February 12, 2009 had the very special distinction of being Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday. Of course he didn’t get to stick around to enjoy the festivities, but it’s still a momentous day nonetheless.
Abraham Lincoln is famous for so many things — rising to the presidency from his humble Kentucky log cabin beginnings, his bold anti-slavery stance and his tragic and untimely death.
But Abraham Lincoln’s most current claim to fame is the issue of four different commemorative pennies celebrating the man easily recognized as America’s greatest past president.
I’m very excited about these pennies, as I am a huge fan of the humble penny. I feel that pennies are just as important as dollars, if not more so.
As we value the small things in life, the big ones just fall into place.
So happy birthday Honest Abe! I look forward to many more years of picking up your coins from sidewalks, floors and streets. (Hey, I gotta have something to pay my library fines!)

And if you’re looking for a great Abraham Lincoln-theme evening out in the great city of Portland, Oregon, my father Tony Wolk is having a reading of his newest Lincoln Out of Time novel, “Lincoln’s Daughter” at the Hawthorne Powell’s bookstore on Monday, February 16th at 7:30 P.M.
Here’s a link.
See you there!
