A Non-Consumer Sunday

by Katy on November 4, 2012 · 19 comments

Painting curbside find furniture, mixing my own colors from what we have in the basement, cutting the painter’s tape lengthwise to make it last twice as long. Wondering if any of my friends have a small amount of polyurethane that I can use.

Hanging laundry on indoor racks, raking my own leaves, eating up my leftovers and renewing a Craiglist ad for a thrifted bicycle I’m selling. Cups of tea.

Walking to the grocery store, carrying my own bags, work and school lunches prepared at home.

A Sunday.

I made applesauce out of the last batch of free apples I got last month, dropped hubby off at airport for business trip and stopped for a grocery store loss leader on the way back. Watching recorded movies on the pvr for entertainment this evening. Planning on no grocery shopping after today until hubby returns in five days 🙂

I love Sundays and today with daylight savings time change we got an extra hour! I did laundry, sorted out winter clothes and Christmas stuff to donate/consign tomorrow (my endless quest to eventually own nothing we do not love or use), made chili, planted tulip bulbs and pansies for next spring’s colors, cleaned out my purse and went to a 2 hour Jin Shin Jyutsu class. A lovely day.

I read this and think what is so special. I am doing similar things. Made a great dinner from stuff on hand, baked cookies, made chai tea from scratch (it was a kitchen sort of day). And then I realize that not everyone does this. Not everyone makes towels, scrubbies, wash clothes, “rags”, and clean with vinegar and baking soda. Once one begins this lifestyle, it is nearly inconceivable that everyone doesn’t!

Returned a library movie, washed and hung laundry on racks, double-couponed laundry soap, planned dinner around (yummy) leftovers. Planned the week’s meals and made a lunch for tomorrow. Thrift on!

I actually taught my mother something thrifty today. She had used a silicone liner in her oven and it baked on the bottom of the oven. She was trying to scrape it off with a butter knife. I calmly showed her how to make a paste from baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. I put the paste on the baked on silicone. I let it sit for a few minutes. Then I took foil balled up and scraped it away. The silicone was gone in minutes. She was so happy and I told her that the only cleaning products she needs in her house was vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda! Funny to be teaching my own mother something!

My beautiful Sunday was spent cleaning out my spare closets and sorting some toys, games and puzzles to go to Goodwill. I love Sundays.

And I love the catharsis of decluttering.

Washed clothes and put them on hangers in the closet to dry. Wanted a hambuger, had the frozen patty but no bread or lettuce so I ground some flax seeds in the coffee grinder, mixed with water and spread on cookie sheet and baked flat bread. Mayo, ketchup, mustard, red onion, a leaf of fresh kale and I’m eating a pretty good burger here. Read a library book and did some hand sewing. Ran a couple of miles just to enjoy the pretty day. I found a nickle yesterday!

My Non-Consumer Sunday….
Preparing a home cooked Sunday lunch, painting old shoe boxes to house toys, super gluing a leg back on a playhouse chair, making pizza fresh from scratch rather than paying £16 for 2 to be delivered – oh and recycling an old school badge off a previous cardigan and wonderwebbing it onto a bigger size in prep for back to school today!
Once Kids were in bed… watching ‘New Moon’ on Film 4 (Free TV as we don’t have cable and I didn’t buy the DVD’s although a fan!) in anticipation of Breaking Dawn Part 2 coming out in November. (There’s something special about watching a film on TV – I wonder if it’s because it’s a communal activity and you know others across the land are enjoying it at the same time?) And I was continuing with my knitting of scarves for my recycled Christmas gift boxes in the commercial breaks – after all, they need to get done and who wants to watch adverts (particularly toothpaste ones – my pet hate)?

oops missed off… whilst lunch was cooking, typed up a post about Simple Homemade Christmas Chutney – which will be accompanying the scarves in the boxes…

We are enjoying some weird weather here in the south-west (UK) so in order to get out of the house (and turn heating and lights off) we packed our walking boots, met a friend who has a camper van, parked with a sea view and waited for the weather to clear whilst eating homemade cake with tea and coffee. We knitted Christmas presents, pored over maps, planned future walks, watched stormy skies change colour, listened to the hail hitting the van then watched rainbows as the sun came out – never long enough to get that walk – but we met other friends, put the world to rights, took some beautiful photos and came home to dinner made from leftovers which we ate whilst watching the last in the latest series of Downton – shall I tell you what happens? Well, Carson the butler………no, that would be mean…..the good news is that there is a Christmas Special…..and lots more Christmas knitting and baking and preserving to do.

Did laundry with homemade soap, made PB &J out of an entire loaf of bread to freeze for mornings when leftovers can’t be turned into work lunches, finished knitting a baby hat as a present with scraps of yarn, and cleaned the house with nothing but vinegar and baking soda. I am anticipating what the mystery graphic might be.

Sounds like my Sunday. I hanged out laundry, cleaned the house and finished up the leftovers. Plus read a library book.

Walked down to the farmer’s market and supported our local farmers :). Then in the afternoon I went to a food swap! It was small but very fun. I brought homemade toaster pastries and popcorn balls and left with pumpkin butter, banana bread, and cajeta (goat milk caramel, nom nom nom).

Preparing quiche with homemade crust and using what’s in the fridge…planting narcissus bulbs (only .80 each) in vase (found for free at my local dump) with rocks I’ve been re-using for years…enjoying the sunshine streaming through my kitchen window while I saute mushrooms (foraged locally) and onions from a neighbors garden. Lovely day, Sunday.
