Today I Am . . .

Today I am . . .

  • Drinking lots of tea and sneaking leftover rolls from last night’s Thanksgiving feast.
  • Letting the kids sleep in, although I’ll draw the line when the sun starts to go down.
  • Looking forward to tonight’s evening meal of leftover Thanksgiving food. (All the deliciousness without the frenzied cooking!)
  • Thinking about adding a few more items to my Etsy store. (I bought a new-in-box set of Dansk candles and glass candlesticks from 1967 at Goodwill last week!)
  • Washing up all the grease and cranberry stained table linens from last night’s meal.
  • Hoping that the weather forecasters are correct in predicting snow for the beginning of next week.
  • Proud of my younger son for assembling his grandmother’s brand new vacuum cleaner. All those years of following Lego instructions paid off after all!
  • Making sure to remember to go buy two free $10 gift certificates at our locally owned art supply store tomorrow on Small Business Saturday.
  • And of course, I am not doing any retail shopping, waiting in line for the privilege of shopping or getting into any fistfights for a plasma TV. (Although I might have elbowed someone to get my hands on that Dansk candlestick set. 😉 )

Now your turn. What are you doing today?

Love this post, Katy.

I’m enjoying a quiet and peaceful day too.
– slept late
– put away china and silver, wrapping the silver up in plastic wrap to prevent tarnish
– updating my online list of my bits and pieces of china. It helps me know what to look for at thrift stores to have a list of the pieces I already have.
– will cut Son #1’s hair.
– going with the family to see the new Hunger Games movie this afternoon.
– enjoyed a lunch of turkey & stuffing & relish.
– finding out what my local friends are doing today via Facebook.
– hanging out laundry in the cold sunlight.
– helping DH load the bins of leaves into the back of the van. He and the boys have been raking.
– petting cats and drinking coffee.
– rubbing peppermint oil & coconut oil on my chest to help with a mucous-y cough.

Have you tried inhaling steam with eucalyptus and sage oils? It helped me last I time I got sick. Hope you feel better soon.

Sounds like a great post-Thanksgiving day Katie. I’m planning on going for a walk, then working my way through the final season of “The Borgias”, from the library of course! I would have to make an exception on not shopping today, however, if vintage Dansk was involved!

Sounds like a lovely day!

I am…
*Resting on the couch trying to recover from this doozy of a cold that forced me to skip Thanksgiving yesterday (Ugh.).
*Rereading Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and wishing the farmer’s market hadn’t shut down for the year.
*Drinking lots of tea.
*Feeling extremely grateful that I no longer work in retail.

Loved that book! I could totally relate to the chapter on tomatoes.

My 4 y.o. nephew told me this summer as I was leaving, “Give me a hug! (big hug) Give me a kiss (big kiss) Be careful……….Take some tomatoes!” (:

We ate leftover rolls for breakfast. That and pumpkin pie. Hey, it covers all the food groups. Quiet here today
Cloudy and getting cold. We’ll take the dogs out for a walk later to work off the pie.
Happy no shopping day!!!

-Slept until I woke up naturally, no 6 a.m. alarm today, YAY!
-Had leisurely breakfast of eggs on english muffins and some raspberries with a bit of last night’s whipped cream.
-Took a long walk around Lower Manhattan, sat in Battery Park City and watched the Hudson River roll along. Love the sound of water lapping the shore.
-Had chicken pot a feu with some good baguette for lunch.
-Walked some more.
-Making latkes for dinner to go with leftover turkey, Happy Hanukkah!
-Will read the evening away while listening to some good Jazz.

The big project today is taking all the books and CDs and loads of random junk….(Not kidding, just the random junk is taking up most of a kingsize bed). Dusting all, organizing CDs in alphabetical order. Donating a ton of crap from said shelves including VHS tapes. Three hours in and taking a lunch break. My back hurts, my nose is irritated from the dust, but this was long overdue and will be great when it’s done. Yesterday, was the family room and 11 year old’s room.

Today I …
– worked with my 7-year-old DS on his laundry chores (I believe in training ’em young when it comes to laundry).
– took DS to the grocery store to return bottles and cans. Here in Michigan we pay a $.10 deposit on carbonated beverage containers. My kids do the returns to earn their spending money.
– got my bangs trimmed instead of a full haircut.
– made turkey mushroom barley soup from turkey-bone stock that simmered in the slow cooker overnight. I still have more bones in the refrigerator, so I think the next batch of stock will become a Mexican/Southwestern-inspired soup (black beans, tomatoes, taco seasoning, corn).

Today I am:
1) thoroughly cleaning the bedroom – what a mess!
2) jumping ahead to Small Business Sat. and buying tools and fabric at a local quilt store
3) working!
4) eating leftovers and watching a movie from the library.

Excited for dinner tomorrow!

I worked this morning at my part time job. I had to be there at 6 am to restock the shelves and met some women who came in for breakfast as their break from shopping. They started at midnight. Ugh!

Then I went home and did 3 loads of laundry and hung them to dry, ate my lunch and then started painting my living room. Half way done! I will finish the other half as soon as hubby installs the new radiators as the ones that are there are the originals from 1973. Unfortunately not worth keeping as they are very inefficient. I shall finish painting this weekend and then move to the kitchen.

Eating Thanksgiving leftovers is the best! I also took the kids swimming, had a chat with a friend, and caught up on laundry. And both kids have sleepovers tonight so tomorrow I’ll sleep in, and then read some more of my library book. I love buy nothing day!

Working at my bookstore. Where it was definitely Bleak Friday. Here’s hoping Small Business Saturday will be better.

Here’s something cool that local bookstores are doing here in Portland:

I just looked at the link, and it turns out that it’s a national program. (Local bookstores having authors at their stores today. And I see that Cheryl Strayed from “Wild” will be at two different stores, one walking distance from my house!)

Here in Canada we celebrate Thankgiving in October. We have never had a Black Friday until this year but I’m not really interested. We keep Christmas very low key so there are not many gifts given out. Of course we are still consumers in this house but not the extent of the average Canadian family.

Buying $10 gift certificates to our favorite restaurant around the corner, thanks to Katy’s recommendation.
Finishing the popcorn stringing for the beautiful tree I got off freecycle.
Doing my weekly cleaning in case I actually go into labor with my one-week overdue little man.
Shocking myself by actively hoping that I won’t have the baby this weekend. There is a free Thomas and Friends meet and greet tomorrow at the local pbs station. I know our 3 year old will love it. I might just go even if I am in labor.

Careful, second labors are a lot faster than first ones!

I think I had those exact candle holders in the 60’s. I might just have to look at your etsy store! Thanks for the memory.

Everywhere people were cooking so I had a go at gluten free stuffing. Subbed brown rice flour for wheat in the cornbread and it did fine and crumbled it together with mushrooms, onions, and celery, eggs, broth and spices. Topped it with gluten free gravy, browned butter and rice flour and added broth. The gravy was weird but tasted ok on top of dressing when heating it up. I may make this a regular menu item, nice break from so much rice.

Next time try a gluten-free flour blend. It makes it less gritty than all-rice flour. We mix up our own using Bob’s Red Mill GF flours: one bag each brown rice flour, white rice flour, tapioca flour/starch and potato starch (not potato flour). Then you can sub it 1-for-1 in any recipe that calls for all-purpose flour. The only trick is with baking because of the lack of gluten. But if you use eggs, that takes care of things sticking together. For years, people have recommended using xanthan gum. Since we’ve found we don’t like gums, we use 1 Tablespoon of potato FLOUR in place of 1 teaspoon of xanthan gum. Works great!
