Today I Am . . .

Today I am . . .

  • Putting my sore feet up after a weekend of work. I love being a nurse, but there’s a reason why nurses are obsessed with finding comfortable shoes. Ouch.
  • Annoyed that my house falls into a revolting state whenever I work a couple of days in a row.
  • Wishing I could have been awake during last night’s wind storm, as it was wild and exciting and it would’ve been fun to be part of the action.
  • Taking the kids to see The Lego Movie, as we have three free passes that my husband earned from participating in a study at work.
  • Happy that my kids are healthy, intellectually curious and wickedly funny.
  • Debating whether to make muffins, eggs and bacon or both.
  • Starting to get excited about flying out to Washington D.C. and New York City next month. And wondering if any readers would be interested in a meet up.

Now your turn. What are you doing today?

The windstorm was just a little too wild for my taste – it sounded like a freight train coming through our yard at times. And our neighbor’s roof blew off! Thankfully (if that can be said) it blew into another neighbor’s house and not ours. Our neighbors were able to get the roof repaired this morning.

P.S. We are the family that will be renting your mom’s cottage for a couple of months – it’s a great fit for us. And your mom is wonderful! We’re looking forward to our stay, and so glad I remembered reading about it here!

It was certainly very wild!

Have a great time at Lexi House, it’s my favorite!

Today I am:
Making blueberry muffins and homemade pretzels for snacks.
I sewed the underwire back into one of my bras.
I removed the shoelaces from a newer pair of snow boots to put back in my Sorel boots-purchased in 1993 for .49 at a thrift store. These boots are the bomb still!
I am hosting some family over the weekend, so I am working on a menu to keep the expenses in check.
Hope all have a great week-weather and all!

I love the idea of a Washington, DC meetup. That’s the city I call home!

Hey! A meetup might be fun! I will be in NYC March 21-23 and would love to hang out with you/others in the group. Hope something works out!

One had school, but took the 5 year old to see the Lego Movie. We have two malls and two theaters. One theater is newer and $7 for matinee. The other is older yet just fine and is $4 per person. Guess where we went? Of course, I made up the difference because Nate earned a treat for saving up good behavior marbles and that’s what he wanted. It was worth the $4.50….sort of. Plus, popcorn is his favorite food. Usually, I bring it, but they have been actually looking through people’s bags and I didn’t want to deal with it today. Got some groceries on the way home and will be cleaning up this afternoon. Again. Always.

Hi Katy!
Depending on your schedule, I’d love to meet up while you’re in Washington D.C.! I’m a volunteer docent at the Library of Congress, so I’d love to give you (and any other non-consumer advocates who’d like to join in) a tour (again schedule dependent).

If I can’t make it, please know that the Library of Congress Jefferson Building is one of the most beautiful buildings in Washington D.C. and you should definitely swing by. There are public tours Monday – Saturday (times listed on the website http://www.loc.gov), so even if I can’t make it there are lots of other great docents. Best part of the LoC tours? They’re FREE!

If you plan (which I know you will), you can figure out how to hit the Capitol Building tour, take the tunnel to the Library of Congress for a tour there or vice versa.

Hopefully winter will be done, finished, caput by the time you come to visit! Email me if you’d like to set up a tour of the Library of Congress.

I agree with you on the Library of Congress tour! It is awesome! I loved the Bob Hope room. I love libraries anyway, so it is a treat to go to the Library of Congress when in DC.

I’d be interested in an NYC meetup. I live in northern NJ, and it’s not too far of a trek by either car or transit. Keep us posted!

I’m in NYC (lots of travel away during March) and would be interested in a meet up as well.

Today I worked. Had a valentine dinner Saturday night where everyone brought something and we provided the stuff that needed to be “hot” – meat, rice medley’ 2 kinds of veggies and home-made rolls. Now we are enjoying our clean house (company motivates us to “get the lead out”) and great leftovers. Snowing like crazy here, so hunkering Dow for some reading (library books) and PBS ( antique roadshow). Enjoying a warmer house following an energy audit that revealed the need to re-insulate our attic….which we had done last week.

We went for a walk around the marina with our dog, got my husband’s weekly haircut while we were downtown, put prices on a bunch of cloth diapers we’re selling during our local cloth diaper yard sale, and watched Bones on Netflix. Soon we’ll do baths and dishes, and hopefully be in bed by a decent hour!

Today I worked 10 hours, made dinner, went to zumba and came home and worked another hour (I work from home on the computer). I’m loving the OT and will take as much as I can. The next 2 weeks I have 15 hrs of OT each week. After that, everyone gets a mandatory 10 (or should I say strongly suggested). I don’t mind because I have goal to payoff a loan 6 months earlier than planned, so I hope it works out.

And as I was sitting at my desk working and waiting for my computer slowness, I made up a dinner schedule for the week — well at least till Sunday. I’m very excited that I don’t really have to go anywhere over the weekend and hubby will have dinner duty! And I have all the ingredients!

Today I SHOULD have finished a paper due for school on Thursday, but instead dithered around reading a book, grocery shopping and making granola cups for kid lunches this week. Built a decent fire in the fireplace and watched the rain. Sometimes self-care means more than a great paper.

Today I:
-Worked 2 hours this morning at my sons school – the money goes towards his tuition.
– Had to drive an hour to my sons dr appt to find out that both his ear tubes are out, so no more driving to the ear dr for checkups from now on. Now let’s hope his ears stay clear so no more tubes.
– Did some mending on my daughters’ stuffed animal, sons winter coat and his school sweatshirt – which we got for free from the school uniform closet. When he outgrows it, it goes back to the closet for someone else to use.
– Was called a “freaking budgeting genius” by my hubby! I’ll take that compliment. A guy at his work, who together with his wife make 45K more than us, have 40K in cc debt, are living paycheck to paycheck and are stressed out and probably getting a divorce. We may not be living large but we are thankful to have no cc debt and no where near the stress this couple has.

Would love to meet up in DC next month! I live in Annapolis and used to work in DC. The National Portrait / American Art Museum has a great enclosed courtyard and your free to bring in your own lunch. Plus like most museums in DC it’s free admission. My teenage son loves it. Its right near Chinatown and a Metro stop.

Monday, Hubby had his second cataract surgery and I was his designated driver for the trip home. So, Tuesday, (today) in the morning someone will be coming by to install a replacement microwave to replace the one we bought which was apparently defective. Then in the afternoon I will take hubby to his appointment to have the eye patch removed. Just another day in paradise! Kidding, of course. I am feeling very blessed, really. Because of modern medicine, as we age we don’t have to fear going blind by cataracts like the generations before us may have.

Planning to make chili for dinner. I’ll make it this morning so I just need to reheat it at dinner time. I’m using kidney beans I cooked and froze a while ago.

Cleaning the house. With snow days on Thursday and Friday last week and then the weekend there is clutter and grunge.

I’m planning to make soup to use the bag of spinach that expires today. I’ll eat the soup for lunch this week. I’ll either make Red Lentil & Vegetable soup (a Good Housekeeping magazine recipe) or Gingered Lentil Soup with Brown Rice and Sweet Potatoes (also online).

I plan to go to Aldi as we are low on produce and they currently have good prices on pineapples, Gala apples, and onions, and we are almost out of bananas.

I will spend some time knitting a hat to be given to someone in need. I have been knitting through my yarn stash and have very little left.

Yes to the first two also! I just went back to weekend package so work 2-12’s with a 4.5 on Friday evening. My kitchen was spotless when I went to work Friday. By Sunday, I wondered why I bothered!

But today is Tuesday and the sun is shining and it’s 43* here in my corner of Iowa. I had opened windows for a bit, did some laundry and cuddled with my puppies 🙂 My son has swim lessons after school and we are heading to the library afterwards!

I made a batch fantastic GF waffles. I know this will save me a ton of time during the week. I live in DC and would be happy to share my frugal resources with you.

today I am:

thinking about a serious furniture rearrangement in the living room/play area (dining room). Still looking for that magical arrangement that will somehow hide the mess of a play area in open concept rooms. (I know there is no real solution with a 6 year old with too many toys except time.)

looking forward to tomorrow and my son’s 2 days off from school. Have some fun stuff planned.

celebrating that the maintenance (new struts) for my 2001 car was only 1/2 the cost I expected. I am good to go until brakes next year.
