Non-Consumer Photo Essay -- Propagating a Prayer Plant

Today's blog post is a little less wordy and a lot more photographic. Nothing news worthy, but still very nonconsumer-y.

My backyard hydrangeas are going gangbusters this year, thanks to a combination of regular precipitation and minimal heat waves. I planted them with my father 28 years ago when I was on maternity leave with my youngest kiddo. He did most of the work as toddler + newborn = zero hands for landscaping projects.

The second photo is to demonstrate that I didn't cherry pick the only area that's thriving.

I brought a bouquet to my mother just yesterday.

I donated a milk crate to the Lincoln City Goodwill a couple months back, as fitting six Broyhill Brasilia chairs into the back of the car left no room for anything whatsoever. These dull, yet necessary items (jumper cables, car jack, battery charger) have been bouncing around the back of the car ever since.

That was, until I was rummaging around our attic and came across the above specimen. Sure it was dusty, but a hose and an afternoon of sunshine took care of that issue.

Now everything is satisfyingly corralled once again. Ahh . . . .

My little free library is properly stocked, thanks to the books I grabbed from garage sale free piles. Although I'm now out of back stock.

I toss silica packs into the library whenever they arrive in random packages. I figure they help to keep the books from getting moist, which is a problem here in Portland nine months out of the year.

I started this prayer plant from a cutting, but she wasn't looking her best due to some yellowed leaves and crispy bits.

Nothing that kitchen scissors and focused attention can't fix.

Of course I'm now propagating a new batch of prayer plants. Don't want to be wasteful! I don't mean to brag, (yes I do!) but I garbage picked all these used sake glasses.

There, that looks better!

I'm giving both the shower curtain and plastic liner a spa day. Mold and mildew never take a day off here in Portland! I probably bought the liner ten years ago and my goal is to make it last as long as possible.

Just because something is designed to be disposable doesn't mean you can't subvert that intent.

I stopped by my youngest's apartment yesterday to hang out, but mostly to play with their kitten "Myrr." She's the absolute cutest kitty and does the sweetest mini "hiss" when Mama's Little Meatball gets too close.

Luckily Meatball is chill and doesn't return any angry sentiments.

Do you remember when I painted that thrifted stool in 2013 to look like a Portland Timbers scarf? It's still in use as a bedside table!

Mama's Little Meatball is going to be an excellent big sister.

  1. Your little Meatball looks so much like my mother's cat, Rascal. Both have been gone about 30 years now. But it's nice to see another "silwy cat" with such thick, pretty tortoise shell fur.
I'm halfway through my "Nobody's Girl" book and it has been really intense. Will be glad to finish it and return it to the library.
New haircut place opened in the neighborhood and I got an $8 cut. Don't care what it looks like, just wanted my thick hair gone. It felt like I was wearing a winter hat with all that hair. Much better now that it is shorter
While out, I had a carwash pass, so I took the car through the drive through carwash. With our hot weather, it dried in record time.
Put out the Democrat campaign signs in the front yard last night. Some neighbors are having an estate sale so lots of folks will see the signs.
It was so hot, I was forced to turn down the AC and set up 2 more electric fans in my bedroom. Just so I could sleep. We're supposed to have a cool front in a few days, where the highs will "only" be in the upper 80s. It's been 100 the past two days.
Hope you all are staying cool!

  2. Your hydrangeas and prayer plant are both beautiful.

I'm having an off-day -- poor sleep, poor digestion, too much humidity, aching joints -- perfect storm for the blahs. So I'm not getting a lot done. Hoping that tomorrow is a better day.

I've been watching Little House on the Prairie, which is more interesting to me than the TV show was. I find that since I cut cable I've been making better use of my Netflix subscription, which I share with my son's family. I do miss Jeopardy.

And I've been reading. I have finished my last library book, and I'm ready to start on one of the LFL books.

I've promised to water plants for a traveling neighbor. Thank goodness I only have to step out on the landing to do it.
