Four Frugal Things — WE ALL VOTED!

1) I hopped on over to the library to drop off my daughter’s ballot. She was out of town until last night and there was no way I’d let either of my kids flake out on their civic duty!
I have a somewhat relaxed parenting style, except when it comes to voting and staying up to date on vaccinations. I will bully you!

I then returned my most recent reads. By they way, both these books earn five-stars from me!

I then checked out two new books!

I think I’ll start with Kristen Hannah’s The Nightingale, which I anticipate enjoying as her other books have been some of my favorites.

2) My daughter returned home sick from her travels, so we tucked her into her childhood bedroom to enjoy some bespoke health care. This includes homemade soup and tea on demand.

I poured the soup into my crockpot and set it for “Keep Warm.” This ain’t my first rodeo!

3) My husband pulled his mother’s and grandmother’s sewing machines from the basement. We were able to find someone from the Buy Nothing group to take the standalone Singer, but no one seems to want to the end table one.

The grandmother’s machine in terrible condition, which is a shame as I know that she took excellent care of it during her lifetime. She taught high school home economics and took great pride in her home.

It really is a shame.

I got to know “Peg” in her later years and always enjoyed our chats.

4) I stopped into Trader Joe’s to grab bananas, plus ice cream to soothe my daughter’s poor throat. I can’t say that I walked out without any impulse items, but I did keep it to a frozen gluten-free pizza, mozzarella cheese and baby carrots.
Really not that bad considering Trader Joe’s is 82.4% impulse items.
I did score a half dozen or so free lollipops from the cashier, which fulfills the “You must leave Trader Joe’s with a sweet treat” contract.
Now your turn, what frugal things have you been up to?

I loved both of those books, too, Katy! Moving to San Francisco in 2004, after growing up in Texas and in the wake of the dot-com bust, gave me a different lens through which to view What Kind of Paradise. I’ve recommended the book many times since and would love to hear your thoughts on it.
I hope the caregiving eases your daughter’s pain quickly. 🙂
I went in blind, which is always my favorite way to read a book. So much better than I would’ve expected considering the premise. Six starts out of five!
You are a good momma!
I did early voting, I researched until I felt like my eyes were crossed! But I wanted answers not “puff-speak”.
Laundry done and dried outside, leftovers for lunch and supplies assembled for soup making tomorrow, chicken and broth from earlier roasted thigh quarters, broth from the resulting bones and veggies from the fridge along with wild rice mix.
Garlic breadsticks will be made for serving with soup.
I am home for the month for the most part and trying to move leaves.

The Nightingale is my favorite of Kristin Hanna’s books. I met her once — years ago — she was on a book tour, and I’m sorry to say I can’t remember which book she was promoting. But she gave an interesting talk, and what sticks with me is how disciplined she is with her writing — she said her law degree gave her a good work ethic.
I went to the doctor today — not my own doctor, because he’s on vacation — but a partner. I had my blood pressure checked, because it has risen lately. She prescribed a low-dose prescription. I’m not wild about another prescription, but we’ll see how it goes. At least it’s fairly inexpensive.
Since I was out, I went to the bank to set up bill pay for my condo assessment fees. We have a new property management company, and I am having trouble with their billing. I mailed a check more than a week ago for this month’s fee, and it hasn’t been cashed. I called the PM company, and they verified they didn’t receive it. I was advised to give it a few days because mail has been slow, but I suspect I will be putting a stop payment on it.
The banker who helped me with bill pay said she recommended never mailing a check — she’s seen too much fraud.
I was out past lunch time, so I stopped at a local bagel shop and ordered a bagel with cream cheese, tomato, cucumber and spinach. Shopped local, and had at least a little fiber.
Don’t even want to look at the news. I’ve been broken-hearted too many times these past years.
