Spoiler Alert — Library Book Spied In The "Sex And The City" Movie!

If there’s a single TV show that’s pays homage to the fashionista culture of shop-till-you drop, it’s “Sex and the City.”

Fabulous apartments, sumptuous designer clothing, gourmet restaurant meals, and the shoes, oh my god — the shoes! The episode where Carrie realizes that she’s spent $40,000 on shoes and doesn’t have enough money to buy her apartment is a classic example.

But I don’t watch “Sex and the City” for frugality tips. I watch it because it’s smartly written, has great characters, and is just plain fun.

And no, I don’t have cable TV. I get the DVD’s from the library.

I was snuggled under my down comforter this afternoon, enjoying the guilty pleasure of my long awaited library copy of the Sex and the City movie.

Carrie with new shoes.

Check.

Carrie eating in yet another hip restaurant with the girls.

Check.

Carrie laying in bed with Mr. Big, enjoying a fine library book.

What the . . . .

You read that right. A library book.

She goes so far as to defend her literary choice, making Mr. Big sniff the book so he can appreciate, “the smell of a library book.”

So I may not have a collection of to-die-for stiletto heels, or even a different designer outfit for each day of the week. But I learned that I do have one thing in common with Miss Carrie Bradshaw.

An appreciation of the perfect to-die-for library book.

So I guess I’m a fashionista after all.

I’m sorry to have to tell you this but I think that this TV show is so stupid that I wonder how come it’s such a big success. I’m king of fed up with shows that reduce women to shopping idiots…. How can we have our teenage girls to be happy with their self-image and get them to accept having second hand clothes when they see women choosing Mr. Right on what kind of car they drive, what appartment they live in…. I’m even more concerned about shows like New York housewives!
How more stupid will it get? No wonder I watch more PBS and food network. I think it’s time to wake up America and take a look around you.
I’m sorry Katy, I had to say that…

Funny story, but after the movie came out, libraries reported that women actually started calling looking for the book that Carrie was reading in the movie. The book doesn’t actually exist, there is a similar book, which shot up the Amazon best seller list.

Excellent post! As a librarian I’m a bit biased, but it’s so true that there is no better value than your local public library. My local library checks out laptops in addition to books. It’s a hip place to be these days.

Katy, I’m with you…I think Sex and the City is well-written, smart, and fun. I don’t think any of the characters chose her partner based on what kind of car he drove or where he lived. And as a former full-time library worker, I was delighted to see a plug for library books! Libraries rock, and besides their value in the frugality sphere, they play an essential role in providing access to information for everybody. Your mild-mannered librarian is on the forefront of the fight against censorship and thought control. Knowledge is power! Long live libraries! (end rant)
