I Hope We Didn’t Need That Old Map of Portland

It turns out that old and stained coasters look mighty fine when Mod-Podged with a map of Portland. Do you like how the previous pattern was Japanese?

I love these – I have a love of travel and these are cool. I may have to try this with some old tiles.

Isn’t it ironic …! They look good.

They are gorgeous! Still thinking about what to bring as gifts. How about “local” tea? Artisans in the U.S. are doing interesting things with tisanes, herbal teas, etc.. Another thought, our recent French exchange student brought the ingredients and recipe along to bake some white chocolate muffins. (turns out that in France, vanilla is a powder, not a liquid!). When my daughter traveled to Spain, near the holidays she baked her great- grandmother’s sugar cookie recipe for her host family – and they ate them for breakfast! (Cookies for breakfast is very common in Spain…..and when you think about it,it makes just as much sense as pancakes, donuts or sweet rolls). Perhaps bringing recipe and ingredients you might not be able to find in Japan would be a fun activity and treat for your host family.

I love these. I was planning to make some for Christmas gifts. Where did you get the coasters or are they tiles? Thanks.

The coasters were something I bought 18-ish years ago in Albuquerque. But they’re just the cork on the bottom, laminated paper on the top that you see everywhere.

Thanks. I’ll be on the lookout for some cork. I have a replica of an old map of New Orleans and want to make coasters for my son and his wife for Christmas.

I really like these. I am new to the blog, could you please explain how the school trips to Japan came to be? Is this a “sister city” situation?

No. My kids have been in a public school Japanese language immersion program since kindergarten.

Sorry about the “mis-post” – losing my mind. Great coasters! I think I may tray as Christmas gifts. I’m not very crafty but think even I may be able to handle these. Wonderful idea for a host gift, even when traveling within the U.S.

So these are not really the ceramic tiles sold as coasters? Just cork and cardboard? Or, is there a tile in the middle? Sorry to be so dense.

There is some kind of firm layer, but I don’t know what it is. The idea is to use some already made coasters.
