No, it’s Not “Time to Stand!”

by Katy on September 28, 2025 · 31 comments

We’ve had a bit of a hiccup here at casa Wolk-Stanley, as my husband was hit by a car while cycling to work. (The driver went through a stop sign.) He’s pretty banged up with four fractured ribs, but it could’ve been much much worse! Seriously.

He’s now back from the hospital and we’re very gently caring for him.

Please enjoy that his watch kept telling him that it was “Time to Stand!” which it most definitely was not!

So please excuse me if my “frugal things” are bit less adventurous than normal.

Sending my best wishes to Mr. NCA! I hope he feels better soon. <3

And I sincerely hope that driver never runs another stop sign in their lifetime!!!

He was appropriately horrified and called 911 and helped until the ambulance took him to the hospital.

I add my distress and best wishes for Mr. NCA and all of you to Kristen’s and everyone else’s.

But I must confess that despite the driver’s being “appropriately horrified” and so on, I myself would be thinking about contacting my lawyer. The guy did commit a moving violation that may put Mr. NCA out of work for several weeks, given Mr. NCA’s job as an EMT.

OMG! How scary. I’m so so glad it wasn’t worse but still broken ribs are no joke. I hope they gave him some good pain meds!

So sorry to read about the accident. Wishing g your beloved an uneventful recovery. Paramedics don’t always make the best patients, so please remind him rib fractures take time and rest to heal!

Oh my gosh- so sorry to hear this news but glad he is home and beginning to heal. Ouch – nothing much to be done for ribs than wait it out and be careful with moving around in the meantime. Glad you still have a sense of humor. Take care.

Sending you both good wishes. Yes, the worst cases are MUCH worse. Car drivers, bikers, pedestrians and those who use wheels of all sorts, REALLY need to FOLLOW THE ROAD RULES!!!! ALL OF THEM NEED TO FOLLOW THE RULES BECAUSE THAT KEEPS EVERYONE SAFER. It sadly seems to be a trend in this county to not follow the law as many think they are above it or special and it does not apply to them.
Trust the driver was suitably horrified and responsible for consequences of their behavior and had really good insurance.
Hoping the healing goes well for everyone’s sake. Be sure to take care of yourself during this time as well as husband. The carer so often overdoes and pays a price. Glad your children are relatively close geographically and let your friends/neighbors share kindnesses. HUGE SUPPORT TO YOU ALL.

OMG Katy! I am so sorry to hear of your DH’s accident, but I’m glad it wasn’t any worse. I hope he makes a speedy, complete and pain-free recovery. Will be praying for same. Please know you, your neighbors and family, James Comey and everyone in Portland and Memphis are in my prayers, too, as I have been alarmed at seeing the news about Felon 34 sending troops to your (and Elvis’s) fair cities… and also the news about him arresting his political enemies. (If the orange madman truly wants to end crime, why did he pardon all those criminals in the infamous Jan. 6 insurrection?) Please be careful!
Next year is the 250th anniversary of the USA, but I’m not real sure we’ll have our free democratic government still functioning. It may have ended on Jan. 20 of this year when President Biden left office.
I think my Halloween decoration will be a big sign saying there’s nothing as scary as Trump in the White House.

I am so sorry to hear about your husband’s trauma. It is very serious. Something to watch for are any signs of pneumonia which can be a result of broken ribs. The broken ribs are painful which can cause shallow breathing which can lead to pneumonia. Of course, I am writing this to a medical professional, but it is because I am concerned. I am sure with your good care he will have an uneventful recovery.

It would be a bit peculiar if you were still managing the same level of frugal adventures after this accident. Here’s hoping for a fast and complete recovery.

So sorry for Mr. NCA, and sending good thoughts for a quick recovery. And, we are definitely frugal the majority of the time, so we can afford to splurge & not worry about it during those (hopefully rare) emergencies.

Oh, so sorry to hear this. Keeping him and you in our prayers and sending wishes for a speedy recovery. Yes – people drive CRAZY anymore. Go through stop signs and red lights….I always wait a few seconds because you are never sure if people are going to stop. Hope he is up and around and completely recovered soon!

Oh my gosh! So glad it wasn’t worse, and very glad to hear he’s home and being given the best of care. Also, good for the driver actually staying put and taking responsibility. 10 to 1 odds that driver was on his phone. I see so many drivers checking their phones while I’m waiting to cross roads.

Speedy healing vibes and prayers to your husband!

Katy,
As all your commenters have expressed, we will live without your frugal adventures while you tend to the man that needs to ignore the Time to Stand promptings from his smart watch. I hope he makes a good recovery without any setbacks. He is lucky to have you as he deals with this.

Long time lurker, first time poster. All of my sympathies go to you & your husband. I was hit by a red-light-running driver speeding in the rain last year while in a crosswalk. I know how traumatic it can be. I’m glad his injuries were relatively minor!

Take care of yourselves and don’t worry about us. We’ll be here when you’re ready & able to come back.

Yes, it could have been much worse. My nephew was in a motorcycle accident last year and now has more hardware in him than a hardware store. He said if it weren’t for Alabama’s “Helmet Law, ” he’d be dead. Ironic that bicyclists are required to wear helmets and motorcyclists are not (in some states). Pennsylvania repealed it’s helmet law years ago. Dumbest thing ever done that the Orange Ogre didn’t initiate.

Guessing from what someone said, your DH is a paramedic? If so, spouses working/have worked in healthcare can be difficult with each other. Good luck, Nurse Katy and speedy recovery for your DH.
