How to Garden Like Donna Summer

Remember my Goodwill disco-ball planter?

It took me awhile, but I finally planted it up. And because a disco-ball planter requires a dramatic plant, I chose a big bright $2.99 plant from Fred Meyer that should stand up to the bling-y competition.

Summer has finally hit the Wolk-Stanley backyard, Donna Summer that is.

It looks great! Nice and healthy and the color reflects beautifully from the jazzy pot. Great job — because you know, hey, “she works hard for the money” !!

I would like to know where is the cheapest place to buy canning supplies. I need canner, pressure cooker, and jars? Any canning information would be nice too.

I watch the estate auctions for jars…of course, they have no lids or rings. I have found jars and rings at the dollar stores….they work as well as the big brand names. You might be able to find a cold packer at an estate auction also. But if you buy a used pressure canner that way, you will want to take it to the extension service to have the gasket checked. Also, if you put out the word to family, friends or even older people who no longer can you might get a good deal or have somethings passed just passed on to you. If that happens with canning supplies for me, I try to return the favor by return a sample of the finished product to the generous giver.

estate sales are good around here, though hot-water bath canners show up at thrift stores pretty regularly.

You might want to just put the word out through circles of friends, canning has been so trendy lately I’ve picked up a lot of jars bought by new canners who decided after a season it just wasnt’ for them.

Is that a coleus? The pink and green reflect so neat in the glass pieces. And by the way, I liked the fun dialogue…cause we all work hard for our money and who wouldn’t love the Bee Gee’s. Groovy!
