Head’s Up, Saturday is $1 Bread Day!

by Katy on April 5, 2025 · 48 comments

Franz Bakery Outlet stores currently sell their day-old(ish) bread for a buck apiece on the first Saturday of the month, which gets me off my tuchus and across town for bread! Because yeah, I’d prefer to spend $1 instead of $5!

Food prices are no joke, so this is an amazing deal, especially when you have a bit of spare freezer space.

I know very few of my readers are in my specific region, but surely you have access to non-traditional discount shopping outlets that can help corral your grocery prices. It’s at least worth a quick web search.

By the way, this is not a sponsored post, I just love a bargain! Click HERE to see if there’s a Franz Bakery outlet in your area.

I scored some $1 bread and $1 store brand English muffins. Yesterday. I drop my kid off at a day program 3X a week and the grocery store is across the street. This grocery store has great markdowns. I also freeze the extra. And I agree $1 is much better than $5!

We have 2 resources for discount groceries near me and I also say YES to dollar bread and bagels! The only time I shop the local grocery store or Aldi is for fresh foods. Groceries are insane.

Hi Katy from northern Vermont. Sadly, we have zero discount groceries here – no Aldis, no Costco (one in VT a 3 hr RT from me), not even bargain scratch and dent. Nada. Not even a Goodwill! I am always amazed, and happy for you, at your grocery finds. On the up side, we live in Vermont! 🙂 We grow as much as we can in our short season and have a freezer full of grass fed local. I am sorry for the local economy because we are pulling WAY back on our spending.

Cities and suburbs yeah. Rural areas got nothing except higher prices.

Will you be there before or after the protest?

Our local Walmart maintains a mark down rack of bakery items however mostly it’s dessert.

Not for the first time, I lament the closure of our chain of Freihofer bakery outlets throughout the Northeast US. Gone but not forgotten.

Oddly enough, I just did a Google search, and found a local brand (Klosterman’s) that has a bread outlet not far from work or home! There’s also an Aunt Millie’s bread/bakery outlet somewhat farther away, but not out of reach….AND at least one (maybe two?) Entenmann’s bakery outlets farther away (would require more of a “special trip”), which could be dangerous. My family looooooves the crumb cake, though it’s not *quite* as good as it was when Entenmann’s was a local Long Island bakery. Sigh, the crosses we have to bear. 🙂

Thanks for the nudge to search for a local bakery outlet. We don’t have Franz, but we have a Sara Lee Outlet one town south, so I’ll keep that on my radar to check out when we’re over that way. Your post reminded me also of the Too Good to Go app I started using recently, where restaurants and some grocery stores sell some of their extras or about-to-expire items. We’ve gotten great dinner meals from local Greek and Mexican restaurants, donuts at the end of the day for 1/3 the price (and that seemed perfectly fine and fresh the next morning), salads, fancy juices, baked goods and more. Most items are a “surprise bag” which can be fun if you’re not picky (and we generally aren’t!) It looks like the Portland area has a lot of participating restaurants. Worth a look?

I’ve used Too Good to Go a couple times and been unhappy with what I got. I guess I need to choose my own food, not just get random stuff.

Sadly, no Franz Bakery Outlet here in the Twin Cities. I’m not aware of any actually, so no bakery outlet shopping for me today. Nor did I join my friends at today’s Hands Off protest as I was uneasy about potential violence. Instead, my sister and I went to the library to hear a wonderful presentation on the world’s busiest wildlife rehabilitation center just miles from us. It was a bright spot during a dark time.

That sounds like the perfect alternative activity.

MB, I understand your concern re potential violence. For those who are unwilling to risk adding their calm, kind, committed-to-non-violence energy to the crowd, there are other ways to resist fascism. ParkRose Permaculture (lives one or two neighborhoods away from Katy!) and Robert Reich both have good lists, as do several other thoughtful folk.

I still have a large loaf of bread in my fridge, so no need to buy more. My best recent frugal score was 14 cent cans of store-brand soup at Aldi. I think I’ve already posted about this either here or on Frugal Girl’s blog. I let all my buddies know so they also ran over to Aldi to get the bargain price. Here’s to grilled cheese sandwiches with a bowl of tomato soup!

Sadly, none are in my state. We had a local bakery, Nissens, a few miles from where I grew up and lived at times as an adult. They had their own thrift shop. Best deals on day old bread and baked goods. People came from surrounding towns because it was worth the drive. It also smelled amazing in that neighborhood from all the bread baking.

A. Marie April 6, 2025 at 7:51 am

Christine, your memories of Nissens remind me of my own happy recollections of living near a Colonial Bread bakery in my native city (and Ruby’s current city). On days when the wind was right, the bread-baking aroma would absolutely make us drool!

Vickey April 12, 2025 at 6:45 am

I’m pretty sure one subconscious reason why we bought our first house was because there was a chocolate syrup factory around the corner, and the whole neighborhood smelled like chocolate cake baking.
Not a wise choice, in hindsight, for a now-recovering food addict.

Katy April 6, 2025 at 10:57 am

Oh yes, my Franz Outlet store is the central bakery and the entire neighborhood smells amazing!

Thanks, Katy, for the reminder about bakery outlets. We do have a Franz outlet in our area, but we are not in Oregon so I called the outlet to see if they also do a 1st Saturday $1.00 sale. The manager told me that they are currently having a Spring sale and all “day old” bread is $1.00. She said the sale will be on for another week. Whoopee! Thanks again for a timely reminder.

Our bread outlet shut down the same week the pandemic closed everything. I have missed it a lot. But Monday at Aldi is usually a great time to get their pricier breads at half off, and I stock up the freezer when that happens.

MB in MN April 5, 2025 at 12:25 pm

Ruby, thanks for the Aldi tip! We’ve recently started doing more of our shopping there, so not familiar with all their practices.

Reply

Ruby April 5, 2025 at 2:19 pm

It’s best to go very soon after they open. The discounted bread will be in the same box with regular stuff. The top rack is so high for shortypants me that I just stick my hand in it and fish around until I snag some red-stickered loaves.

A trick I read about on Reddit is that stuff will be marked down the day before the sell-by date on the package. Our Aldi does a store reset on Tuesday morning, so Monday is prime discount shopping.

Ooh . . . good tip! I wish we had Aldi here.

I bought a bag of rice at Dollar Tree and a bag of sliced frozen peppers at Dollar tree. I am cooking a chicken thigh so I guess I will put spices on all and throw teriyaki sauce on it for dinner, and at least one other meal. The chicken thigh was 79 cents a lb.

Katy April 6, 2025 at 10:55 am

Tell me what you think of those peppers. I’ve bought them in the past, but was disappointed as the contents were more onion and tiny bits of green peppers than what was on the graphic.

Nope, we don’t have any discount food outlets anywhere near me in south central Texas. No Aldi for several hundred miles, no Amish stores, no bread outlets, nothing. We have HEB (local grocery store), Walmart, dollar stores. The restaurant supply store in the nearest big city is actually more expensive than what I’d pay at the grocery store.

When I lived in the Chicago suburbs, I had quite a few options, but there’s nothing in the greater San Antonio area.

Reply

Fru-gal Lisa April 5, 2025 at 5:40 pm

Liz,
Is it just me or have you noticed that the prices at HEB seem to be increasing a lot lately?

Reply

liz April 6, 2025 at 1:27 pm

Yes, I’ve noticed that, too. I stocked up on tea because tariffs, and I was already too late for the price jump. I swear I was paying $4 a box before and now it’s up to $5 for a box of Lipton tea bags.

I’m thinking of buying meat directly from ranchers because if I have to spend eleventy-billion dollars on groceries, I’d rather it go to a local person than a big corporation. I don’t begrudge ranchers what they charge for their meat; it’s just always been more than what I could justify spending.

Reply

Katy April 6, 2025 at 10:53 am

That’s too bad. Do you have Aldi?

Reply

liz April 6, 2025 at 1:20 pm

No Aldi for a few hundred miles. It’s literally HEB, Walmart, and dollar stores. There are a few Mexican meat markets, and a local butcher shop, but those aren’t any cheaper either. Since there’s no competition, Walmart’s prices are pretty in line with HEB. Like, maybe I’d save 3 or 5 dollars shopping at Walmart, but I’d rather spend that $3 or $5 at HEB because they treat their employees better.

Oh @Katy – such a tease or “yugely” wishful thinking – the closest outlet to me is 1K+ miles/15 1/2 hour drive. We have a new local and I do mean local shop that sells bread. It is not inexpensive but the bread is fabulous. Better half purchased a Mediterranean loaf, it is to die for.
I’m all for bread that is not a contributor for type 2 diabetes.

Brisbane Australia, sadly no day old bread sales here in fact very little comparatively speaking is really marked down in comparison of what you get in the states we are fortunate having an Aldi locally but again very rare to get a markdown. I will go half a dozen weeks shopping there before I see anything marked down. They seem to have stocking to a fine art whereby it’s sold while it’s still ready to be sold, but certainly much cheaper than our other stores Coles and Woolworths. knowing many refugees was a major prompt to reduce my food waste .Once upon a time I opened the fridge door and thought “what do I feel like eating today? “ Refugee friends and their stories of starvation reminded me. I need to open the fridge door and think “what needs to be eaten today. ?” I do shop weekly specials as far as possible and ,living alone at 76, I have definitely developed the habit of cooking once, to eat three or four times.!

Two of my local Dollar Tree’s get deliveries, on different days, from the bread people. Its same as what would be at an outlet – close to “sell by date” breads, buns, bagels, English muffins, Entenmanns treats — I know what days to go and get my $1.25 worth!
