My neighbor set some garden items out on her parking strip, so I carried home the two colorful tables and the two black plant stands for my back garden. I left the tallest plant stand for someone else. I texted her a photo and let her know it was an “open adoption” if she wants to come visit with them.
-
I took a small container of leftover marinara sauce from the freezer and warmed it up in a saucepan, adding textured vegetable protein (TVP) from the Winco bulk bins. I then boiled half a bag of Trader Joe’s penne pasta, (99¢/lb) and served a fancier than normal lunch for my husband and I to enjoy in the backyard. The TVP gave the sauce a ground meat texture, while adding inexpensive protein.
-
I made a batch of sun tea using a two bags of mediocre Red Rose tea and a chai teabag from last month’s Seattle hotel room. (I absconded with all the tea bags from our pricey hotel room!) We don’t own a proper “sun tea” jug, so I used the glass pitcher we already own and rubber banded a plastic bag over the top to protect it from bugs. I could buy an official sun tea jar, but it makes more sense to use what we have. Not only is it cheaper, but it’s also environmentally advantageous to figure out multiple uses for the things we already own.

I took an evening walk and brought home this free-box can of Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup with a “best by” date of April, 2025. Pshh . . . that’s nothing in the world of expiration dates! I have no idea what I’d do with a jumbo can of condensed soup, but it can sit in my pantry until I figure something out. Ideas?

I didn’t spend a penny on Amazon, so I had no part of supporting a certain revolting billionaire’s wedding.

I’m not certain, but I’m assuming you might be vegetarian. If so, you could probably use tofu in the place of meat. I can’t see how many ounces are in the the can. If it’s the equalivent of 2 typical cans, you could use half for beef stroganoff and the rest for tuna noodle casserole. I can give you recipes for both. If you’re vegetarian, you’ll just have to substitute with yout “protein equivslent” of choice.
I think she’s just cheap AF.
Save it for the fall and make cream of mushroom soup in homemade bread bowls. I’d add more stuff to the soup itself, including mushrooms. No salt added soups in my experience mean no flavor, so it’ll need doctoring up.
WOW to the plant stands! My micro-savings this morn: used the very last two sheets of Barilla Gluten Free Oven Ready Lasagne noodles to make a teeny lasagna, using cottage cheese instead of ricotta and a couple of small zucchinis from our garden, sauteed, along with an already opened jar of pizza sauce. So cute & saved energy ’cause it was cooked in the toaster/convection oven. Keeping the house cooler by only partially opening curtains & cellular blinds…also put screens on the windows to help block heat & keep AC from running much. Sitting under a ceiling fan and feeling a bit cool right now. Almost forgot–reading through ALL of Katy’s past Five Frugal Things posts daily has reset my frugal motivation. Thank you, NCA Katy!! (I’ll re-read all the Five Tiny ones next)
Those plant stands were an awesome score!
-I’m eating two vegetarian based meals a day which is encouraging me to be creative and to use leftovers and produce in new ways.
-I had two out to eat meetings yesterday and managed to purchase only sides for each meal … a side salad, a baked potato, a cup of soup, and water with lemon to round out both meetings. I ended up spending less in total than others spent in one sitting. It’s unusual for me to have restaurant meetings in person- especially 2 in one day-so i figured I made the best of it.
– I just used the last of the sugar packets from a hotel stay last year in my morning coffee. I don’t usually use sugar but was craving something a little decadent this morning and made it work.
– I just combined the last of two different brands of BBQ sauce my son doesn’t like in the crock-pot. Added some apple cider vinegar, olive oil, seasonings, and a touch of brown sugar. He’ll never know it was the sauce he didn’t like now! BBQ Chicken baked potatoes are on the docket for dinner tonight.
-I attended a monthly herb social group yesterday with my homemade notebook and an open mind. The women who run it are so full of wisdom and knowledge and I’m grateful to be able to learn from them…. all for free!
BBQ chicken baked potatoes! Thanks for the idea! Sounds delicious!
It’s a favorite! We had them at a little independent BBQ place in TN on a family trip years ago and have been making them at home ever since! Enjoy!
That does sound good. I may try that too.
1) We went to a bbq at my uncles house yesterday. One of his neighbors was giving away frozen gallon ziploc bags of sliced peaches. She had picked them last year but was about to go pick this seasons so was trying to make room. I took a bag home and used some in my oatmeal this morning, they are really good!
2) Some college friends came over yesterday. We had wanted to go out to brunch but instead I took everyone’s order the day before for a very popular coffee shop that also serves some brunch foods. I placed the order, and picked it up before everyone arrived (there were 30 people in line so glad I ordered ahead of time!). I packed a small cooler with drinks I already had and we walked to the beach by my house to enjoy our brunch there. It was cheaper and it gave us more time rather than being rushed at a restaurant. Luckily the weather cooperated too and it was sunny at the beach rather than foggy.
3) I made a black bean dip and chocolate chip cookies on Friday. I served the dip and cookies at my book club on Friday evening, and then brought leftover dip and cookies to the beach brunch and then brought the rest of the cookies to my uncles bbq. There was still a lot of bean dip left so I froze it to use when I host 4th of July. I got a lot of mileage out of those two dishes and didn’t waste anything.
4) My SIL and her family are coming to visit next week so I borrowed a car seat from a neighbor for my 3 year old niece to use while they are here. They are using ny late FIL car while they are here so no car rental cost to them either.
5) My son found a new series he likes so I put 3 books from that series on hold at the library, they already came in and are ready for pickup!
1) We picked up a Makita reciprocating saw for $2 and a pair of shoes for my partner for $1 at a garage sale yesterday.
2) We cashed in a fully punched coffee card for a large iced dirty chai, which we shared as an accompaniment to our picnic lunch from home.
3) Stopped by a thrift store and didn’t purchase anything.
4) We did spend $15 on cedar fencing boards, but these will be turned into two large planters that would normally cost $50 a piece. The planters will allow me to manage the soil needs and deer protection for the berry bushes I trash picked a week or so ago.
5) I spent the morning making our weekly bread before it got too warm today. While the bread was rising, I made and baked some cheese and onion pasties for dinner tonight. I’ll re-warm them in the air fryer this evening so it doesn’t heat up the house.
1. DH loves snack bars and Grocery Outlet did not disappoint yesterday. He stocked up on some good deals. We like snacks to be healthy-ish and GF but aren’t overly particular otherwise.
2. I made a pot of pulled chicken using a pulled pork recipe I’ve had for many years. The chicken was on sale. I shared some with neighbors that had a very busy week. I baked a pan of GF cornbread.
3. I bought a large watermelon for $3.99. That’s a lot of fruit and the compost bin loves the rinds.
4. I brought home some round coated metal pieces from the Bagster we walk by. I will try to fashion fencing for squash plants from them. If I fail the pieces will go in the scrap metal bucket. It will keep them out of the landfill and save weight/money for the person that filled the Bagster.
5. I don’t even know who Lauren Sanchez is and I don’t care despite seeing her picture all over the place.
She’s auditioning for the part of the Joker in the new movie.
Hi KD, a great use for watermelon rind is watermelon rind relish if you are a canner. An average watermelon will make about 5 half pints of relish for the cost of some vinegar, sugar and spices. And it is sooooo delicious.
1. Another hot day in the Midwest, but I’m making do with open windows, a fan. The birdsong is a bonus.
2. Decided to thaw some chicken vegetable soup, and as I took it out of the freezer I noticed something popping out of its container. Finally figured out it was pizza dough. I let it thaw, too; then I thickened the soup with roux and topped it with the dough to make a pot pie. It’s not pot pie weather, but I’m trusting it will be good. It’s in the oven now. There’s still enough dough for a personal size pizza, so it went back in the freezer.
3. I did an old trick I’d forgotten about with my coffee. Today’s pot was made with the last grounds processed plus a couple of scoops of fresh. It tasted just fine. I don’t make a pot every day, so kept the used grounds in the fridge.
4. Today I’m wearing a top my cousin gave me. It had sat a long time in her dresser and developed a stain on the edge of the fold. I treated it with clear shampoo and let it sit before washing. I had to do this twice, but now it’s a perfectly nice top, like new.
5. Between the little free libraries and the public library, I now have so many books to read I am thinking of new ways to stack them. Thanks for the Gwendolyn Brooks recommendations — I’m reading People of the Book now, and loving it!
Geraldine Brooks is a wonderful author! Check out A Year of Wonder. That’s my favorite of hers!
I loved Horse!
Good find on the plant stands! I feel like I’m always juggling plants here to make sure they get enough light and having them spaced out around the house.
1. There is a hot air balloon festival in my town this weekend. Last night, my neighbor and I walked down a mile to the launch site. We could see perfectly well sitting in the shade across the street and didn’t have to pay admission or battle for parking.
2. One of my rain barrels has been leaking, so I took it apart, cleaned it up, and think I fixed the issue. I needed a new plastic downspout and found one at a yard sale down the street for a quarter. Now we’re ready for rain.
3. Walked through the Farmer’s Market this morning. I like one stand and they were there, so I bought two basil plants for $3 and texted two of my neighbors an alert on good prices.
4. Sold a set of books on Marketplace for $25 that I had gotten at a yard sale for $5. Also sold two yard sale items on Ebay.
5. I have been using the water from our dehumidifier to water my houseplants.
Using the dehumidfier water is brilliant.
Small things:
1) Am still picking raspeberries from the volunteer raspberry bush in the garden. She is VERY generous this year- perhaps due to the woodchip I put down last year plus the mild sunny weather and generous dousing of rain we got week ago!
2) Also am still in my summer clothing for the past couple of years.
3) However, am doing a declutter of my closet- it’s time. These clothes are no longer ‘me’- they feel weird, like a costume now. The business clothes will go to dress for success, the more casual ones I will just give away in a free box.
4) We have refreshments at home: I have been making mint and lemon balm iced tea, plus jamaica (hisbiscus/roselle) . Easier and less sugarno sugar than soda.
5) A lavish wedding can be fun! But what was on display was not mere vulgar excess, but also a way to say to the world “Eff you and your wars, your hunger, your bills, your lives.”
Special shout out to Oprah and Leo DiCaprio, who did not need to be there.
None of them needed to be there. Doesn’t the couple have actual friends?
Don’t answer that. Still it was fun seeing the Kartrashians outdo the bride in pure tastelessness.
I hope that this spectacle goes towards people NOT seeing these folks as aspirational, at all!
1. This week’s free Adventure Club outing with my sister was a library presentation on local history, followed by a simple lunch of fruit and sandwiches at my house afterward.
2. Made sloppy joes out of TVP (textured vegetable protein), onions, peppers, tomato sauce and seasonings.
3. Stopped at a neighborhood garage sale on our walk and found a jumbo mason jar that I had been wanting. Spent $1.
4. Made sun tea with tea bags from Buy Nothing. Used the new jumbo mason jar for this.
5. Replaced the rusted, painted over hinges on a hallway closet with nicer hinges from Buy Nothing. Perfect size and finish.
Do you have a formal “adventure club” with your sister, is this simply a term you use when you get together to do something, do you have a certain day or focus? Curious minds want to know!
Ecoteri, thanks for the question! It’s just our term for whatever we do together. Sometimes it’s truly an adventure, like when we take a day trip or do something extraordinary. It can be any day of the week depending on the activity, our schedules, and the weather. She has low mobility so that’s a factor, too. Our focus tends to lean toward free or lower-cost activities, but we’ve gone to higher-priced shows and restaurants, too. We’re both easy to please so it doesn’t take much to call something an adventure!
Next time, if you are not allergic, try sloppy joes with lentils. So yummy.
Edie, that’s a great idea. Thank you!
I can’t understand the “schezzo” wedding interest. The excess and vulgarity of the whole spectacle is appalling. I think the appearances of celebrities kind of negates their political messaging for me, at least.
1. picking and canning green beans, again….I hope to get many more.
2. made a medley of veggies languishing in the fridge. I am not vegetarian but in hot weather I prefer veggies over meat.
3. washed my everyday linen napkins and lay them in the sun on the lawn for whitening.
4. got a great deal on Flash foods….bacon!
5. using the toaster oven ….so much cooler in the house.
I love that you are grassing your linen napkins. That’s an ancient technique that works perfectly without adding chemicals.
I just made this week a chicken casserole with a jumbo mushroom soup, broccoli, cheese, and topped with bread I needed to use up! I am always on the hunt for mushroom soup on sale but free is even better!!!
I made a tuna casserole last week with cream of mushroom soup. It was so good!
My mother was a terrible cook and refused to eat casseroles, so I love them. 😀
1) made lunch for five from yesterday’s leftovers and other fridge dwellers
2) re-packaged leftovers using the shrink wrap from an empty mushroom container
3) washed my bedding and dried it in the sun and wind for low-cost solar and no artificial scent needed
4) first-sorted the craft / sewing area. got rid of many things and found the plastic pillow case packages to house individual projects and items I’m keeping
5) have not been wielding my ego in international financial circles causing the dollar to go slip-slip-slippin’ away…
Kathryn, that’s a great use of shrink wrap!
“other fridge dwellers”… Love it
1. Planning a barbecue tonight with three kinds of meats from the freezer plus a bag of briquettes that I got marked down to half price, and produce we already have: onions and Romaine lettuce for the grill. It’s gonna be delicious.
2. I took a leaf from your book, Katy, and washed one of my hall runners with OXY and Mrs. Meyer’s, and the garden hose. It’s currently drying draped over to backyard chairs.
3. Working my way through my TBR pile.
4. Frugal fail: I tried to make a sunshade out of grommets in a painters drop cloth, and all it did was make holes in the fabric. I’m going to repurpose that new drop cloth into under-cabinet kitchen curtains, and I might take the Gromit set back to the hardware store. I ended up purchasing a premade sunshade for about $30 from Amazon. I simply could not deal with it anymore and gave up. 🙁
4. I did not freak out over a proudly socialist mayoral candidate whose decisions do not affect me in the slightest.
5. I have not decided if I’m celebrating July 4 this year or not. On the one hand it’s still our country, and on the other hand, I don’t feel free.
Two chairs…
Grommets…
And two #4s. Oh well. Life is short. I don’t always have time to proofread.
I agree with not celebrating July 4th. Just not feeling it this year.
Katie, curious…. does Red Rose tea still include the little ceramic whimsies figurines in the box?
My mother collected those when she was a little girl in the 30s. I don’t think they do anymore. I like the animals, but my favorite ones were the fairytale/nursery rhyme figurines.
@V RedRose figurines are now available only when you order their teas online…but they are still free https://redrosetea.com/pages/figurine-faq
Unfortunately, we don’t have a Winco by our Seattle area house but I get Bob’s Red Mill TVP online from Vitacost whenever I have a 20% off coupon. We are a mixed family 😉 (I’m a vegetarian of 20+ years and I do most of the cooking, my husband and daughter eat meat occasionally, my daughter’s girlfriend is a pescatarian.) But everyone loves the TVP as taco “meat” in tacos, burritos, quesadillas and bowls. It’s so easy to flavor however you want it to be. Plus Bob’s products are very high quality, reasonably priced usually, and they are, as you know, employee-owned, so I buy as many of their products as possible.
Just remembered this: My mom used to make creamy baked Mac ‘n’ Cheese using Cream of Mushroom soup. As a teen, I’d even eat it cold it was so good. The buttery crunchy crumbs on the top and edges of the casserole were the best.
That does sound good! Do you still use the same amount of cheese and milk as you would ordinarily, or do you reduce the milk amount because the cream soup is a liquid?
As I recall, it was a lb. of elbow macaroni, cooked and drained. Mix noodles in large casserole dish with a can of soup, enough milk to fill the empty can of soup, a lb. of cubed cheese, sometimes diced onion, salt and pepper. Top with crushed butter crackers or buttered bread crumbs.
I absolutely love this “newsletter “ and the many varied ideas, ‘recipes’ and just plain GOOD SENSE!
1. I don’t remember if I told this story but when I was in the ER last week our neighbor called to say our Dane had jumped his 6 foot fence and was doing a walk-about. Without being asked, her daughter climbed in through our dog door (which is, admittedly huge), unlocked the front door, corralled the dog and locked him indoors until we got home. Then the daughter, who is 11 or 12, and sometimes helps me in the garden, decided I probably was not going to be able to water my garden, so of her own accord she watered all my flowers and my produce. I was overwhelmed by their thoughtfulness. Since we had just received a huge box of bings, raniers, corn, and blueberries from Walla Walla, courtesy of our relatives rebuilding our study, we shared half with them. There was too much for us to eat anyway, and fruit this fresh is never available here. Frugal is cultivating neighbors, which not only makes life more pleasant for all of us but can lead to favors back and forth that save us both money. (Last winter we gave them our extra small freezer that we had inherited, so things do go both ways.)
2. I was writing a shopping list for all the food I have been preparing to keep the workers full (they eat like the hard-working younger men they are, which is to say the first day I woefully underestimated the amount of goulash to make). One of them saw it and asked me what I was making, and I said homemade mac and cheese. “We are helping you to make sure things are done right but also to save you money. Don’t spend it on fancy cheese—buy Velveeta and elbow pasta and we will be totally happy. Volume is more important than fancy.” Frugal is having people around you know that you are frugal so they can help if so inclined.
3. Butter was on sale for $2.97 a pound so husband and I each got the max. Contractors were going to get beer for the evening and when they returned the next morning they each brough the max of butter. We had not asked them to do it but as one said, “We are well trained husbands.” We are pretty much set for butter until the next July 4 sale!
4. Harvested my first produce of the season: 28 cherry tomatoes and 6 scallions. This is early for our area.
5. Donated a few more fancy dresses I unearthed while emptying a closet for the renovation. Donated them to the local theater group’s costume closet. Got a tax receipt.
What a wonderful young woman your neighbor is raising! That story lifted my heart.
Mine too! I am so happy you shared it. What an amazing young neighbor!
Awww….what a sweetie pie!
Our dog doors have always been much smaller, and yet, during high school years, I have witnessed Son (always pretty skinny) letting himself in hours after he was told to come home. Grrrrr.
His other favorite trick was grabbing the rope ladder I had stored on the second floor in case of fire to let himself in our out via his bedroom windows.
Mostly posting because I get sick to death of the usual MY KIDS ARE THE BEST UPSTANDING WONDERFUL HUMANS things around here. My kids are the best but beyond sneaky in high school.
What a wonderful neighbour daughter you have! skinny kids for the win, I was once encouraged to worm into a long narrow place when I was little, to retrieve things in the corner of a built in kitchen table corner bench. At the time I saw it as an adventure, now I understand my occasional moments of full-on claustrophobic panic.
The garden watering gets extra kudos – at this time of year when everything is growing like stink, plants need watering an inconvenient times.
As for the butter purchases, that made me laugh. it was enough that you and your husband each got the max, and for your workers/guests/family to do the same is gold.
Your life continues to be extremely interesting, Lindsey
Those tables are so cute and fit in very well in your back yard.
1. Dh is housesitting, so he’s eating food there, earning a bit of money, and helping a friend. Wins all round.
2. At home I am watering with rainwater/collected water, harvesting more kale than we can eat (need to dry some tomorrow), and eating our own berries.
3. Doing the summer “spiffing up” of the house, since dh is a teacher and summer is when we have time. Today I bought spray paint to use on a light fixture that is not so pretty. Saved at least $50 over buying a new fixture.
4. Friend gives me stuff that she doesn’t want, I can sell or donate as I wish. Yesterday 2 bins of stuff came from her, one item I listed on ebay and sold for $200 within the day. Some of the rest is listed, some I sent pictures to the local antiques co-op to see if any of the vendors were interested, and a lot I still have to list.
5. I wanted to change up a group of original watercolors that we had been given. The mat they came with was so ugly. I thought I’d have a new mat cut, but instead I separated them and put them in frames I’d bought at a yard sale. They look lovely now and will be the beginning of a gallery wall in my tiny entryway. Zero money spent.
So many funny comments about the “wedding” (thank you…the laughs were much needed and appreciated).
1. Speaking of weddings on the opposite side of the economic spectrum, my partner and I are getting married in August (second marriage both and we are both in our 50s). We are only going to be gone for a couple of days (Las Vegas, baby!) and the hotel, flights were paid with my guy’s points (he travels for work) and my son will watch his canine brother. I bought an inexpensive dress and shoes and I’m really low maintenance (no fillers for me!) We also went ring shopping this weekend at a local antique shop and I did not find one yet, but I can say I would never buy one worth 50 million even if that was remotely possible. Gross.
2. We have changed our diets to be less processed and higher in protein. I’ve been fully plant-based since 2017 (and vegetarian since my teens), but my partner is veg-friendly but does eats fish and other meats on occasion. I find meal prepping keeps us on task and eliminates waste of vegetables/fruits. I am also utilizing the gym I pay for (PF-cheap one) and going for daily walks. I like to say I am getting in shape for the revolution.
3. Picking black raspberries in the fence rows of the cemetery next door to me. I have frozen about a quart so far. I also picked the cherries from trees I planted 2 years ago and froze them (2 quarts). My garden is not doing the best this year, but I did notice things are starting to grow.
4. I sold a bunch of junk on eBay. Nothing really high, but it adds up and was just taking up valuable space in the house. I am on a big decluttering trip right now and I cleared out a spare room to make into a library (and also declutter the books at the same time). I have also given away a bunch of things on Buy Nothing.
5. Paid extra on the debts. I don’t have many thankfully, but the goal is to eliminate them ASAP (including the mortgage). I am still working my fed job and was really happy to hear Big Balls resigned. But I still work with one eye open and have no idea when/if I will be fired. I stay prepared for whatever comes.
The plant stands are a great find. I would have snatched those up!
I don’t know what normal people do with giant cans of cream of mushroom soup. My mother-in-law would slop that all over some sort of meat, and she’d bake it to a crisp and call the result “dinner”. Even worse, at Thanksgiving, she’d use that to make the most DISGUSTING casserole known to man, a casserole that the Campbell’s Soup industrial complex has brainwashed the American population into believing is a “Thanksgiving tradition”. So disgusting. OK. You’ve probably guessed that I’d have left the soup in the free pile! Haha!
It is the most disgusting casserole on earth. One relative always made it, I hardly remember any of it being consumed. Tis nasty is all I can say,
Mushroom soup? How ’bout the green bean casserole recipe everyone uses at Thanksgiving and the holidays? You pour cream of mushroom over the whole works and it’s delicious, but Mom only served it twice a year. I think Campbell’s has the recipe somewhere, so it’s probably online.
1. I’ve been picking up the free magazines they give out at stores and sending them to out-of-state friends. One pal is recovering from surgery and this, along with a note, is her “get well card.” Figured she’d enjoy seeing stories about all the tourism stuff around here. She’s housebound for the time being, and TV only goes so far.
2. Found some battery-operated taper candles at a store so I don’t have to buy them online from the badass bald billionaire bridegroom’s big bad company. I inherited my grandparents’ wall-mounted candleholder, and these tapers perfectly fit it. Their fake flames even flicker, and it looks amazing. Don’t want to put real candles in there since I don’t want to burn down my house. I’ve been looking for something like this at garage/estate sales and thrift stores for over a year and no luck, so I bought new ones.
3. Bought some liquid soap on clearance, but its pump thing-y didn’t work. I save those pumps from other bottles. Found one that fit and we’re back in business. It was from an out-of-town store, so taking it back was not an option.
4. Since I asked off, and got off, Saturday for our neighborhood cookout/block party, I volunteered to work July 4. Don’t have anything else to do that day, and most of the local venues are super overcrowded. (I dislike large crowds.) Working during the heat of the day saves on my home electric bill, since I don’t have to turn down the AC. I can leave it on 78 or 80.
5. Got free advice from a church buddy about household repairs. It’s in their field of expertise. Since that person isn’t currently running a business or selling anything, they are happy to share their knowledge with me and I know their opinion is unbiased.
We invited the family of a friend from Wales over for dinner when they were visiting the U.S. Served enormous baked potatoes (they were not familiar with ones that big), grilled steaks, and green bean casserole. When asked for the recipe for the casserole, my husband blanked a bit and finally said, “It’s on the can.”
I don’t know if onion crunchies are an American thing?
I love eating outdoors! Your pasta looks great!
1. Happily accepted bubble wrap and packing paper from my mother-in-law. I’ve been needing this for ebay selling.
2. Husband and I had a cheap date: walked a nature trail, talked in the shade at a park, then walked in the sun at a park. Then started feeling like I was getting heat exhaustion, so we went and bought drinks. Then we ate pbjs and drove around looking at fancy houses.
3. Sold 2 more items on ebay.
4. Bought some clearance bread, jelly and peas.
5. Picked another cucumber
