Portland — A Reality Check

Portland -- From November through mid-June. All the hipster food carts and ironic entertainment in the world won't save you if you can't handle the non-stop rain.

Rain today in Michigan. Call me crazy, but I sure wish it was snow!

Rainy today here. And I was JUST thinking that I hate rainy days and too many of them make me grouchy.

I am so never moving to Portland. I’d have to change my blog tagline and everything…”crabbily living on less”.

It would never work.

Yep – Seattle here. Nuff said.
The rain doesn’t bother me so much now, but man, come April I’m usually going out of my mind.

I could say the same about summer in Austin….the hipster vibe in 112 degree heat is no fun…but we are in our glory days now. Beautiful days. Send your rain this way. We still need it desperately.

I should post a picture of my driveway. It’s about 3 days from turning into that mushy mud-like substance. When we were in SE Portland, I used to pray for the street sweeper to come by on days like this!

Rain.
Of my existence, it is the bane.

🙂

Hearing all you people in rainy places…

Rainy in Chicago too. Tis a dreary day across the U.S.

Those leaves would suck to clean up, too 😉

The mid-Atlantic region is wet and dreary today. I’ve had enough. With all the traffic driving was not fun today. I like sunny days. I don’t think there’s ever a hipster vibe in the Baltimore area.

Waiting for our monsoonal rains to start full force. It will rain day in and day out. It will be hot and we will try and go splashing in puddles as much as possible.

Rain in Southern Oregon too. But I can see it snowing on the mountains through my office window. So I pretend I’m up there.

So true! I’ve told friends to try out Portland in November before deciding to move there.

I miss the coziness of curling up with a book, an apple, and a mug of hot chocolate on rainy days…all through the winter! I also miss having friends intrepid enough to go hiking in the rain.

However, it’s 63 and sunny where I am right now. I’d love to move back to Portland, but I like my vitamin D, too :).

Looks like my patio. I was in Sellwood yesterday and there were big piles of leaves un tba street. I thought if they weren’t wet and mushy, it would have been fun to run and jump in them.

I work all day in a big windowless room. I would be happy to see any weather just to assure myself that there is a sky outside.

That’s really funny.

No no no.. I like a thunder storm now and again but I thrive in the desert. Need LOTS of sunshine. But I enjoyed visiting Oregon last summer to visit a friend– could not handle so much rain and gray skies. But such beautiful land when the sun IS out! Happy Thanksgiving!

The Portland rain isn’t exactly non-stop. It’s variable, like your modern windshield wipers. Some days it rains hard and stormy, like today. Other days, it’s just a gentle mist and barely a drizzle. Okay, well, MOST of the rest of the Winter days fall somewhere in between. Our TV weather forecasters here speak of “sun-breaks.” Me, I like it anyway. Late Spring through early Fall is the sunnier payoff. Usually.

I don’t mind the rain, but my top two pairs of shoes have cracked soles that let in the wet, and my only other pair of casual shoes I need to save for things that are better than just dinking around. I don’t want to go to the shoe store. I certainly wish Salvation Army or Goodwill would come through for me.

Katy, what do you do for keeping your feet dry in non-stop rain? We get enough here in Michigan this time of year, and I’m sick of soggy shoes and wet feet.

Cold, cold, cold, and snowy here in Alaska. But sunny! And I will take it over those gloomy Northwest winters any day.

Not raining here in LA, but it did last weekend. We are so lame when it comes to wet weather that the slightest storm (read: drizzle) causes the radio stations to pull out their “STORM WATCH” bumper music. LOL So silly to me, originally from Chicago.
