The Non-Consumer Advocate Neighborhood/ Block Potluck Challenge

Non-Consumer Advocate Neighborhood/Block Potluck Challenge:

Host a neighborhood or block potluck in the next two weeks in your home. This is not an opportunity to show off your elegant and perfect home, it’s an opportunity to get to know your neighbors a little better and enjoy one another’s company. (So don’t worry about having your house being Martha Stewart perfect.) Points will be deducted for elaborate gourmet food .

Because community is not just for summer months.

I will do the same at my house, and maybe even incorporate a book swap.

At this time, I don’t have the time to organize a potluck in the next two week. But at the same time, I am going to participate in our community yard sale in a couple of weeks. The neighbor kids are going to use my garage as a lunch stand. The village will be closing the main street to traffic, so everyone will have to walk (for safety). For a little village this is a very big event. We will be seeing all the neighbors and people in the surrounding area.

I was reading real simple magazine this morning and they suggested having a stuff swap with your friends or neighbors. Have everyone bring a few items they want to get rid of. Each person can then select up to the number of items they brought. The remaining items are donated to charity. I love this idea. I’m going to start planning one after tax season is over.

Mine might look more like a BYOB party at my apartment. But I’ve already started meeting some of my neighbors, I would love for them to swing by and just mingle with them.

I’m in for sometime this summer–May or June. My folks are visiting for Easter this month. Once they leave I’ll be ready to party, both one with friends I know and a separate block party to get to know new neighbors. Definitely need to do that this summer since I just moved!

I just hosted an open house to showcase the Mexican desserts my friend makes and I invited all my friends and neighbors. It was so much fun and everyone loved it. You can see pictures here:

It wasn’t a potluck – I was in a position to offer it as a gift to my friends. I usually host a potluck/games night once a month, but hosting the open house with neighbors reminded me of how much I enjoy my neighbors and I definitely want to create more opportunities for us to gather in the future. Great idea!

Hey! I just saw this post (yah a few days late). We’re organizing a bbq for the last weekend this month, during our County Fair with a few family friends and our neighbors. We moved to a small town, and have a couple neighbors we see on a regular basis, but have never had any over except for the neighbor girl that babysits. So I’m excited!

We have an annual block party in early June, before the full heat of the summer. We close the street off to traffic, and put a BBQ in the middle of the median (it’s like a long, narrow park in the middle of the street). Everyone brings whatever they want to BBQ, and something to share. It’s a pleasant way to spend an afternoon and meet all the neighbors.

I met one of our best babysitters at the block party the first year I moved in.
