No, it’s Not “Time to Stand!”

by Katy on September 28, 2025 · 77 comments

Edit: Thank you to everyone for your kind words. My husband is doing a bit better, moving slowly but independently.

We’ve had a bit of a hiccup here at casa Wolk-Stanley, as my husband was hit by a car while cycling to work. (The driver went through a stop sign.) He’s pretty banged up with four fractured ribs, but it could’ve been much much worse! Seriously.

He’s now back from the hospital and we’re very gently caring for him.

Please enjoy that his watch kept telling him that it was “Time to Stand!” which it most definitely was not!

So please excuse me if my “frugal things” are bit less adventurous than normal.

Sending my best wishes to Mr. NCA! I hope he feels better soon. <3

And I sincerely hope that driver never runs another stop sign in their lifetime!!!

He was appropriately horrified and called 911 and helped until the ambulance took him to the hospital.

I add my distress and best wishes for Mr. NCA and all of you to Kristen’s and everyone else’s.

But I must confess that despite the driver’s being “appropriately horrified” and so on, I myself would be thinking about contacting my lawyer. The guy did commit a moving violation that may put Mr. NCA out of work for several weeks, given Mr. NCA’s job as an EMT.

Driver’s first call must be to his insurance agent.

Oh no Katy, I’m so sorry to hear this!! That is so scary. I’m glad your husband got good medical care after the accident and is now able to be back home after this ordeal where he can heal. I hope it will be a smooth recovery for him. Sending much love, many prayers, and gentle healing vibes to your husband!

Oh my gosh- so sorry to hear this news but glad he is home and beginning to heal. Ouch – nothing much to be done for ribs than wait it out and be careful with moving around in the meantime. Glad you still have a sense of humor. Take care.

Sending you both good wishes. Yes, the worst cases are MUCH worse. Car drivers, bikers, pedestrians and those who use wheels of all sorts, REALLY need to FOLLOW THE ROAD RULES!!!! ALL OF THEM NEED TO FOLLOW THE RULES BECAUSE THAT KEEPS EVERYONE SAFER. It sadly seems to be a trend in this county to not follow the law as many think they are above it or special and it does not apply to them.
Trust the driver was suitably horrified and responsible for consequences of their behavior and had really good insurance.
Hoping the healing goes well for everyone’s sake. Be sure to take care of yourself during this time as well as husband. The carer so often overdoes and pays a price. Glad your children are relatively close geographically and let your friends/neighbors share kindnesses. HUGE SUPPORT TO YOU ALL.

OMG Katy! I am so sorry to hear of your DH’s accident, but I’m glad it wasn’t any worse. I hope he makes a speedy, complete and pain-free recovery. Will be praying for same. Please know you, your neighbors and family, James Comey and everyone in Portland and Memphis are in my prayers, too, as I have been alarmed at seeing the news about Felon 34 sending troops to your (and Elvis’s) fair cities… and also the news about him arresting his political enemies. (If the orange madman truly wants to end crime, why did he pardon all those criminals in the infamous Jan. 6 insurrection?) Please be careful!
Next year is the 250th anniversary of the USA, but I’m not real sure we’ll have our free democratic government still functioning. It may have ended on Jan. 20 of this year when President Biden left office.
I think my Halloween decoration will be a big sign saying there’s nothing as scary as Trump in the White House.

I am so sorry to hear about your husband’s trauma. It is very serious. Something to watch for are any signs of pneumonia which can be a result of broken ribs. The broken ribs are painful which can cause shallow breathing which can lead to pneumonia. Of course, I am writing this to a medical professional, but it is because I am concerned. I am sure with your good care he will have an uneventful recovery.

Oh my gosh! So glad it wasn’t worse, and very glad to hear he’s home and being given the best of care. Also, good for the driver actually staying put and taking responsibility. 10 to 1 odds that driver was on his phone. I see so many drivers checking their phones while I’m waiting to cross roads.

Yes, it could have been much worse. My nephew was in a motorcycle accident last year and now has more hardware in him than a hardware store. He said if it weren’t for Alabama’s “Helmet Law, ” he’d be dead. Ironic that bicyclists are required to wear helmets and motorcyclists are not (in some states). Pennsylvania repealed it’s helmet law years ago. Dumbest thing ever done that the Orange Ogre didn’t initiate.

Guessing from what someone said, your DH is a paramedic? If so, spouses working/have worked in healthcare can be difficult with each other. Good luck, Nurse Katy and speedy recovery for your DH.

Reply

Liz B. September 28, 2025 at 12:43 pm

Melissa N,
Not sure what the helmet laws are in Indiana, but my DH lost his bff in a motorcycle accident (bff was wearing a helmet, and got hit by someone in a car….not sure of the details, but the car driver was at fault). Dont get me wrong, helmets should be mandatory both for bicylists and motorcyclists.

Reply

Melissa N September 29, 2025 at 9:13 am

Agreed. Not just for motorcycles and bicycles either. Scooters are causing problems in our area as they aren’t “street legal.” They’re supposed to be used on.the sidewalk.

Read this post and cringed. So sorry Mr. NCA is hurt. Broken ribs are excruciating. Portland is a bike city! Crazy.
Thinking good thoughts for both of you. When my dad broke his ribs, we found that a gait belt around his hips very helpful to keep him steady getting in and out of his favorite chair.
Lost a sweet friend/co-worker a few years ago as he biked the back roads and a 16 yo kid ran a stop sign and instantly killed him.
So glad hubby is home and in your care.

Ouch! I’m sorry that happened, and I’m happy it wasn’t worse. There must be something in the water, because I almost got in a wreck yesterday, when someone ran a red light. I was on my way home from the grocery store, and I slammed on the brakes so hard that some of my groceries flew forward and slammed into the windshield! I barely missed hitting the guy, who kept going after giving me a dirty look! Ugh! I’m so sick of people regarding stop signs and red lights as “suggestions”.

While fractured ribs are no walk in the park at least other bones weren’t fractured. Having employer based medical insurance plays in his/your favor as does your nursing knowledge. Do keep track of any OOP medical costs (your insurer will be keeping track of what it pays) as well as any lost wages. I don’t expect you’re looking to get rich off the misfortune but you should not incur any costs.
Don’t exhaust yourself – okay to order take out or do semi-homemade. If you guys have an infrequent hankering for a Big Mac meal, you’re in luck – $8 extra value meal lol.

Jen September 28, 2025 at 9:23 pm

So sorry about the accident. That is terrifying. Broken ribs are no fun at all. This sucks, but he will heal in time. Treat yourselves to some takeout and a pedicure or something for you, the Care Taker. This is the type of thing you save money for.

The “Time to Stand” alert on the iWatch is soooo annoying! I don’t know how to turn it off. But if I ever get a rare chance to chill out, it is an annoying nag!
