Jewels on Loan and Some Thrifty Goodness

I just dropped my sister Jessica at the airport, and although her visit to Portland from New York was rather whirlwind, we jam packed it with hearty goodness. And you know whenever Wolk-Stanley sisters congregate, there will be nifty thrifty goodness.

Vintage maps from The pay-by-the-pound Goodwill outlet. (Maybe 25¢?)

A nice lined basket from a regular Goodwill thrift shop. $2.99

An American Girl Mia Bedroom Set from 2008. My cost was $7.99. Amazon is selling a new one for $399.00! (I’ll sell mine on Craigslist for $50 or so.)

Canning jars for 25¢ apiece.

And a loaner tiara for free. Because all the important celebrities get their jewelry loaned to them for red carpet events.

I love my sister and I love thrift stores. But combine the two and I am in heaven.

Can you tell? 😉

Awesome basket. Jealous of that one.

The canning jars at our Goodwill are $0.99 each – regardless of size. Great bargain you got.

In the Seattle area they are just 20 cents.

99 cents is almost retail or even more. I carry a sales circular with me showing retail prices. Once in a while I can convince thrift stores their prices are too high. When I can’t I leave the jars for others to purchase.

I use a basket like that in my kitchen as a hamper for all the dish towels, cloth napkins, and cleaning cloths. It’s really handy to have a small hamper to toss that stuff into.

A fun trip with your sister and a find that will net you money? That’s a thrifty fun time.

Lucky you for finding that American Girl bedroom set. Depending on the condition, you could possibly get more than that. Really. You HAVE to write about your mother. You said that she was going back to school, for either a Masters or a PhD. Which is it, and she just turned 70? Wow, what a lady!

I L-O-V-E Goodwill! We just moved and I’m itching to find one here in Anchorage. I haven’t seen one yet, but I have seen a thousand other thrift stores. I wish I could find some American Girl awesomeness like that!

Great finds Katy! I would have loved to find that American Girl bedroom set! It would be a great present for my American Girl loving girls. Someday I will find something like that. For now I will settle with the great books I have been finding.

I never understand finding new or like-new baskets at thrift stores and yard sales, I mean who doesn’t use baskets? There are so many uses for them that I can’t see why anyone would give them away!

I am always amazed not just that you buy stuff to sell, but that you know what items have a high retail value and also a high resale value. For example, I would have walked past that doll furniture thinking nah, not for my kids and kinda ugly anyway. I find that being a non-consumerist without a TV I have few references as to what other people will pay money for. I go to lots of thriftstores and if I knew what had value I might buy and resell, but most things I probably miss.

So my question for you is: How do you keep up with current trends to know what you can sell for above your thrift store purchase price? Share your secrets!

I would check ebay for selling the american girl set, you could get more than $50, but then you do have to deal with shipping. What a find!
