Today I Am . . .

Today I am . . .

  • Making pies, cranberry sauce and picking up a few extra Thanksgiving necessities such as brussel sprouts. (We’ll be eating our Thanksgiving meal at my brother-in-law’s house on Thursday, but having my family over the next day.)
  • Making my sister happy by registering for HBO GO just so she can share our account. (HBO came free with our cable package.)
  • Making sure I take advantage of this Walgreens.com free 8 X 10 offer, and thinking that I’ll put together a cute collage through Ribbet.com.

  • Super annoyed that my plan to take the bus to work this Saturday is looking to be huge pain in the tuchus, as my nearby busses don’t run early enough to get me to work by 7:00 A.M. The public transit website is telling me to leave the house at 5:15 A.M. with a 40 minute wait downtown or to walk 24 minutes and then take a bus and then two different light rail lines. What?!
  • Thinking that families with one car have it tough and likely have just one adult who works outside the home.
  • Contacting any coworkers I can think of that live even remotely close to me.
  • Relieved that we got my older son’s glasses back to Costco to be fixed one day before the warranty ran out. Whew . . .
  • Enjoying that Portland is experiencing a pocket of somewhat balmy weather, and thinking I should take advantage of it to walk as many errands as possible today.
  • Starting to get used to my short hair.

Hair cut

  • Happy that I have a decently entertaining library audiobook to get me through an afternoon of cooking and cleaning.
  • Not planning to shop or non-shop this Black Friday. It’s just a regular day.
  • Hoping to be efficient enough with my time to carve out some time to read a library book that’s almost due back at the library.

Now your turn. What are you doing today?

I had a home health care worker visit this morning because my insurance pays for it. She stayed an hour and I learned a lot about health.
Also I am waiting for an electrician. I was using my hand mixer late last night when boom…the kitchen outlets all went out. Wouldn’t you believe before a holiday! At least I found a person to help.
I am polishing the silver and cleaning the china. I am hosting a dinner for my Mom and her friends tomorrow (they are all 95), so I figure they deserve the best.
I am also homebound. It’s cold, windy, and nasty outside, so I decided to go over Christmas decorations to see what I need. Probably not much as I bought so many things on sale last year.
Happy Thanksgiving to all, and remember we are blessed.

We are a Portland area family with four small children and one car and we both work. This generally isn’t a problem as my husband can easily bike to work (and does the majority of the time) and I can bike/public transport if need be (though my hours make that a little harder). If you have a bike, you can make public transportation a lot more feasible. The 24 minute walk is probably only 10 minutes by bike and you should be able to hop right on a line directly to work. Maybe bike to Hollywood if that is near you?

My husband already bikes to work, but the weekend bus schedule is what makes it difficult. I have the option of two busses with a 40 minute wait or one bus plus two light rails.

The haircut is looking good! Today I’ve put up some outdoor Christmas decor: did the window boxes, hung wreaths on two doors, decorated the deck just a bit, and covered a tomato cage with 2 long garlands, a wreath (for the base), and some pinecones and berries…have it next to the door in an old galvanized wash tub that I use for container gardening. I baked two pumpkin pies and will begin making Frog Eye Salad soon. I’ll also be prepping cauliflower (for Cauliflower Mashed Potatoes), chopping onions, and make a salad for tomorrow. Not sure what I’ll be making for supper, but probably something quick and easy. LOL.

Your hair looks super cute!

Oh and we’re a single car family, I’m a SAHM and he commutes by bus. So your guess holds true for us!

What is Frog Eye Salad? I heard that mentioned on the news and haven’t a clue!
Katy, love the hair….but if you don’t like it short, it will grow quickly.
Today I am:
Getting the house ready as I am hosting my extended family tomorrow evening for our Thanksgiving meal.
Fixing what food I can ahead.
Reading a little between completing chores
Counting my blessings….which are many!
Wishing all the fellow readers a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I think your hair looks really cute! I followed the whole thing on Facebook and I have to say, I think it turned out well. I am a teensy bit older than you, and whenever I cut my hair that short, people tell me I look younger. Sometimes long hair can drag my face down a bit. But my hair is long now and will remain so until after the holidays when I can afford a cut!

Today I did the usual assortment of chores: laundry, dishes, feeding my 13 year old “always hungry” son, making a phone calls to the health insurance company (I actually spoke with someone who was sharp and told me what I thought would be a $2300 bill would actually be about $250, so fingers crossed he knows what he’s talking about!!!) and dreaming about (okay, looking online) at buying a house because I’m so doggone mad at my landlord right now. Sigh.

Happy Thanksgiving! We will also be having Brussels sprouts, which is one thing I’ll be feasting on since I’m a vegetarian and won’t touch the chicken my husband is cooking…

You/your haircut look so beautiful!

I am uncertain how brussel sprouts can be considered a Thanksgiving necessity. Or a necessity at any time really.

I agree. Me No Likey Brussel Sprouts.

Today I am:
Glad to be home after frantically cleaning our other house between guests.
Proud of myself for turning in a draft of a big paper on time.
In that weird time when you are wrapping up breastfeeding and your hormones don’t quite know what to do with themselves.
Wishing my husband and I could cuddle up and sleep for like two days.
Even after a semester of nonstop reading, really wanting to dive into my last two books.

We are another family with only one car… my husband works and goes to school and I work (all outside the home, with work or school 6 days a week)… so this really is a big pain in the tuchus! Every day someone is inconvenienced, but for the past 6 months we’ve been able to make it work. I’m longing for the day when my husband only goes to school – at that point he can start taking the bus (for free!). It is hard – but not impossible – to make it work. The sacrifice is worth it to me to not go into debt or spend loads more money on a 2nd car.

I love the idea of being a single car family, but I’m realizing it’s near to impossible if we want to continue having our kids involved in activities while I work in a job that’s ten miles from the house. We realized the only way I could get to work on time this Saturday without leaving two hours ahead of time is for me to take the only car with me, which should be okay, but is certainly far from ideal.

Glad to hear someone else confirm that it’s a “pain in the tuchus.”

We are a one car family…but no kids yet (baby on the way). For now I take the bus-tram-walk combo or take the car. I’d also like to carpool and hitchhike more. Husband works 2 minutes away on foot…we actually rent this apartment in order to make that happen and support our one car lifestyle. Public transport can be a pain, but be glad to support it when you do use it:)

Your new hairstyle is beautiful!

We also skipped Black Friday (always do) and stayed home to putter around the house, which is my favorite way to spend any day.

We have an empty nest, both of us work outside the home (me only 2 days), plus are involved in a number of things at our church. One car is only possible because my husband and work only minutes from our house and his job starts before and ends after mine, so on my work days, I drive him to work, go to work, and then pick him up after I get off. On days I don’t work, I can drop him off and use the car for errands etc. (I have a bad back and arthritic knee, so walking is not possible right now). On Sundays, our church starts at 10, but many times Mark has to go early for deacon meetings, soundboard, or set-up, so I just go along, sit in the nursery and read, or join the before-church prayer team. That way he doesn’t have to run back and get me. It does become a little tricky on Saturdays (the day my husband does all his errands), but we work it out. It’s so worth it to not have two cars to worry about!
