I have occasionally been doing a gratitude list through my Twitter account, and it has been a worthy exercise. But what I really like to do is make lists of what makes me happy. What’s the difference? Well . . . I am grateful for the health of my family members, but I am happy that dinner was completed and even cleaned up by 6:00 P.M. tonight. Sometimes the two intersect, but sometimes they are miles apart.
Today’s Happiness List
- The Cookie Monster cupcakes that I made for my son’s birthday party yesterday were so cute, yet were a total last minute endeavor. Huge hit. Huge!
- I get to watch three full hours of Lost and Lost related hype tonight. Hurley, Sun, Jack, Sawyer, Jin, Charlie, Desmond, Kate, Claire and everyone else. ♥ Lost.
- The arcade that I took my son’s birthday guests to let us all in for free, all eleven of us. Saved us $27.50!
- Found two nickels on the ground at the arcade.
- My neighbor brought me a beautiful rose from her garden.
Happy. What’s your five?

1) Belly laughing with my kids – they’re hoots.
2) Picking something (food or flower) from my garden – yeah the thumb’s pretty black on a normal day.
3) Helping a kid – any kid – any age – any way
4) Spinning on my deck with my dogs nearby
5) Road trips with friends
Thank you so much! I really needed this today. I’ve been focusing too hard on things that are irritating me. Reality check:
1) Wearing my favorite blue suede shoes
2) It’s my husband’s turn to cook dinner tonight! (thankfully, not rare)
3) Two cups of coffee on a weekday morning
4) Good hair days (unfortunately, rare)
5) Cloud cover!
1. Being barefoot
2. Animal companions
3. Wearing my homemade denim apron with the big pocket
4. Waking earlier than anybody else and having quiet time alone
5. Strong iced tea brewed by the sun
After twenty four hours of thinking about this post, I think this is one of the most enlightened posts I have read. I have worked at gratitude lists for awhile. It is a lot of work for me. The last attempt was to say why I was grateful for something – and it nearly always was because it made me happy. Thinking of things that make me happy also becomes cumulative – the more I think about what made me happen, the more things I think of that make me happy. It is like compound interest! LOL Thinking of my day and picking out things that made me happy becomes a joyous and happy exercise in gratitude. Much better. Thank you Katy.
Today – my five
1. My husbands jokes

1. Son and I were first in line at the pediatrician’s early morning walk in hours. He has strep but hey, we are insured thank goodness, and he’s feeling much better.
2. Watching my boys play for two hours with their dad’s giant old box of tiny Legos.
3. The free sample of All-Bran crunchy things were perfect on my afternoon yogurt snack.
4. There is a nest of three baby robins in a bush in our yard, and I like to go out each day and watch them sleep while mama robin is out getting them some grub.
5. My brother in law is bringing City Barbecue for dinner, with peach cobbler for dessert for tv night. Yummo!
KATY! I NEED to know how to make those cupcakes! It is my cousin’s birthday today and although she’s in her late 20s, her nickname in my family is Cookie! And it’s from the Cookie Monster. Could you email me with how you did that? I’m not going to see her until next week, but if I surprised her with those, I think I will be her favorite person forever. 🙂
1. An unexpected coupon in the mail for a free 32 oz fountain drink, and 5 cents off per gallon of gas. I waited until my tank was nearly empty. And that soda, man, it was huge. I enjoyed every sip.
2. While I was pumping my 5-cents-off gas, I found a penny on the ground.
3. Sun and wind on my laundry.
4. Knitting.
5. The upcoming holiday weekend. (Memorial Day)
