Non-Consumer Photo Essay — Frugal Fun with The Cullens, Han Solo, Chelsea, John and Sherry

by Katy on February 23, 2012 · 15 comments

My friend Chelsea and I spent yesterday together. First we went for walk and then a nice, frugal lunch. (My share was $5)

Our walk included an historic pioneer cemetery:

Cullen? This is for all you closeted "Twilight" fans out there.

This tombstone may actually be grumpy pioneers encased in Carbonite.

See? It's the same thing!

We then drove on over to the Portland Home and Garden Show ostensibly to peruse the wares, but pretty much just to hear John and Sherry of  Young House Love. (Chelsea is a huge fan, and recently introduced me to their blog.)

Katy, Chelsea, Sherry and John. At the end of a looong day, which may (or more likely not) excuse the goofiness. If you look to the right of this photo, you can see that we're in a ginormous convention center space, not a cozy bedroom.

So how was it frugal to go to a paid admission event? Well . . . I had some credit on my Groupon account, so I was able to get free tickets! Which then justified paying $8 to park the car. (I didn’t want to be taking public transport at night. In the rain.)

There are infinite ways to have fun outside of the mall. Better fun, goofier fun, more memorable fun.

Looks like you had a wonderful day! I found Young House Love by accident several months ago and just love them. They are so very creative and such a cute couple.

Katy, you don’t have to justify every expenditure to us. Anyone who saves money by using a menstrual cup, (I know, you’re a nurse) deserves to spend money on any fun thing they want. By the way, I don’t know what part of Portand you live in, but if you can drop by School House Electric some day that would be nice. One of my young friends has opened a flower shop in the same building. She opened her business in November or December when she was 8 months pregnant. Anna Mara Flowers. There is a coffee shop in the building also. Ann W (from Connecticut)

Not justifying every expenditure, just trying to keep this blog post on topic. 🙂

And I’ll have to try your friend’s flower shop some time!

I love this:

Anyone who saves money by using a menstrual cup, (I know, you’re a nurse) deserves to spend money on any fun thing they want.

Reminds me that sometimes it’s good to let myself off the hook. Whether it’s the menstrual cup, cloth diapers, taking public transportation… whatever.

I was late to the party on discovering Twilight! My girlfriends told me a couple of years back to read the book/watch the film. ‘Yardy, dardy, dah! Whatever!’ was my reply, I was having none of it – vampire book written for teenagers? – no thanks, ignorantly believing I wouldn’t enjoy it as my raging pubescent hormones are way past their use-by-date .
I shall pay heed next time, and certainly more open-minded! So really appreciating the photo! Within 8 days I’ve watched the first 3 films and read the 1st book. So not so much closet, more converted.
In fact maybe a little obsessed? My last post How Twilight Turned Me Vegetarian included a photo I took of the delectable Edward Cullen next to a butternut squash (well it amused me, who wouldn’t want to see a photo of R-Patz next to a vegetable?!).
Have a super weekend! Jo

Too funny! You do know that Forks is pretty close to Portland, and that many scenes from the first movie were shot in and around Portland.

I didn’t know that…It look’s a fantastic place, with rather a British climate might I add! Unless all the rain was CGI?

I highly doubt the rain is CGI. Also, I think all the movies are shot in British Columbia, Canada now anyway.

I didn’t realise how close Portland is to BC. I visited BC 8 years ago – it was such a beautiful place. The cleanest airport I have ever been in! Oh and Andrew McCarthy (Pretty in Pink fame) was behind me at check in. You live in a beautiful part of the world. In fact it’s just set me off on a Google trail. Twilight reminded me a lot of Twin Peaks (yes old enough to remember it!). Looks as though it may be a similar part of the US, but the US is so vast that is could be much further than I imagine. Living in the middle of a tiny island (aka the UK) I can reach the north and south in approx. the same time about 6 hours. My point of reference is therefore slightly out of kilter.

Both Twilight and Twin Peaks were both set in Washington state. Although Twin Peaks was actually shot 100% there.

BTW, I love my “Make Do and Mend” coaster, and use it every day and think of you!

I went back to the place (restored Victorian town) I originally saw it last week, and thought of you also. It was almost 12 months to the day I’d been there last. So that must make it nearly your coaster’s one-year anniversary!
In fact today I clicked on a blog and say the same motto in cross stitch hanging on a wall.. I’d say it’s pretty much synonimous to me with Katy the NCA.
Thanks for the heads up on Twin Peaks!

I loved Twin Peaks! Although it was pretty pointless after they revealed Laura Palmer’s killer.

Agree…but worth watching for ‘The Log Lady’ alone…
