Five Frugal Things -- Lululemon & a Tumbling Stock Market

1. I stopped by the Goodwill bins and came home with two sweatshirts to sell for the $100 Goodwill Gift Card Challenge. It's funny how there seems to be a theme to what I randomly find. The brands were Lululemon and NAU, both expensive and should hopefully sell well and in a timely manner. I spent $6.70 and have $11.30 left on the card.

2. I horked a glue stick from my mother, which I used to add a few New Mexico pamphlet photos to my journal/calendar.

What does "hork" mean? It's "To borrow something with zero intention of ever returning said item." It's a useful word that we use in our family and now you can enjoy it as well!

3. I must've cut the back of this puffer seam while unpicking the corporate logo off this thrifted coat, so I pulled out my sewing supplies and got to work.

The result is far from perfect, but I promise that it looks better in person. Not sure I can sell it for much though.

4. I sold the pair of thrifted Eames-style dining chairs for $20 apiece, which is an additional $34 profit for my monthly Oregon Food Bank donation.

5. My retirement account is down $45,000, but at least it's "imaginary money" until I actually have to draw from it.

  1. Katy, I can only offer a word of wisdom from the height of 77 years, and that is” The rich get richer, by buying up when the economy is low, because they know it will come up again” History verifies it!

  2. At the current rate of inflation,
most of our $$$ appears to be imaginary unfortunately.
    1. I only had one can of fruit left and it is an outrageous $$$$ at the local grocery stores. I went to Dollar Tree today and bought canned mango for $1.50. It was the perfect size for a single gal. I also bought dish soap, and canned asparagus for $1.50.
    2. I went to Vowell’s grocery store and bought $1.00 bag of fresh spinach on sale. This grocery store will package fresh fruit and vegetables for $1.00 that is expiring. I also bought a bag of apples for my lunches for $2.70. Apples will keep and bananas are iffy sometimes. So I was really happy about the apples.
    3. I bought gas for $3.33 gallon. It really varies according to town bc in the town where I work it is $3.74.
    4. Sometimes it is frugal bc of what you do not buy. Ham is not on sale here, at least not yet, for Easter. So I will be eating baked chicken legs, asparagus, sautéed spinach, and ice cream for dessert. I have everything in my fridge or pantry. I am NOT paying $2.68 lb for ham, even though it would be my preference.
    5. I walked an hour in the local cemetery. I also lounged in my old chair in my front yard and enjoyed the sunset, my rose bushes, and birds for free. As always, I pay taxes for this joint so I am going to enjoy it!!!!

    1. When our daughter lived at home, we ate homemade pizza for every holiday at her request. Made holiday dining a lot easier. Regarding holiday meals, WHAT you eat is not important, it's WHO you spend it with that's important. I could be quite content with a pb & j sandwich for my holiday dinner as long as I'm with family and friends.

  3. 1. I got a huge bag of magnetic tiles at the thrift store for 10 dollars. I picked out some for my toddler , and then sold the rest of the lot on marketplace for 40 dollars.
    2. Went to free story time this week.
    3. Exchanged seeds with a neighbor.
    4. Shared some swim attire that my little one has outgrown, as well as a swim suit and swim shirt he hasn’t grown into yet in our BN group. We already have one in the bigger size and my kiddo is so slow growing, I was happy to share and hopefully save someone a purchase. I will attempt to dismantle capitalism , even if my endeavors are fruitless.
    5. Got marked down coffee creamer, steak, ground beef, baby wipes, and produce at king Soopers when I went to pick up my Medication. We don’t do “date nights” out with babysitters costing 30 an hour, so we splurge on steaks on occasion.

  4. 1. Saved $90 by signing up for autoship with Chewy.com for dog medications.

    2. Received 15 pages of medication info in our dog's Chewy order.  Will use the blank sides for printing documents.

    3. Opened a depressing property tax statement.  Hit with a 10% increase from last year and a whopping 40% increase from when we bought our house 2.5 years ago. I don't need to come out of retirement to pay it, but sheesh.

    4. Took a free first aid class at a nearby community center.  While there, I signed up for a free senior membership ($565 annual value) that includes free fitness classes, which my own community center offers for $10/session.  The nearby community center is just down the road from one of my volunteer gigs so I will maximize mileage.

    5. Filled car with gas at the half-full mark in anticipation of more ridiculous and greedy price increases.  Price was $3.80/gallon and then I used the 10 cents off discount card that I received from a car dealership when I purchased a used car three years ago.

P.S. Will be at my first No Kings March on Saturday! It seems like we're served a steaming pile of s**t every single day.

  5. Between student bus stops yesterday, I had to make an "emergency pit stop" at Sheetz (convenient store chain) to use the restroom. I took the van key with me and left my purse locked inside the van so I would not "yield into temptation" and purchase a snack. There were no students on the van at that time.

  6. I mowed my lawns around the house, the orchard and the grass in front of the barns. Clippings went into the compost.
I took a bouquet of daffodils to the back door neighbor. We took a couple of her elderly horses for a walk through the woods. Exercised the horses and had a good visit.
Lululemon jacket is super cute. in my family, hork is akin to vomit. As in "the cat just horked a hairball". Mooch for food and he's a cadgerous letch for someone who borrows with no intention of paying back or returning item. Usually only getting that awful title after borrowing more than once. Fool me once...yadda yadda.
