Today I . . .

Today I . . .

  • Woke up in New York City.
  • Ate brunch at Coppella at 14th Street and 7th Avenue with my mother and a publishing friend/contact.
  • Walked over to the Highline, where I met Gianluca Vassallo from FreePortrait.org. He and I had a wonderful conversation about the connection between consumerism and freedom. I took this photo of him:

FreePortrait.org

And he took this photo of me:

  • Wandered around lower Manhattan people watching and photographing architecture.

Like so:

NYC Building - 7th Avenue

  • Treated the Marimekko store like a museum. (Slowly browsing, taking pictures and ignoring the gift shop.) I did make them look at  pictures of my Marimekko lampshade. Like they had a choice.

Marimekko remnants

  • Met up with my sister and niece at the Jonathan Adler store in the West Village.

Breakfast at Adler's

  • Wandered around the village for awhile until taking the subway back up to Washington Heights, where we ate deeply delicious Bar Mitzvah leftovers.

Hijinks ensued:

  • Took the subway elevator with a family of Comic-Con attendees, including this super fun mom. I told her that “My shoes are super comfortable.” (It’s my super power.)

Super mom

  • Am relieved that I was able to get through my aliyah at yesterday’s Bar Mitzvah without flubbing the Hebrew or forgetting the tune.

Now your turn. What did you do today?

meal planned

bought only tiny amounts of what i need at the co-op and everything else i needed on sale.

bought week + of groceries at trader joe’s.

bought this week’s fruit/veg at farmer’s market.

that’s a lot of buying, but it will save anyone in my family from buying a single thing to eat out this week.

read a lesson about starting a business from a course a friend loaned me.

meditated.

taught a yoga class.

enjoyed veggie stir fry made by my hubs.

going to read a library book before bed.

We went to a potluck brunch for our book club and spent about three minutes discussing said book (turns out, everyone had either read just a couple of chapters or none at all — easy discussion! ;)) before spending three hours catching up on old times. Then DH and I went to pick up our Halloween pumpkins — a favorite tradition! But nowhere in our travels did we meet anyone with superpowers. 😉

Katy – that is the most soulful, beautiful photo of you!
Today I’ve washed and hung two loads of washing, made carrot soup which included leeks I dug out of our garden, turned over new garden beds in anticipation of getting some vegies in soon (I’m in Tasmania!), did a little work (self-employed), washed last night’s dishes including several pots, baked two trays of cookies, renewed library books online…
it’s nearly 1pm here, so I’m feeling on track and in control of today’s chores!

It’s been fun watching your trip unfold on Instagram. I agree, the portrait is absolutely lovely.

I think I may be due for an Instagram intervention.

Yours is way more exciting.

I was awakened at 5:30 ish by the sound of keys falling off my bed . Maybe it was a ghost, because I saw no keys only my 5 year old in bed with us. He does however love keys so they could be his under the bed somewhere.
I taped off and painted a pair of leggings for my 11 year old for her Vanellope costume. I had acrylic paint already and even found the fabric medium to make it fabric paint-ish. I then made a bunch of candy pieces from paper clay, which will get painted and glossed and stuck to bobby pins.
Then I cleaned the kitchen, doing what my husband was supposed to do, since it was his mess. Sent kids to Hebrew school for two hours and tackled part of the garage. Came in, put away laundry. Made kids lunch. Made a shopping list for husband and five year old who went to a science fun thing at the library with the slug queen. Spent two hours doing science homework with my 11 year old. More dishes. More laundry. Made dinner. Cleaned up. More laundry. Now. I’m sitting in my bed watching Halloween wars waiting for drop dead diva.

Wow, you are on the ball for Halloween! Then again, I would expect no less.

I had to chuckle at the fact that you got all that Halloween prep done, and household chores, and your garage, AND got your kids off to Hebrew school. My son realized at 10:00 that I did NOT get him up for Hebrew school. (What he didn’t realize was that it was a conscious decision; after an exhausting day of my cousin’s bat mitzvah and the ensuing celebration, I decided we could all sleep in! And, Katy, that feeling of “Will I remember which tune to sing for the aliyah” must be universal. When someone said “Yasher Koach” I joked that it was because I’d remembered the Hebrew and the melody, not because I’d done something outstanding.)

What a great trip you’re having, love your portrait! Today I went with a friend to the home show in Daytona Beach to look at all the new stuff. She is remodeling her house. Since I’ll be moving soon, I looked at some beds (they have come a long way). Now they massage you and you can raise your feet and head up. Very fancy. Not sure what I’m going to go with yet, still shopping. Looking forward to a brand new bed though. Then we had lunch at a wonderful riverfront restaurant. My friend was kind enough to treat me since I am having a rough time emontionally right now. It was very sweet of her. Then took a scenic drive home. Got home, floated around in the pool for awhile while listening to NPR. Tonight it’s the Real Housewives of New Jersey reunion (my guilty pleasure) and of course, Drop Dead Diva. All in all, a great day.

Hmm . . . second mention of “Drop Dead Diva,” must be a worthwhile show.

Sorry to hear you’re having a rough time emotionally.

My daughter (age: almost 14)loves Drop Dead Diva. She was on a tear yesterday, and watched about 4 shows in a row on Netflix (no school due to Columbus Day).

Your portrait is incredible! Hope you have an extra frame at home to paint and frame it!
Today, I work for “The Man”. But I’ve planned it full of decluttering and organizing, so it’s all good.

I am enjoying your adventures!
Today I went to Bible study group, fixed the tv/dvd player there, met a friend for lunch, fixed beef vegie soup out of a terrible roast I had served yesterday (hope to save it), used the fireplace as it is truly cold here, am taking a break going through my supplies to see what I need, and generally straightening up the house after the weekend.

I spent half the day working and then went for a long walk in the gorgeous fall weather. The leaves are turning colors and it was simply too beautiful to stay inside.
In between, my day was filled with laundry and dishes. It is amazing how many dishes we create when we are all home for 3 days. Also helping kids with homework and “reminding” them to fold their laundry, clean their rooms, etc.
Then, I made a new recipe for dinner — and it was a disaster! It was so bad I literally had to throw it in the trash and boil water for pasta instead. Blech.
By the time that was all over, I was exhausted. I got in bed and read until my eyes were droopy.

Bummer, I think all cooking should end with a palatable meal. Then again, that may just be me. 😉

Katy –
Loved the portrait of you and hearing about your travels.

Today I made a new silver dollar pancake recipe for breakfast ( they were horrible) but ate what I could of them anyways. Worked. And started planning a 2 day trip to Charleston, SC with my husband who will be there for work. By your inspiration, I have looked into as many free things as I can do there. Can’t wait to see how many things I can find and do!

go and see the Hunley exhibit at the former navy base. I don’t remember paying to get in there but it was a couple of years ago. Also, take a boat ride over to Ft Sumter, not sure what the price is on this as it has been many years since I’ve been. Also for something free, walk around the battery in downtown charleston and look at all the beautiful architecture and you can sneak a peak into some of the beautiful gardens behind the homes. You could also pickup a picnic lunch and sit on a blanket at the park in the battery. Lots of good restaurants there, 82 Queen (I believe that’s the name) is fabulous. Order the shrimp and grits and sit outside in the patio area. This of course is a little pricey but well worth it. You could also share. I was stationed there in the navy and loved every minute of it. Have a great trip.
