Giveaway For Gretchen Rubin’s “Better Than Before”

Better Than Before cover

Update: The giveaway has ended. Congratulations to Sara Schlageter whose name was randomly chosen to win a copy of Gretchen Rubin’s newest book!

I have a very special treat for Non-Consumer Advocate readers today, which is a giveaway and review for Gretchen Rubin’s new book, Better Than Before: Mastering The Habits of Our Everyday Lives. You may know Rubin’s name from her bestselling Happiness Project books, or perhaps from her current media blitz. (It’s certainly the first time that someone I’ve known has commanded the cover of Parade Magazine!)

Like her Happiness Project books, Better Than Before mixes Rubin’s first person narrative with research, both academic and anecdotal, (leaning heavily on her sister who seems quite resigned to her lifelong status as guinea pig.) Based on the premise that habits “help to preserve self control,” and that “habits make change possible by freeing us from decision making and from using self control,” this book explores what habits are, and how each of us can notch them into our daily routines.

As Rubin writes, “Habits are the invisible architecture of daily life.”

But wait . . .  different people form habits very differently, and we how respond to expectations greatly effects how we incorporate new habits. Rubin postulates that there are four distinct, yet overlapping habit-forming types:

Upholders respond readily to both outer expectations and inner expectations.

Questioners question all expectations, and will only meet an expectation if they believe it’s justified.

Obligers respond readily to outer expectations but struggle to meet inner expectations.

Rebels resist all expectations, outer and inner alike.

I went back and forth on who I am, but settled on 60% questioner and 40% rebel. (She doesn’t write about labeling by percentage, but that’s just the rebel in me!) I wish I could be an upholder, as I feel it would lead to a naturally disciplined life, but I know that since my secret and immediate first response to being asked to do pretty much anything is fuggedaboutit, it’s simply not meant to be.

I could write endlessly about this book, (and certainly took enough notes while reading it!) but I know you want me get on with the giveaway portion of this blog post!

To enter to win a copy of Gretchen Rubin’s Better Than Before, write your name in the comments section below, along with your worst habit. I will randomly choose one winner on Friday, April 24th at 9 P.M. PST. One entry per person, U.S. residents only.

Good luck from both me and Gretchen!

My worst habit is staying up too late watching TV. It’s my “me” time but then I’m tired all the next day. Vicious cycle . . .

Worst habit is buying things I love and never using them. I want them to stay perfect, so rather than actually enjoy them, I let them sit in their perfection, withering away in a closet.

Karen3848…worst habit is expecting my husband to magically see things that need to be done in the kitchen, instead of just asking him to do something. If I ask, he is happy to do it. I just frustrate both of us by my expectation!

Reply

A. Marie April 21, 2015 at 1:08 pm

I agree that expecting men to “magically see” housework that needs doing is generally unrealistic. (There are exceptions to every sweeping generalization, of course.) My DH is an obliging angel about doing things once they’re pointed out to him, but they have to be pointed out.

Other worst habit (besides expecting DH to overcome this effect of his Y chromosome) is another one noted by previous commenters–correcting others’ grammar and language use. I’m an editor by trade, and I have to remind myself from time to time to leave my work inside my home office.

If that’s not a habit, then I’m going with no cardio exercise even though my dad has heart issues. Plenty of walking for this city gal, but the cardio doesn’t happen much. Thanks for the giveaway! My bad habit is not finishing projects. I have a few half crocheted projects, half cleaned family room, half beaded necklaces…well a lot of in progress things!

Procrastination, without a doubt or even a close contender–and I obviously have a lot of company here! I hope there is a VERY long chapter about this in Gretchen’s new book!

Overcommitting – doing so many things I feel like I do none of them well.

My name is Roberta Price, and my worst habit is Pinterest. (I feel like I’m at a 12-step meeting…) Or general untidiness. Or impatience with my kids. (Or that’s a character flaw) :/

Sarah…I only get to list one bad habit?! I think have time to do so many craft projects so I go buy the supplies and then never do them. 🙁

I’m just going to go with biting my nails. Mostly because my boyfriend scolded me for it last night (by scolded I mean told me to use the clippers if it was bothering me).

My worst habit is not finishing a task 100%…like baking cookies but leaving the dirty cookie sheets in the sink, or washing clothes but not folding them and putting them away. 🙁

Tricia Sinon Murray – My worst habit: One more thing ~ thinking I can always get one more thing done before I leave the house. Then I am often late! It negates the good feeling of getting one more thing done…

Melissa April 22, 2015 at 8:04 am

Procrastination is by far my worst habit. I’ve given up. It’s who I am. I embrace it now, making it work for me, and it doesn’t cripple me near as much as it used to!

My worst habit is piling too much on my plate and not leaving enough time to relax. “Overdoing leaves too little time for savoring.”

My name is Diane C and I’m a procrastinator. If I could figure out how to submit this comment at the very last second, I would. Whoa, does that mean I’m not procrastinating on something? Progress!

Worst habit is going to thrift centers or garage sales and buying something that I really don’t need because it’s ridiculously cheap.

My worst habit is not dealing with photos and paperwork, I put the photos in boxes with every intension of doing “something” with them and they are still there…in a box, unlabeled and no one knows what they are about but me.
Paperwork, unfiled and save too much, for too long.

Staying up too late is one of my worst habits. I only get about 3 or 4 hours sleep a night and I’m chronically tired, but it’s the only “me” time I have to read, etc.
