Bank Robberies, Kitchen Islands and Porn. Oh My!

by Katy on November 16, 2010 · 36 comments

It’s been a week since I started taking a break from writing The Non-Consumer Advocate, and I have to say that it’s kind of weird. I keep coming across things I want to write about and then realizing that I don’t need to do it. I mean seriously, a Portland green living/backyard chickens/frugality blogger was arrested for a series of bank robberies. How could I not write about that?!

I went to look at a kitchen island from Craigslist, (which I didn’t buy) and ended up stopping at an estate sale and running into a friend  on the way home. She told me about how she fashioned a kitchen island from a used restaurant steel shelving unit, to which she attached a butcher block top and wheels. I will be going to her house and taking pictures, as I love this idea. (I did pick up an extra pie spatula for 50¢, which will come in handy on Thanksgiving.)

I drove all the way into work yesterday, (a 20 mile round trip!) only to find that I wasn’t actually on the schedule. I made up for it by lying on the couch all day intermittently napping and watching The Tudors on the streaming Netflix. I had listened to a library audio book of  The Other Boleyn Sister earlier this year, so this is piquing my interest. However, I have to keep the remote control right next to me, as anyone walking through the living room might assume I’m watching porn, as this Showtime series is not shy with the sex scenes. Not shy at all.

I hope you are all doing well and surviving without your daily dose of Non-Consumer Advocate.

Katy, I just yelled “Oh my gosh, I’ve got to go mop the floor!” to my husband since I read the part about taking pictures of my island! Give me a few minutes to get rid of the dust bunnies and crumbs…

Bank robbing isn’t sustainable! Silly bloggers.

You’d be proud of me – the last two days I have walked to work AND packed my lunch. Frugality double-whammy! Wham! Wham!

Lol I love The Tudors! It isn’t shy at all! I recommended it to my friends and she called me in horror because she started watching it when her MIL was in town. I guess I forgot to mention its… less then modest approach to history : ) Oh well, I loved the links BTW!

So glad to see you post, I’ve been missing you. I’ve almost finished the American Wasteland. Lots to think about! I’m planning on passing it on to my daughter in law at Thanksgiving. Thanks again.

I am not surviving very well at all without my daily dose of Non-Consumer Advocate! I am happy to see your post.

Oh me, oh my! I read the title and saw the picture and immediately assumed those where two bank robbers defiling a kitchen island. I thought, “Katy is certainly taking this respite from writing to a different level and a different direction. And, here I am fighting raccoons, still, and taking mundane pictures of bananas for my blog.

Hooray for your new post. I could never go ‘cold turkey’ when it comes to the Non-Consumer Advocate. I joined your group on facebook. It’s kept me from suffering withdrawal symptoms.

Yay!!! You’re back. Your blog is the only blog I have bookmarked and I was sad thinking I might have to delete it. I am trying my hardest not to get sucked into facebook (my life is busy enough without it), so I can’t visit you there. Even if you don’t post everyday, I hope you don’t give it up for good.

Way down here in Oz – I’ve been missing you too! I won’t go on Facebook – so I just popped in here ‘just in case’ and was so happy to see a semi-blog!
Best wishes from Perth, Western Australia.

Wow. Coming to this really, really late. But just want to say I hear you about watching HBO or Showtime porn in public. Last summer, I was watching the first two episodes of the 3rd season of True Blood from my seat on a Virgin America flight and had to keep fast forwarding through the sex scenes for fear my seatmates would think I was watching porn — even though the airline provided it! At one point, the pilot came on the intercom to let us know our altitude and all that geeky stuff, and the screen froze during a scene of very naked people doing very naked things on a big bed. There was no fast-forwarding and a very red-faced Beth.

I think from now on I’ll watch my porn from the comfort of my living room.

As for the Safeway vs. New Seasons post and comments and your taking a break, I’m happy to chat with you about it outside of this blog sometime if you want.

Oh, Katy,
I’m sooooooo glad you’re back. I have been missing you so! I stopped checking for new posts because it just made me sad! Now my Thanksgiving gratitude list has overflowed! I can’t wait to read the newer posts…something about frugal bank robbers…What did they steal…coins???

Reply

Nancy from Mass November 30, 2010 at 12:16 pm

I bet the robbers stole the coin wrappers so they could wrap up all the coins they’ve been saving and picking up off the ground!

BTW: Glad to see you’re back Katy!
