New York City Photo Essay

by Katy on December 14, 2015 · 10 comments

Today was my first full day here in New York City, visiting my sister for her 50th birthday celebration. My sister, my mother and I all have the same Ugg boots. (They were our mother’s holiday gift from last year.) We’re not usually together, so it’s pretty funny when we are.

All the same boots

Here we are on the #6 train in the Bronx, complete with daylight, as the subway is above ground at this point.

Team Bronx!

I love all the wonderful old tilework throughout the New York subway system. I always feel the need to photograph it when when I hit town. You’ll likely be seeing more as the week progresses!

Of course, it makes a great backdrop as well!

And no NYC trip would be complete without a bagel or two. Even the most mundane bagel is better than the very best that Portland has to offer.

I want to share this adorable garland that my sister made using nothing more than twine and her neighbor’s pinecones. She didn’t even glue or sew them, as they were apparently sappy enough to stay secure with a simple wrap of the rope. I’m totally stealing this idea when I get home!

But one of my favorite observances from today was this humble sidewalk patch, which featured a sweet little paw print.

I do love me a New York City trip!

Absolutely awesome pictures! Might steal that pinecone idea myself, nifty and thrifty! 🙂

Your sister is beautiful at 50!You all are a great looking bunch. I make pine cone ornaments out of craft wire, fake snow, and glitter. The garland is a great idea and I am totally gonna steal that one myself. It looks so simple and naturally elegant. Katy, you seem to run across the neatest things. Have a great trip!

NYC is expensive I know. It’s funny you posted a food pic of a bagel, when I take photos of foods I make at home, my Facebook friends call it “food porn”, just to get them jealous. I like the pine cones, but the ones from the white pines are covered with pine pitch that makes them a pain to handle. Back in the fall, we visited a friend and at the edge of her yard there was a pine tree, yellow or scotch, not sure but it had beautiful pine cones that were bigger than both my hands cupped together. She said take all you want, they are a pain to clean up. So my guys got out a glove from his tool bag in the trunk and picked a dozen. They are spiny, can’t pick them with your bare hands. Beautiful for crafts, they go for $2 -3 in the craft store. Each. Made decorations with the children to go on the tree and for a table centerpiece. As well as bagels, NYC has the best pizza places, small mom & pop family places are the best. Being you are there during the season, you must go to Rockefeller Center and see the tree. Usually they are a Norway spruce donated from people that live downstate in the Hudson Valley, beautiful trees.

I also noticed that Kroger has decorations outside for sale that are centerpieces. They are made from plain old real pine tree branches stuck in florist foam with a few fake berries, pinecones, and ribbon. I have branches all over my yard due to a recent storm here so I may attempt one myself. Can’t beat nature’s free materials.

I’m having bagel envy, that looks delicious. I’ve never been to NYC – maybe one day.
Have fun with your family!!

Katy, you are so right about the bagels!
My standby is always a toasted everything with a light schmear of cream cheese, accompanied by delicious NYC tap water!

Glad you’re having a fun trip!

Fun trip! Also, that bagel looks amazing.

My roomie just got a job with Spielman in Portland and brought home a gigantic bag of bagels. I thought those were good, but I can’t even imagine what an authentic NYC bagel would taste like.
