Five Frugal Things — Vinted & Closet Organization

1) I repaired a wooden hanger when the metal hook got detached. This required rooting around in the coat closet for both pieces, so I’m giving myself full credit for this project, even though it only took twenty seconds to complete.

Our under the stairs coat closet is “open concept,” so it needs to stay clean and organized. The cohesive hangers help create the illusion of order.

Of course the wooden hangers are from Goodwill and the wire baskets are curb picked.

What am I, a Rockefeller?!

2) Someone in my Buy Nothing group was giving away leftover apples from a school fundraiser, so I threw my name in the hat and then forgot about it as it was a popular offering.

Guess what? My name was chosen, so I’ll walk over this afternoon to collect my spoils. I’m not sure the amount, but this might give me the motivation to assemble some freezer pies to do “future Katy” a favor. After all, Thanksgiving is right around the corner!

3) I keep reading about people selling their excess Stuff on Vinted, so I decided to give them a look see. My daughter has a favorite pair of pants that she’s worn to pieces, so I figured this was a perfect opportunity to scout a replacement pair.

It’s different than eBay as the people getting rid of their things don’t seem to be professional resellers, so the photos and descriptions are less than ideal. However . . . the prices are definitely cheaper. Plus there’s free shipping, which brings the price down even further.

4) My husband and I are currently watching the second season of Ludwig through my sister’s Prime Video/Britbox subscription. This show puts the “plus” in A+ — excellent writing, the casting is immaculate and the characters are absolutely stellar!

Having to wait a week between each episode is excruciating.

5) I snipped off all the spider plant babies to propagate on the kitchen windowsill.

I don’t need any more spider plants, but my neighbors in the Buy Nothing group seem to respond positively when I put them up for offer.

Also . . . it might be time to clean the outside of this window, even though it’s only accessible by ladder.

Now your turn, what frugal things have you been up to?

  1. I really like Vinted as a seller. And I made my first purchase there which went very well.
    1. A friend left more tomatoes at our door. Fresh tomatoes in November!
    2. Eating scappy things while Dh was away so no grocery spending.
    3. Received a North Face rain jacket from Buy Nothing.
    4. Mailed out my Vinted sales in re-used mailers. Listed more on Vinted.
    5. Used Staples points (from recycling empty ink cartridges gathered from dh’s work trash cans) to buy lined notebooks. The notebooks were in the ‘bins’ which apparently have decreasing prices over the week. I happened to go today on my way home from anther errand and it was $2 day for the bins. So I got 6 notebooks for $6 in points, so zero out of pocket. They are nicer quality than the Dollar Tree, plus that is $1.25 now.

  2. 1) The renovation from hell is thisclose to being done.
    2) I took myself to the Oregon High Desert Museum this morning to celebrate my 67th birthday.
    3) I finally applied for the loan to cover the rest of #1 above.
    4) Absolutely gorgeous weather today and without even trying I have 4160 steps today (mostly due to #2 above)
    5) figured out how to take a shower in the shower stall that has soft scrub all over the floor (lay a towel down on the floor and set the shower chair on top of it). Feels so good to have a clean body and freshly washed hair).

  3. Today would’ve been my parents’ “wedding” anniversary…there was no wedding, it was during World War Two, they just took their vows in the pastor’s study….see Frugal Girl blog for all the romantic details. RIP, Mom and Dad!
    1. Downtown trek: paid off one credit card at the bank, paid off the property tax at the county tax office. Done and done!
    2. Took all the crappy items that a certain out-of-state charity had mailed me and donated it to the local Salvation Army.
    3. Having purchased a mega-sized 36-roll case of toilet paper, I took out the rolls and stored them in the bathroom cabinet. Then I re-used the plastic bag (wrapper) as a trashcan liner. Thanks to Donna Freedman’s old Surviving and Thriving blog for the hack: you carefully cut the bag/wrapper open at one end, take out the contents, and it is good to go as a trashcan bag. It actually fits the kitchen trashcan better than the plastic trash bags designed for that purpose!
    4. Sent off for a free trial subscription — 6 free issues of a magazine. Will cancel when the free trial is over. The offer said no obligation.
    5. Decided not to take the campaign bumper stickers off my car since they were for now-Senator-elect Talarico and now-Governor-elect Gina, et al — and all those Democrat candidates won their statewide elections. Sadly, our county voted overwhelmingly red — shame on all of those Republicans! — so I am only too happy to gloat. Texas is now blue!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. https://hungryhappens.net/invisible-apple-cake-gateau-invisible/

I recently used some, shall we say vintage, apples and made this invisible apple cake – which is mostly dense apple layers. It’s delicious and could easily be made GF. You night want to give it a try. I have a crank apple peeler/slicer/ corer so it doesn’t take long to pull together. It lasts well in fridge and good for breakfast, snack or dessert.

I am dog sitting so staying close to home except brief errands.

Have been busy putting in spring bulbs in our yard and for friends /family. We have not had a hard frost yet but i m slowly tackling fall garden chores. One thing I learned volunteering in a community garden is how useful having a cheap plastic shallow sled is for transporting yard waste or garden stuff. Think dollar store or Five Below or yard sale. It can be pulled and slides over grass, dirt or pavement

  5. I made bread pudding with raisins and coconut for breakfast. I cut the recipe in half, but still have another serving for tomorrow morning. The bread I used was actually crescent rolls that burned on the bottom. I sliced off the burnt part, and you couldn’t even tell.

The bread pudding turned out much better than my lunch of green bean casserole. I used off-brand ingredients, and it was a mistake. I tossed the second helping because I knew I wouldn’t eat it again.

I didn’t go anywhere today but I did take a walk around the neighborhood before it started to rain. It’s cold and November-like now. Go figure! Then I took my grandson’s Halloween bucket to his house. Plans for Thanksgiving are up in the air.

I put a stop payment on the check I sent to pay my November assessment fees. The bank told me if the recipient receives it today, it will still be cashable, so I called the company and let them know. I doubt that after a week and a half it will magically arrive, but I told them I would pay electronically tomorrow after I was sure they didn’t get it. I guess I am done mailing checks. Much as I hate technology, it’s better than this.

My sister is sick, so I sent her some ginger ale and Ensure, so she doesn’t have to go get it. We agreed that I would pay out of the money I’m holding onto from her eBay sales.
