Are You A Super-Duper Scooper?

Grocery prices are rising, there’s no arguing this point. The temptation is to head over to the bulk food section and scoop to your hearts’ delight. Wait. Full. Stop. It is important to be a conscious consumer, because the prices are not necessarily less when you scoop-your-own.

Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy scooping out my own groceries, maybe because it brings back happy memories of childhood hours spent digging around in the sandbox, (minus the cat turds of course). Not to mention there’s also less packaging, and I can buy the precise amount I need.

Here is what seems to be the “scoop.”

Some products consistently cost less when bulk purchased:

  • Herbs and spices.
  • Oatmeal.
Other Products are only sometimes less expensive when bulk purchased:
  • Beans.
  • Popcorn.
  • Regular Flour.
  • Snack type food.
  • Cereal.

Should you be scooping-your-own at the grocery store? Without a doubt. Just make sure you are consciously comparing costs.  It is exactly these deceptively small expenditures that can make or break your budget.
