lives with your funny and thought provoking prose. I know I look forward to it every day.

Well, as the evangelists say, Witness where you are! I would have been a litle embarrassed to be in the cellulite issue, but that extra padding can keep you warm, right?

Katy! Congrats! I wear fingerless gloves and a hat and four top layers and three bottom layers most of the time during the winter here in Richmond. I’m all about the fleece and blanket deal. Thanks for reminding us there are all sorts of ways to save!

I keep telling myself that I should have my husband take a “No Heat Challenge” theme photo that can run with all these articles.

Sadly, my name but not my photo got to be included.

so i stopped in the supermarket checkout line to find this article and some guy said to me, “are you really interested in celebrity cellulite?” so i told him i was looking for the no heat challenge article, which of course, sounded like a total lie. he had no idea what that was and i had to almost pull out an informative presentation card to let him know about saving energy. im sure that is not what he was expecting at all. lol.
