$100 Goodwill Gift Card Challenge Update

I may not have earned impressive numbers of sales from my $100 Goodwill Gift Card Challenge, but I did make a $60 eBay sale from the LoveSac cushion covers, which isn't too shabby considering that I paid just $4.99 for the pair of them. I originally listed them for $45 apiece, but accepted an offer for $30 each. Sadly, no interest in the framed $9.99 David Hockney poster yet.

Here's the breakdown of eBay fees:

This time I went to a Goodwill Outlet pay-by-the-pound "bins" store, where I spent $9.21 on four items to resell.

What did I buy?

This North Face men's "Castle Rock" windbreaker jacket, which I was able to identify from code numbers on the tag. Nice and lightweight, which matters when you're paying by the pound! Similar new ones sell new for $140.

I also bought this Zassenhaus hand crank coffee mill, which may have been a mistake as I think it's missing the bottom part and was pretty heavy. I was dazzled by the high price of this brand and didn't inspect it thoroughly. A similar one sells on their website for eighty euros, which is around $93 dollars.

I immediately recognized this Spot The Dog plush from when my kids were little. It weighed almost nothing and sometimes vintage plush sells for big money. This one'll be a small sale, but it's unlikely that it cost more than a dime.

Middle school Katy would've would've flipped over this Deluxe Everyday LeSportsac handbag, as this brand was The! Thing! back in the day. They're still churning out adorable patterns and best of all, these nylon bags weigh very little. I kept the price low for a hopefully quick sale. Even though new versions sell for $115!

My goal is a thousand dollars to donate to the Oregon Food Bank at the end of the challenge, so I'll definitely be heading back to the Goodwill Outlet bins in search of lightweight high value items to sell.

I still have $75.81 left on the card.

Hopefully my next update will be filled with more sales!

  1. It seems like a great strategy to source from the Goodwill Bins. I admire the lengths you are going to to maximize your return on your gift card.

  2. Interesting! I love your “bins” content.

I don’t resell, but I’ve thought about it. For your eBay sale, how are “transaction fees” calculated? Is it a straight percentage? Do you weigh the packaged item and generate a label from eBay? (In the past, I’d assumed that you were going to USPS to get it weighed and pay for shipping.) At what point do you have to pay taxes on your proceeds?

    1. eBay takes different amounts from different categories in a way that's kind of confusing, but it's generally around 15%. However, their site has the most users, so it's worth it. I weigh my own packages and use previously sold listings and my own estimation to input the measurements and weights for listings. I arrange for package pickups through the USPS.com website, so I rarely even go to the post office.

  3. I remember LeSportsac from the 70s and didn't realize they're still around. Good luck on your sales! I think what you're doing for the food bank is awesome.
