Thrift Store Banking for Targeted Savings

by Katy on November 5, 2012 · 12 comments

Do you have a hard time putting money aside? Would it help if your savings habits were tied to specific goals?

Well then, perhaps these thrift store banks can help!

Need the funds for a drunken girls night out?

Or maybe you’re happy just sitting alone at home with a bottle (or two) of wine?

Then again, you need to be saving for the long term goals such as retirement. Sexy old lady style.

Or even retire happy hobo style?

Whatever your savings style, just make sure to put aside your pennies, and maybe even a dollar or two.

How fun! We used to put our spare change in a coffee can, with a slot cut in the lid. We really should start doing that again, actually…

I have a black and white spotty piggy bank (a pig) that I got from a charity shop a couple of years back. The purchase was inspired by your alter-ego Coingirl! I decided every penny/pound found lying around would be popped in, and then each November the money is donated by the Kids through their school to Children in Need (BBC Fundraiser each year)…

I never seem to have spare change since I rarely spend. But, today I am buying a gift card for lessons at Ballet Austin for my dancer’s birthday. However, I am purchasing it online, so no spare change from it.

A little off-topic: I cleaned the inside of my car and found 22 cents. I thought of you, Katy.

It is rather amazing how many of those items show up in the thrift stores. Who ever buys them in the first place?

Thank you for a lovely distraction from all the election coverage.

In the last few weeks I have found a nickel and three pennies while out walking. But I spent them along with some other loose change in my pocket to buy a dozen eggs to bake bread last night. Perhaps I need to designate a savings container to put my found moneys in. I like the Hobo guy. He inspires me.

My husband collects non-mechanical (still) banks, so a few years ago I bought the granny and grampa retirement fund banks as a joke. We put our spare change in an old fashioned glass milk or cream bottle.

I vote for the hobo jar, please. I think I’d make a good hobo. 🙂

I literally TODAY stopped at a thrift store and found a small ceramic bank in a tasteful sage green color with lettering “Vacation Fund!” I bought it for $2.99 to save my $5 bills for a trip I’m planning this spring. I feel completely in tune with The Non-Consumer Advocate today!

Since I got married on 10-11-12, my husband and I have found a quarter, a dime and two pennies. Our financial future looks bright, indeed!

I have started grocery shopping and meal planning based on what’s on sale…a tip IbelieveI picked up here.

Thanks Katy
