Frugal Snapshots From Skamania Lodge

My husband booked a two night stay at Skamania Lodge by taking advantage of a Black Friday offer that inflated our credit card airline points. (This was my birthday gift.) Two nights in a luxury suite was just $90, complete with an in-room fireplace and a vista to beat all other views. It would easy to adopt the mindset of “we got such a deal, let’s splurge a little” to justify other spending, but that’s not how I roll.

Frugal challenge activated!

I started by scouring their website, as well as poring through reviews on Travelocity.com. I learned that their pricey in house restaurants had spotty reviews, despite being pricey. This didn’t surprise me as there seems to be an inverse relationship between “the better the view, the worse the dining experience.” Is this universally true? Of course not, but I’m always looking for a reason to break out my honed can-I-spend-less? skills.

This was the view from our room:

I learned that Skamania will put a microwave in your room for free and there’d be a Keurig coffee pot for our personal use. Armed with this knowledge, I packed three ready made Trader Joe’s meals plus some extra snacks like a wedge of Jarlsberg cheese that I’d received as a Chanukah present. I didn’t feel bad about holing up in the room, as it was damned cozy in front of the fireplace.

I also brought reusable water bottles and dish ware, plus my beloved Tetley tea bags. I don’t trust that hotel mugs get properly washed and not just wiped out.

At this point, you may be thinking that I’ve crossed a line into miserly territory and frankly I wouldn’t blame you. Luckily I’d also researched the best places to eat outside of the resort which led me to a nearby taco food cart. I’d rather treat myself to a plate of $10.50 tacos instead the $19 lodge version. Sure, we dined à la minivan, but the view of the Columbia river was just as stunning.

My husband and I enjoyed a nice long walk along the river, even though the wind was bitingly cold. I’d somehow forgotten to pack a winter hat, but I remembered that my purse contained two clean bandanas, which I fashioned into hats for the two of us. Sure, we looked goofy, but we were the only idiots to brave the windy weather and were wholly unobserved.

We wanted some munchies beyond the frozen Trader Joe’s meals, so we popped into the locally owned grocery store and assembled a basket of low cost food. Whole wheat bagels, onion and chive cream cheese, oatmeal cookies, cut mixed fruit, apples and milk for the coffees. $21.

There was no deprivation.

My husband had the forethought to bring an HTMI cord to connect his laptop to the in room TV, which allowed us to access our streaming services. We also played multiple rounds of gin rummy in front of the fireplace.

Last but not least, we also spent a bit on tips — $1o for housekeeping and a $5 bill for the guy who carried the microwave to our fourth floor room.

It would have been easy to let the low cost of booking the suite rationalize spending out, but I’m able to have just as much fun, (if not more so) by flexing my frugal muscles.

Such a stunning view! I never tire of mountain views. The closest ones to us are New Hampshire’s White Mountains which we manage to get to once every year or two. I love the fireplace right in the room. Cozy and calming. Your food looks and sounds great too. BTW I love the neon Yeti in back of you and Mr. NCA. My son, age 38, is a Yeti afficionado and would welcome a neon Yeti sign in his home. I’m happy you had so much fun on your birthday trip.

Looks amazing, hope you had a fabulous time. If you have fun what should it matter what you did or didn’t spend? You had a lovely time, beautiful location and used alternative local facilities, who likely keep your money local too!! Hope you are feeling better xx

Sounds pretty darn frugally perfect to me. And on one of the tours that DH and I took in connection with the JASNA 2010 AGM in Portland, we too got a stunning view of the Columbia River. You have scenery by the truckload in the PNW.

Love the photos of the beautiful mountain views!!!! What a nice birthday trip you had! Thank you for sharing; it’s almost like taking a mini-vacation to see that pretty scenery.
1. Our weather forecast was for a big freeze, so I made Food Pantry Soup (aka Dump It All In There Soup) out of items I already had: a bottle of tomato juice, frozen veggies leftover from a summer salad I took to the church potluck (never made the second batch bc few people liked the first), various canned vegetables and the crumbs still in the pan from our New Year’s Day cornbread. Have a big container full of soup that will last at least a week. When I get tired of eating it, I can freeze the leftover in a large yogurt container for later. Today, I added salty/spicy crumbs from a bag of tortilla chips as a garnish.
2. My battery-operated can opener is on the fritz, and my hands aren’t strong enough to grip and use the manual can opener. I looked at the thrift stores and stores that are closing: no can openers to be found. So I got one at Target. (Shame on me: it’s not secondhand.) Maybe not frugal, but it is a name brand, has a guarantee and is easy for me to operate. (I usually have trouble with can openers, lining the cans up correctly, but I got it right the first try with this one.) Hopefully, it will last a long, long time.
3. Read the guide book for Greece that I got at Goodwill, using their 20% off coupon. The book was tagged with the color of the week. The original Goodwill price was $1.99. Tag of the week made it half price, and the coupon was another 20% discount.
4. Did laundry and I’m air drying my clothes and towels in front of the natural gas “fireplace” (space heater) in the den; sure hope no one else sees this! But it adds moisture to the heated air, and I’m saving electricity by not using the clothes dryer. When I set up the wooden drying rack, I noticed that I’d paid $3.99 for it some years ago — the thrift store price tag was still attached. Just for fun, I looked it up online. Walmart sells ’em for $14.99; Amazon’s price is $39.99 (down from the regular price of 50 bucks) and other stores are somewhere in between. Good grief! I think I got my money’s worth and then some….
5. My friends gave me a late Christmas gift: a loaf of stolle, I think it’s called, a homemade German bread that is somewhat similar to a coffee cake containing dried fruit and nuts. Very delicious! That was my late-night snack last night and this morning’s breakfast. I have enough left over for the next few days.

Hopefully the not-sharp-edges opener. And I still have our at least 40 year old drying rack from Tru-Value – it was either $1.99 or $2.99. Better half put a sealer on it after I bought it.

You are a master planner! What a fun sounding trip!

1. I received 8 mini Bonne Maman jars (SO CUTE!) and 4 Oui yogurt jars from Buy Nothing. I bought bamboo airtight lids for the Oui jars on ebay https://ebay.us/V9Kg0c and will gift the lidded jars to my aunt for Christmas. She and I agree that gifts between us are practical and frugal! These are cute to boot.
2. I bought a wool rug from Home Depot that arrived badly damaged (hole all the way through the rolled up carpet). It has been returned and refunded and I got a replacement with a significant discount. A lot of effort, and not how I wanted it to go, but financially it ends well.
3. Brought home cookies, broccoli and chocolate from my volunteer time at the community garden.
4. Made brown sugar from white sugar and molasses.
5. Sold an item on ebay, walked to the PO. So a bit of money and a bit of exercise-a combo that is good for me.

Oh, what a lovely view!

Also, your cheese slicer is the exact same one my mom has. 🙂

My husband was not excited to wear my bandana hat, but happy enough once I had it on his head.

Hmm. I know that view. I may have stayed in a very similar room in that same wing of the building. I think I was on the 3rd floor. I have eaten at that taco place.,a couple of times. They have fairly good food. I did eat one meal in the dining room and had my very first brussel sprouts there. They were actually very good. I have never had any better anywhere else.

If you hadn’t tipped, I’d have branded you cheap, regardless of what you paid for the room. Though I would have tipped the person schlepping the microwave $10 and housekeeping a bit more.
I suspect you are like me – not untidy in a lodging room. I went to check out their rooms and sad to say, you lost a customer by wanting name/email. Glad you had a good time.

We didn’t have them clean the room until we checked out if that helps.

Katy, It sounds like a wonderful trip. We don’t like to eat out more than once a day when traveling so we pack breakfasts (even when the hotel provides breakfast there is generally nothing we would eat unless they have fresh fruit and we often leave the hotel before breakfast is available on check out day). We also pack healthy snacky stuff for dinner as lunch is our big meal of the day. We have been known to stop at a grocery store for frozen meals in the past to heat up for dinner.
We too pack an HDMI cable so we can stream a show before bed.
Kudos for tipping the housekeeping staff generously. I believe that if I can afford to stay in a hotel I can afford to tip generously.
